Stop gap until the DA* 200 is released?

I'm looking forward to the DA* 200 release later this year, but will need a long(er) lense than the 16-45 I have currently for some touring I am doing in August. I'm trying to decide if a cheapy 200mm AF would be a good idea, hopefully something under $200. Any thoughts on what might fit the bill?

K10D btw.

I thought I'd mention this because I dont see it noted anywhere:

If you adjust the ISO using the OK button + Wheel, you can go back to AUTO ISO by hitting OK + Green buttons. "Auto" will show up in the ISO indicator through the viewfinder.

This is nice, because it's just like resetting aperture and shutter speeds using the Green button, and you can reach OK + Green + Wheel simultaneously with thumb + 2 fingers.

Anand did not do this review. I don't think he does any reviews anymore, just rolls around in site-ad dollars.

Hot pixels, pixel mapping, and the Pentax Warranty?

No I mean.. how do you FIND the pixels in the resulting image!

Surely there's a sneaky way in CS2 to find pixels that aren't a particular colour? I panned over the image and only found a dead pixel on my LCD monitor.. :(

High ISO performance and the construction (weather seals, latch accuracy, solid carved-from-stone feel).

Soft JPEG edges? I'm not seeing it.

Those are 100% crops, and I don't see where an edge sharpness problem in any of the JPEG outputs, relative to the RAW.

Question: What test can you do to determine this.

Doesn't seem like an easy thing to spot if you had say, less than 10 bad pixels total.

If you had several thousand well sure.. maybe that would be more noticeable.

Two RAW DNG+JPEG shots, F22 for maximum DOF, first with default out-of-the-box camera settings, the second with +2 sharpening, plus the corresponding DNG RAW processed in CS2 exactly as described on DPReview:

JPEGs are straight out of the camera, only cropped, no other manipulation.

Sorry about the crops not being in the exact same spot for each image, I don't know how to do that with CS2 yet.

100% Crops:

RAW DNG, No Auto initial sharpness 0, Unsharp mask 80% rest defaulted:

Default settings, JPEG:

Sharpness +2, JPEG:

Resized uncropped images (links only):

I dunno about you guys but to me edge sharpness of the default JPEG looks identical if not even more detailed and sharper than the RAW+CS2 effort, and the +2 sharp JPEG looks much sharper.

If anyone can see something I can't, feel free to ridicule my eye sight.

The way I see it is you either;

a) shoot photos to immediately print out of the camera at typical sizes for an album, or maybe resize and email to your friends or stash on long term storage media, in which case you will never see this soft edge JPEG characteristic, or;

b) shoot photos to print at massively huge sizes for framing and/or publication, in which case you will shoot RAW and spend 90% of your time tweaking images in post-proc, in which case you will never see this soft edge JPEG characteristic.

As a side note; media is cheap enough such that even a hobbyist photographer can get a couple of 2gig cards @ ~100 shots each for a hundred bucks and shoot DNG RAW + JPEG all-the-time. That way, the stuff you want to email off can be harvested straight from the JPEG, and you always have the RAW stashed away for when you feel the need to put a 3'x2' photo on the wall next to your concert grand piano.

Try Max Muir @ Musselburgh Pharmacy, Dunedin.

They have a long standing relationship with Ian R. Little and have priority on the south island's K10D's.
