Late to the game here, but I've been struck with the sickness. Happened today for the first time. No previous problems with the mirror since I've had the camera.

Date of event: July, 28, 2015
K3 camera purchased: November 2013
Shutter count: [don't have camera with me as I type this]
Ser No: [don't have camera with me as I type this]
Quality: RAW
Memory: one memory card (32GB)
Lens: Pentax 55-300
Mode: AV
Focus: Back Button
AF button: Disabled
SR: on

Outside temperature was hot (30C) and muggy (probably 85% humidity). I had been doing quite a bit of shooting for a period of an hour or so.

Yes, sorry, I had mentioned in the post above the photos that the first set shows the blurring. The second set do not however. The first photo in the second set was also taken with the 17-70. So why does this one not have the blurring? There seems to be some inconsistency, which makes me wonder if the problem is human error (ie—something I'm doing wrong). The second photo in the second set was taken with an 8-16mm and is tack sharp.

The bottom line is that I'm really finding it difficult to get to the bottom of this. It seems like the lens is the problem—not the camera—but then why are some photos taken with that lens sharp?

These photos do not show blurring. First photo was taken with the 17-70, but there is no apparent blurring.
Second photo, just for comparison, was taken with an 8-16 and is tack-sharp.

I thought I'd post a few more photos for anyone who wants to see. The first two are taken with the 17-70 and show definitive blurring on the right edge. But the third photo (Union Storage) does not show the blurring. Why? Meanwhile, the fourth photo was taken with my Sigma 8-16, and it's tack sharp. This implies it's the lens—not the camera.

To make matters more complicated, I took dtmateojr's suggestion and did comparison test shots at f5.6, f8 and f11. The differences were negligible. In fact, I could not re-create the blurring in these test shots. This implies that the problem is user-generated. But I just don't see how that could be the case. The examples above are taken in good light at fast shutter speeds. I've been doing this for many years, and I don't see how I could all of a sudden have forgotten how to take clear photos.

Perhaps, as jamesm007 suggested, some diagnostics on the camera are in order.

Yeah, the right side is way worse than the left. I'm pretty sure this is a new phenomenon. I hadn't had problems in the 6 or 7 years previous.

dtmateojr: I will do that test you suggested.
Oldbayrunner: If the lens has become decentered, is this something that can be fixed?

I always take two bracketed shots. One at regular EV and one under-exposed. Been doing this for years, so I don't believe it to be the source of the problem.

Hi folks,

I've been shooting with a Sigma 17-70 as my primary walk-around lens for several years now. I've used it with a K10, K-7, K-5, and now, my K-3. It's only since I've started noticing significant image degradation on the edges of some images. I'm not a pixel peeper at all, but I've been seeing an unacceptable amount of blurring.

So what is happening here? Are the optics of the lens simply not good enough to keep up with the K-3? Is is possible it has sustained damage?

Attached is an example. It was shot at f7.1, 1/1000, 34mm.

Thanks for looking.

Yes, I've ruled out the original 360. The 360 II does swivel, so that's why it's either that or the original 540....

Hi folks. Long time Pentax shooter here, about to purchase my first dedicated flash to use in combination with my K-3. I'm a little unsure which to buy, though. I've narrowed down the selection to two models listed in the thread title.

I plan on using it for light portrait work...nothing professional, just friends and family. Bouncing is crucial (and that's why I automatically ruled out the original 360). I also shoot quite frequently in the snow (see below), so the weather sealing of the 360 II is an obvious benefit.

November Snow | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Isabel and McDermot | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I can get them locally at fairly comparable prices. Just not sure if I need the extra juice that the 540 has. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Bryan

Autofocus Probem/Depleted Battery Error (K5)

An update, for anyone interested. After some back and forth with Pentax, Pentax has reduced it's quote for the repair from $900+ to $400. Even if the current problem was not due to the drop that occurred two years ago, the warranty is still nullified by the drop. Fine, I can accept that. I'm appreciative of the compromise Pentax made in their quote.

For now, the only sore point I have is the amount of time that this whole process is taking. I initially dropped off my camera at the shop on February 21 and it was shipped to Pentax within a day or two. It's now April 23, and I am still without the camera. Nor do I have an ETA for when it will be back in my hands. (Side note: My second camera, a Sony RX100 is filling in quite nicely for the K5. I wish Pentax would put out a compact as strong as the RX100.)

If the onus is on me to prove that the current problem is not due to a drop that happened almost two years ago, then I am screwed. It would be impossible for me to prove this. All I can offer is my word that the camera was flawless for the two years after the drop.

Anyways, a dialogue has been initiated with Pentax. I'm told by the folks on this forum that Pentax is reasonable and helpful so we'll see how things go. There's still a good chance, though, that they will lose a loyal customer if things to no go favorably for me.

The camera did focus and take photos in manual mode. Nothing rattling in the camera. In fact, when I took the camera into the shop it was working fine and we were unable to replicate the problem. So yeah, problem is intermittent.

I had a bit of an oops with the camera a few days after I bought it—in July 2011. Since then, there has been no impact whatsoever, and until this recent problem, I had no problems with it at all. For Pentax to suspect that impact has caused this problem is an outrage. I take very good care of my gear.

I'm seriously considering leaving Pentax. If I'm going to have to spend $900 for a repair (or more likely a new body), I don't think I can justify staying with Pentax. They're playing dirty here, and I've been a happy Pentax user for 15 years.

WOW.

Okay, so Pentax is denying that the damage falls under warranty. They're claiming it was due to camera impact. This is patently false! I have not any any incidents for almost 2 years.

Insult to injury? Their estimate is $900! I can get a new one for less! I am completely disgusted right now.

Hi folks. K5 user here, experiencing my first major problem with the K5, after about a year and a half of problem-free use.

All of a sudden, when pressing the AF button (I never use the half-shutter press to focus) autofocus went crazy. Focus failed, the shutter did not fire, and the screen quickly went black. The dreaded Battery Depleted message appeared. These were fresh batteries, but I put in different ones anyways. Same thing. I experimented with a different memory card and a different lens. Again, same thing. Camera seemed to work fine in manual-focus mode.

The camera is still under warranty so I took it back to the shop to have it shipped off to Pentax (problem could not be duplicated when I was in the shop—of course). This was over a month ago. Called today for an update, and after the dealer checked in with Pentax, I was told that Pentax was preparing an estimate. This is perplexing because (a) preparing an estimate implies that this problem is not covered under the warranty and (b) it's already been a month!—what is taking them so long? I'm in Canada, but still.

I'm pretty frustrated right now. The only backup I have is a compact camera (Sony RX100—great camera, but it's no K5). Feeling pretty naked without my K5.

Has anyone had this problem? And if so, were the repairs covered by your warranty?

Here are two more examples where roughly 1/3 of the shot is in shadow. Could it really be that my hand got in the way??

What is Happening With the Flash (During Snowfall Photos)?

Hi folks,

I can't quite figure out what is happening with some flash shots (using the K5 pop-up flash). I've been taking photos during snowfalls and on occasion, roughly 1/3 of the frame will fall in shadow. In other words, 2/3 of the snowflakes will illuminate as expected, but 1/3 of them do not.

Is this simply the shadow of the lens? The attached was shot with a Sigma 17-70 at its widest. Typically I'll get a slight shadow on all flash shots with this lens, but not like this. It only seems to happen with snow. Results are inconsistent, though. These ones came out great:

Flickr: Search bryanscott's photostream

But you can clearly see the shadow in the attached. I believe I mistakenly had the flash set to Trailing Curtain Sync for this shot. Could that be the culprit?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Take a look at this and it becomes quite evident.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/members/slowdive101-albums-k-7-blur-pictu...836-detail.jpg

I never considered myself to be a person that nitpicks down to the last pixel (I do a lot of hand-held HDR, which lends itself to some softness), but I've just never felt quite right about the K-7 in medium- to low-light. This image is a classic example.
