The DA* 300mm F4 plus 1.4X teleconverter will give you great reach and IQ at the cost of slower autofocus than you want.

It is a good tradeoff IMHO. You will have some frustrating misses from slow AF but when you nail shots, you will really nail them.

I would like an updated DA*300

My DA* 300mm is my favourite lens by a long chalk (even though I own some stellar lenses). Wonderful rendition. Perfectly good for handheld BIF on the K1 but for one fault - the AF just isn't fast enough.

If Pentax does a new DFA 300mm F3.5 or F4 with 9 out of 10 AF I am totally going to buy one. It would be heaven.

It is a FF combination made in heaven. The DFA 200mm F2.8 is also great with the K1.

I'm hanging to get the DFA* 85mm because I am looking forward to awesome AF. Lovely as Zeiss lenses are, their AF is a bit ordinary.

B&W Picture Style

Both of my photography teachers encourage having the rear screen on B&W. As much as I respect them, I always have the screen on portrait.

I only ever shoot RAW so it is only about immediate feedback.

I shoot with a K1 and some fairly nice glass. Barely a month goes past when somebody doesn't say: ' Sooooo you are obviously keen on photography... When are you going to get a Canon or Nikon?' I always thank them for their advice. They are caring people and don't want me to be held back by inferior equipment.

It is magical on full frame. Really beautiful IQ. You don't lose much when you use it with the 1.4X teleconverter either, although obviously that means going to crop frame.

People are very helpful and lots of them ask when I am going to get a proper camera - you know, Canon or Nikon.

I explain that I ALWAYS have to be different and shooting Pentax is different.

The latest version of LR is much more versatile that version 3.

Still, you probably wouldn't regret getting into PS. Plenty of reward for effort.

77mm vs Sigma 85mm

I tried both the FA 77 and the Sigma 85 at the shop. It was a no brainer to buy the FA 77. Way smaller and the images just looked more pleasing from the 77.

FA 77mm F1.8 and DA* 300mm F4.

When I get the DFA 85mm F whatever*, I expect that to make up a three way tie.

*85mm F anything under F2 will make me happy. Doesn't have to be F1.4 at that focal length.

Learn to pose models?

I learn from a fashion photographer who teaches us to ask the models to just keep moving however they feel and not to ever stop for too long.

Your job is then to click at the great moments and move on when you have just missed one. There will always be another.

If you check out his website peter-coulson.com.au, you can see he gets the odd nice shot.

Working with models who like their work and are willing to put in some effort to teach you is also very helpful.

Left handers are ignored

Everything in the world maps on to cricket, including Frisbee throwing. Left handed batters face the bowler with their right foot forward and it steps towards the ball first. If you are a lefty, hold the Frisbee in your right hand and step forward with you right foot. Counter-intuitively perhaps, it is the easiest way for lefties.

Fast 85mm lens?

Nobody in their right mind sells a 77. Apart from not focussing quickly enough to be a great dance lens, it is perfect.

That said, I;m hanging out for the DFA 85mm.

My 2c worth:

Start with the KP (or a used K5iis) and 55-300 PLM. Very versatile and lightweight combo.

Add a 100 macro. Then, if you can afford it, add a DA* 300 because it is Pentax's best lens and brilliant for every kind of nature photography.

Maybe add a lightweight monopod to your kit too.
