Pentax K-01 vs Fuji X-Pro 1 vs Olympus OM-D

I agree regarding the Olympus. I've been looking for a more-portable alternative to my K-7. I own several Pentax lenses and love the 77mm, but the K-01's lack of a viewfinder steered me to pre-order the new Olympus OM-D. I sincerely hope Pentax sells gazillions of their new camera, but the K-01 w/o a viewfinder seems to me to be a heavy point-and-shoot with potentially wonderful image quality.

Cool, distinctive design. If the AF works well with existing lenses, and perhaps they release a shoe-mounted EVF, I could see myself behind the wheel of one of these...

Let me rephrase--that shot was taken by a Q body attached to some sort of monster lens. That kind of defeats a major selling point for the Q system, doesn't it? Does it have to be mated with such a lens in order for it to take a good enough picture to support your assertions? Geez, you answer a question honestly about why you didn't buy a Q, and several forum members act like you've insulted a family member. If YOU love the Q system, that should be enough. I don't have to like it in order to validate your passion for it, I hope.

Actually, a point & shoot didn't really take that picture. Show me the Q kit that includes that howitzer of a lens. Cute trick, I'll give you. Another thing my point & shoot cannot do is attach itself to a 100 hp motor and become a speedboat. Some of you folks want to live in a world where the Q is more than a quirky, laudable attempt at something new, enjoy the weather in that fantasy land. The OP asked why one would not be drawn to the Q, and I answered honestly--too expensive given the suspected image quality. However, if the price came down to around $400, I could see this interesting little camera finding its way into many more people's bags.

I would not put the Q in the category of a "luxury item." Leica, yes. I don't think the Q's published specs would allow it to qualify as the "Rolls-Royce" of digital cameras. Again, I hope they sell well.

Whole concept just doesn't make any sense to me. You can get comparable image quality for a third of the price (based on several reviews, Q image quality is good, not earth-shattering); simply looks like an expensive toy. Basically, it look too expensive for what it provides. Of course, I like the size of the CompactFlash card better than SD. I hope they sell gazillions of them, though.

Axl,
I own a K-7, along with 43, 55, and 77mm lenses. I've been with Pentax since 2008, but I've never fully converted (still using Nikon D80). Although I hate the thought of parting with those three lenses, I am constantly frustrated by the K-7's inferior autofocus. Love the camera, love the flexibility in-body SR allows, but Nikon makes a superior body. I wish Pentax would make the camera that would allow me to retire the D80.

I usually just read these posts, but I agree wholeheartedly with you about Pentax. Love the lenses--just wish the cameras (mainly autofocus speed & accuracy) were consistently equivalent to the big boys. I still choose my K-7 (a good camera) mainly, but still won't let go of my D80.

My K-7/55mm 1.4 combo doesn't appear to need any adjustment in outdoor lighting, only under fluorescent lighting. I suppose I'll just have to decide where I'll be using this lens most, and go with that adjustment. I'm afraid I'm getting very close to "Rain Man" territory here--maybe the answer is simply picking up the camera and taking pictures without worrying about these focusing issues.

Do you calibrate every lens/body combo? I came to Pentax from a Nikon D80, and I never bothered with this micro-adjustment issue. To be honest, I don't even know if the D80 had this function available.

K-7 focus adjustment with 55mm 1.4

I recently purchased a 55mm 1.4 Pentax lens that I hope to use with my K-7. I did some quick and dirty tests for front/back focus under fluorescent lighting; I repeatedly observed the camera was back-focusing. I dialed in a +8, and this seemed to sharpen things up nicely. My question is this: can I expect similar results in natural lighting conditions? I tested it indoors first, rather than outside, for the simple reason that's probably the only place where I would shoot with it wide open. Any comments appreciated.

Pentax Q in the Flesh

I wonder who the target audience is for this camera? I can see it competing with the S95/G12 as a travel camera, but it would have to sell for roughly $600 or less (IMO) to be a viable option. If one is in the mood to tote lenses, why would they not simply grab their SLR? With that tiny sensor, I would imagine it would have to been targeted at folks who normally use a higher-end compact. Comments?

Maybe it's the platypus of cameras, and will get PopPhoto to call it a "MILC" (not to be confused with MILF). Micro Interchangeable Lens Compact, btw. Sorta redundant, I guess...

I suppose my doubts about this camera center around my possibly impossible wish of a small-body camera that could somehow support my 43mm and 77mm lenses. Good luck Pentax--hope you've come up with a camera that finds it place on the shelves.

I disagree that this camera belongs to a pns category--much of the discussion here has been the natural attempt to determine just who Pentax had in mind as their target consumers. I doubt seriously any discussion here will dissuade or convince anyone as to whether or not to purchase. It is a discussion forum--respectfully, I find the complaints about the debate itself much more troubling than the overall negative tone of the discussions.

Echoing junyo's feelings, IT'S OK FOR PEOPLE TO DISCUSS ISSUES-- it doesn't necessarily mean they want the camera to fail. I sincerely hope the camera flys off of the shelf. However, when you see so many people at rock concerts using a tiny P&S with the flash on trying to take pictures of the stage from 200 feet away, you might wonder if a tiny sensor interchangeable lens compact will have a huge market. I've used Nikon, Canon, and Pentax. I love Pentax lenses, but all of these companies have good products. I think someone of the negative comments stem only from hoping that Pentax might make something to give the big boys pause--most of us love and root for an underdog. At first glance, given the history of small sensors and the suggested MSRP, it is reasonable for people to question whether or not this camera will be a winner. Pentax could indeed have it right--a Fuji X100 with interchangeable lenses would look seriously like a full-sized camera. Personally, I was hoping for a smaller vacation camera than the K-7--good image quality in a relatively small body. Here's hoping the Q is it!

It seems many/most Pentaxians are drawn to the brand because of its uniqueness and overall commitment to image quality. Yeah, bubblegum-colored cameras might speak volumes otherwise, but the forum's love affair with the 31, 43, and 77mm lenses point to a camera company centered around image quality. No one as yet has produced a sensor that small that comes close to APC quality; maybe Pentax will be the first. If it has the typical high ISO issues associated with compacts, I doubt it could be very popular at that price. If the X100 ever becomes readily available, I really see it as the natural alternative to the new "Q." Can't say Pentax isn't willing to try something different...

Now that's what I'm getting at. Perhaps, if you're clumsy like the fella in one of the responding comments, tri-pod stabilization would protect his nose. I am simply saying I miss the sponteneity that came with only having a basic understanding of the myriad functions that my K-7 sports. I've shot several weddings; this type of shooting requires serious attention to most everything--especially when the available lighting is marginal. However, I'm afraid this mindset has bled over into what formerly was my favorite way to use the camera--just shooting candids of friends and family. Anyhow, thanks for the post.

I thought I would throw out this random thought that crossed my mind. Any of you guys miss the days when you just threw the camera up to your face and snapped a picture? I find myself often obsessing about setting the right aperture, making sure the camera is perfectly level, selecting spot/center-weighted metering, etc. Seems like some of best photographs I've taken have been simple snapshots--I left the camera in Program or Full Auto and just took pictures. Maybe that might bring some of the fun back for me.
