I picked up a refurb K20 to replace my broken one for $170 and an AF540 for $181. I was told by one of the staff at Denver Pro Photo that they were actually contacted by Pentax with an offer for them to be Pentax's only official retailer in Denver. It seems a perfect match, as DPP is the last real photo lab and shop around town. It's always been odd to me that with thir headquarters in Denver, there was no where to go and buy a Pentax DSLR.

I came really close to getting a K5 for $513, but value my marriage too much.

Taking Photos of a Christmas Tree/Lights

I can't seem to find an example, but last year I took some portraits of the family in front of the tree. I used a thyristor auto flash bounced off the ceiling, and used a slow shutter speed to expose for the ambient tree lights without the flash (dragging the shutter.) I was left with the tree properly exposed, with the tree lights just bright enough to show that they were on. The subjects were exposed as well as I could ask from the bounce flash.

I've gotta find that shot at home, and I'll post it later.

Experiences with PaintShop Pro X2 and Pentax raw?

As I recall, the one step noise removal did a fair job, but the digital camera noise removal gives you a lot more options to customize the amount and type of removal. One step works fine for most situations, but with high ISO images where careful noise reduction is necessary, take the time to work with the digital camera noise removal.

That said, the noise tools in X2 aren't that great. Noise Ninja does a much better job, and you can download a free trial. It's costs about half of what you've already paid for X2, but it's certainly worth trying. Noise Ninja: Downloads

Experiences with PaintShop Pro X2 and Pentax raw?

I used to use PSPX2 regularly, until I got the K20D. You need to get the "Ultimate" edition to be able to read K20D raw files, either in PEF or DNG. I found that after paying like fifty bucks to upgrade, the dynamic range of the RAW converter was terrible. I live in Colorado, and I immediately noticed that there was a whole lot more snow on the snow-capped peaks with conversions from PSPX2 than PPL, RawTherapee, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc. It was really obvious!

Although PSPX2 is a very capable software suite, I'd recommend staying away unless you have to use it for RAW conversions.

No worries, Greg! I'm not easily offended. If I didn't want honest opinions, I wouldn't have asked for them. I'm using jalbum to create the photo albums, and there's some very easy tools to reconfigure the album with only a few clicks. I think I'll lower the resolution and quality of the page images to make the site a more zippy.

I am using CSS sheets and may have to revisit how my albums are laid out in the long run. Anyone have any suggestions as to an easily incorporateable photo album software that diesn't use flash?

Was that regarding my specific flash on the home page, or flash in general?

Thanks for looking!

I redesigned my website last weekend, and would like some input. Right now, the function is primarily for sharing with friends and family, but eventually it could be altered slightly for business.

any good free photo web building and hosting sites?

Here's a quick update on 000webhost.com. I'm now thinking I need to go with a paid service. I have a couple of video slideshows that I'm trying to host, but it seems as though the throughput from the servers isn't sufficient. Everyone that tries to view the videos has issues with the video freezing up. I've re-encoded the videos enough times that I've tried nearly every size/quality option. The videos work great locally, but not from the web.

Anyone w/ K-x in Denver area?

I hope I'm not too late to help. The only place I've found in Denver to actually pick up and hold a KX is Ultimate Electronics. The one at 84th and I-25 has a couple in stock and a very small selection of lenses. They have also had a K20, but the last time I saw it, it was on clearance.

Straps of all kinds but which one for carrying two cameras?

I was wrestling with a similar issue a couple of weeks ago. I ended up using the factory strap on the K100D shortened as much as it would go. I then purchased a Quantaray neoprene strap ($12) from Wolf Camera for my K20. Even though the new strap wasn't at full extension, there was plenty of room to manipulate both cameras around my neck simultaniously. When I had a very long lens with hood on the K100, I would have to tilt the camera down to bring the K20 up to my eye, but it was a small price to pay to have two bodies at the ready at any given time. The only problem that I ran into was that the stuff on my belt would occasionally turn off the SR on my K20 for me. I suppose that it's only an issue if you're wearing a "Batman" belt, though. :)

Poll: Is IQ difference between Sigma 17-70 and DA Ltds noticeable?

Just a quick word about the Sigma. I've found that at 70mm, I didn't need any focus adjustment. After getting some OOF super wide shots, I did some focus testing at 17mm and found that I needed a +6 adjustment. It was a night-and-day difference when shooting wide at f/2.8, and my 70mm shots are still spot on.

After the fact on Thursday, I checked with several people and they said that they didn't notice me focusing or the shutter slap. I was very self-conscious about that, but did use an M50 f/1.4 for a lot of the time.

Memorial service etiquette

I've been asked to photograph memorial services for two folks now. I've kind of pigeon-holed myself, because after the first one, I created a video using the still images that was very touching and with the last one (that was on Thursday) everyone is greatly anticipating the video.

I would agree for the most part with Frogroast with the exception of the long lens thing. If you've cleared your photography with the family, then there's no reason not to act like the photographer. With the first one, I had a nice vantage point in a balcony looking over the congregation, but with this one, I had to walk around the back perimeter of the church. The direction I was given from the church staff was not to cross the pew backs of the last row. I try to be very judicious about what I shoot, so there's not a lot of tears which might be embarrassing later.

The video is here if you're wondering.

Christmas tree shots

I took these shots with an AF280T mounted to the hotshoe and directed straight up. I dragged the shutter pretty significantly to get the background properly exposed. I've never gotten better Christmas tree shots before and feel like I'm getting more comfortable with playing with flash exposure.
