Dear B&H,

Can you still ship cameras with lithium ion batteries to Japan?

The reason I ask is because although I've shipped to and had cameras shipped from international locations on numerous occasions before. This week i tried to ship a small point and shoot to my mother in Australia but it seems EMS is really cracking down on the lithium ion air shipping. They simply refused to ship it. I asked if I were to say there was no battery in it would they ship it and was told that the lithium battery can be see by th X-Ray and it wouldn't pass customs.

Although this is not Pentax related (as I can get all the Pentax gear I need here in Japan) I do want to purchase a Samsung (I assume you carry the range?) because their cameras are unavailable in Japan.

Regards,
Paul Singleton.

If any members of the forum in Japan know of someone like Erik, in the States please let me know.
These lenses look cosmetically like new, they function mechanically like new. Unfortunately the optics are not in the same condition.

I have an LX and an ES desperately wanting of this glass.

Like I said before, these lenses look and feel better thn most of my M/A/FA. Lenses.
As i guess you can alredy tell by the tone od my post, I want these lenses.

It is just matter of economics. If I were in the States I would send them to Erik for an overhaul without hesitation. Though stange as it sounds, even though I am living in the home of the the Takumar I can't find anyone who is willing to even give me a quote, let alone start to work on cleaning this beautiful glass.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I recently tried to clean a Penatx SMC A 50mm 1.7 lens and it was a disaster.
I am too impatient and mechanically inept to attemt another repair job on any lens.
Far too many small screws and tiny springs.

I have heard great things about Erik in the U.S and would love to have him service the lenses.
But are they really worth me spending the repair cost plus the return shipping from Japan to the U.S? And I also have a lovely looking black enamel ES that has a minor problem that I would like Erik to take a look at. (Pentax Japan won't eveen look at it) but such heavy old equiptment costs more for return shiping than the actuall repairs.

I will definitely try to contact Mike Cash about in country repairs. Although, like has already been stated i haven't seen him around here foe a while now.

These lenses look and feel so nice externally, but I have no practical experience with them.
Are they worth the trouble? If the glass was clean they could pass for new old stock.

Paul

So...I work as an English teacher in Japan and every Wednesday I teach a seniors English circle. After 2 years the members know of my love for Pentax and my passion for photography in general.

So tonight, an older lady "gave" me two beautiful looking Takumar lenses. She said she bought them for a class at university almost 40 years ago. She threw away the body years ago.

These lenses are in absolutely pristine on the outside, focus and aperture rings are smooth as silk. Not a mark or a scratch to be found on the lens bodies.
In the original leather cases with original screw on hoods. From first glance I swear they look like they have never been used (which is probably the truth)

The problem is they are both infected with fungus.
The 135 f3.5 is the worst affected, while it looks pristine from the outside the fungus has well and truly taken hold between the glass elements.

The 35mm 3.5 is not so bad and is still usable, although the beginnings of fungal growth are evident.

Unlike the In the states where men make it their hobby and a lucrative side business to repair old Pentax gear, here in Japan I know of no-one who does the same thing.

Pentax Japan, is these days very reluctant to repair any of the older pieces and if they do it is not cheap.

But these lenses are so perfect cosmetically, they actually look like new stock.
Do you think it is worth paying Pentax at least $200 to overhaul the lenses?

Regards,

Paul.

Most reliable fast SDHC card 8GB+?

I use Sandisk cards exclusively on my K-7, although I do also have 2 By 2GB Panasonics that I use in my wifes point and shoot only. None have ever failed yet ( Touch wood )

I recently got a class 10 Sandisk Extreme 8BG with my K-7. When I got home and compared it to my older class 6 sandisk card I found they both have a write speed of 30mb/s.

So what's the difference between the class 6 and the class 10 cards?

A free bump...for a stunning piece of Pentax history.

Someone should jump on this.
The standard black ones regularly sell for more than this on ebay.
If only I had some money!!!

If you can do a payment schedule for me......... ;-}

While I can't comment on the product, having no experience in either flash nor macro photography.
I can most definitely vouch for the seller. having purchased several items from him personally I can say without hesitation he is an excellent and very fair ebay seller.

I hope you made an offer, as he almost always accepts reasonable offers and includes free, fast international shipping.

Right angle view findersfor K-7

So here I am again, as usual asking for, and not offering more advice.:(

unfortunately i just don't know enough to feel qualified to offer advice, thus I use this forum knowing that there are many well informed, experienced folk here who know much more than I.

So....This week I headed to my local camera dealer (Yodabashi camera in Yokohama) to purchase a right angle viewfinder for my new K-7. Fully aware of the premium price Pentax charge for their OEM accessories and prepared to pay. That was until some pimply faced part time schoolboy shop assistant told me that Pentax didn't make such a thing. while I know full well that they do, and even pointed it out in the K-7 Manual.

Unfortunately some very lazy, smart arse shop assistants here in Japan figure that just because I am not Japanese, I can't speak or understand the language and use it as an excuse to just be lazy and or show their bigoted ignorant attitudes.

(My bad luck that night, as I usually get excellent service from several staff members who know me by sight)

After a heated discussion I basically told him to stick his finder you know where.

My question is; while I know the OEM version is available, it is also relatively expensive. Relative that is, to the amount of time I would actually use it.

Does anyone have any experience with the third party options available from China on eBay? If so what are the trade offs you make for the much cheaper price.

Regards,
Paul.

Does anyone have any experience with this tripod and ball head combo?

Best Traveler Tripod (Neo-1128T)+Smart Ball-head(LX-1T) - eBay (item 320371019748 end time Oct-10-09 05:13:26 PDT)

I need a compact, lightweight yet sturdy and stable tripod for my overseas trips, and this seems to fit the bill perfectly.

I have dealt with the dealer before and he is a great ebay seller.
Just looking for second opinions on this particular tripod, before I commit to buying.

At the moment the heaviest load would be a K-7 and a DA* 200mm lens.
looks like a great deal to me, compactness and portability is impotant to me.

Any opinions would be helpful and appreciated.

Additional Details
This is the Special Edition Titan K20d, of which only 1000 were produced for the Japanese domestic market only. It is in Mint condition with less than 500 shutter actuation's.

It includes the matching battery grip and spare battery. (Both of which have not been use at all.)

All original packaging is included. The Pentax strap, software and cables remain unopened in their original packaging.

Also included is a genuine Camera Armor Impact protector with lens armor and LCD protector. + Brand new Genuine Pentax Remote F. (English Instruction manual is included) and it is the same as any other K20d in the menu choices for languages.

The Lens has seen even less use than the camera as I bought it as an upgrade from the standard kit zoom. I generally shoot with primes. I just wanted a faster all purpose walk around zoom lens.
It is a very useful 28-70 mm (42-105mm in 35mm terms). Also comes complete with hood and all packaging.

Unfortunately the warranty is a 1 year (about 10.5 months left) Japan only warranty. So if anything goes wrong it will need to be shipped back to Japan for warranty work.

If by some chance it needs work in the first 60 days and you need to ship it back to me I will cover the shipping back to you. After that the responsibility for warranty work and shipping will be up to the new owner.

Unfortunately I can't provide photos of the item as it is the only camera I currently own and I need to sell it before the wife will let me get another. I will try to borrow a friends camera and take some pics but rest assured in looks like new, works like new because... well it is new.

Please send me a private message if interested in the item!

No it isn't a rumor anymore but the forum is NEWS and Rumors, and it is definitely still news. And until we see any real test and images many of the cameras feature set and Image output are still subject to rumor and conjecture.

Pentax or Sigma?

I have the opportunity to buy a used Sigma DG 50mm f1:2.8 Macro of a friend of mine for a very good price. the lens is in Like new condition.

I currently don't have a macro lens, and i guess my first choice would be something a little longer, (as I already have several lenses at 50mm) but i don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth.

My question is how does it compare with the Pentax D FA 50mm Macro. I know the are about 2 and a half times the price I can get this Sigma for.

In the lens review section the Sigma gets an 8 and the Pentax gets a 9.
Will I be sorry later and wished I'd waited for the extra cash to get the Pentax?

My main use would be for portraiture and general walk about stuff.

Thanks for any input.

There are many words in common use in Japan today without any contemporary connection to the Chinese Syllabus. Of course Hiragna is the Japanese extension of Chinese characters used ostensibly to enhance their own unique vocabulary.

The Japanese language has evolved as does every colloquial language does, and rest assured there are times when Chinese Kanji just does not suffice.

But I fear we have strayed way off topic here.

Hiragani is a Japanese Syllabus and they most certainly do hold a meaning of their own which can't be compared to kanji (Chinese characters).

While Hiragana is often used to add Japanese particles to Chinese characters, it is also often used on it's own for words that are of Japanese origin and quite often have no relation to Chinese Kanji. It's all very confusing and complex. And while online resources can often be helpful they can rarely be relied upon when translating the subtle nuances of the language.

Who are you gonna believe?
Google translate..... or a man who lives in Japan, was in the shop , saw the signs and ordered the camera?

I've been holding off on the purchase of the K20 for a long time now, but this gave me the push I needed.

I pre-ordered my Titan K20 and Battery grip tonight at Yodabashi camera in Yokohama.
I don't really care what the nay-sayers think about this camera, I think it is freakin' awesome.

The set cost 99800 Japanese yen, minus 10% for for being a yodabashi point card holder.
So at todays conversion rates that's about 850 US$.

Well worth it in my opinion considering it's only about $100 more than the standard camera and battery grip. And with only 1000 of these beauties available, I think mine is destined for the display cabinet with my Silver FA 31 Ltd mounted front and centre of my Pentax cabinet!

They said delivery should be expected within the next 3 weeks. Looking forward to that phone call :D

DA 40mm on full frame?

I am looking for a nice compact film set up to carry in my work bag everyday.

I have some nice compact Pentax film cameras such as the Super A and MZ-5n/ZX-5n.
I know I can get the M series 40mm pancake lens but after reading the reviews and seeing the (over inflated)? prices on eBay. I think it may be wise to stay away from this lens.

I was wondering if anyone has tried the DA-40 on a 35mm film camera.
Does the image circle cover the full frame?
If so is there a lot of light drop of on the corners of the frame?

I realise the limitations of the DA-40 having no aperture ring, but I would be using it wide open most of the time anyway and correct me if I'm wrong but it should function and meter correctly in program mode on the ZX-5n at any aperture shouldn't it?

Regards,
nikuyakun.
