Weekly Challenge CHALLENGE # 486. Paying Homage to your Ghosts

I will skip the usual banalities and weasel words and get to it. All of the photos are winners. I am 73 and can identify with almost all, if not all, of what is presented. I sincerely appreciate it.

Vaskebjorn, We too have special places, second homes, and can understand how having that removed can be troubling. I think the monochrome and lack of people supports the story very well.

SpecialK and big oak. I put these together as they are a "gut-punch" and wonderfully dramatic while being opposites in terms of silence and noise (in the common sense). Without words they easily relate a story.

aaacb. I grew up near Chicago and can easily fit myself into the scene. I could tell you stories. . . .

atupdate. Having spent six weeks in that position I don't need to be reminded but you are spot on in doing so. I understand.

RGlasel. I did not have to look close to scream "Don't drag your paddle." But of course that was not the photo. I did look close and (I saw) the child just on the edge of a smile that would light up everything. It is one of those timing things that are usually just luck.

To choose one photo as "best represents the theme" is, of course, impossible as each is its own story. I am going with Vaskebjorn as I am drawn to the photo/theme being understated requiring time to appreciate. I was apprehensive to go with theme that was somewhat out of the ordinary. I appreciate the effort of everyone. Please post personal thoughts on the photos.

Vaskebjorn, give us a challenge.

Yes it is FA. Normally I would claim TYPO but in this case I was just lazy. Thanks for the response.

Magic Tamron becomes Pentax

I bought a used Tamron 28-105 to substitute for the Pentax 18-55 as a "walking-around" lens. Checking the EXIF (using Affinity Photo) the shots from the Tamron appear as a Pentax F 28-105. I am less than sophisticated with the data aspects or most aspects of the modern world. I certainly would not misrepresent a shot even if it was of little consequence. However, I am curious about this and would correct it if possible. At this point I would be blundering around. Can someone enlighten me?

Weekly Challenge CHALLENGE # 486. Paying Homage to your Ghosts

Every individual retains life experiences the strongest of these are your "ghosts". Good or bad you recognize these and I will assume they are part of you photography. Present your ghosts with as little or as much written description as you think necessary. Note: As a judge I am not technical. I probably will not see "imperfections" in a photo. This does not mean I cannot understand composition and light but what will succeed is a subjective "feeling" in the image. The example are ghosts from growing up in a railroad family, Canyon de Chelly homage to Edward Curtis whose work I find very compelling, and John Ford Point in Monument Valley. His films draw me in although i have seen some a hundred times.

This Challenge ends February 15, 2020 12:00 (Midnight) US Eastern Standard Time.

The fine print:
Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax/Ricoh (DSLR) camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge

Sling Bag

To tie this up, I could not pass up a Lowepro AW 202 used from KEH. It was less than half the price of the current model which I assume is the AW 250. Anyway it was rated excellent and it got here overnight although I opted for slow-boat rate. I do not believe this bag was ever used. It is still rather stiff. The main compartment is more than necessary for a K-70 with 55-300 PLM attached, hood reversed although it would work with hood ready. The space left over was just right for a hood-loupe. The Rokinon 16 fits snug to one side and the Tamron 28-105 leaves plenty of room for the nifty 50 if I need to include it. Of course there is more than enough room for batteries and other stuff. Carrying a tripod is awaiting a rigorous play test. If the construction is as advertised I think the critter will do the job. I appreciate all the responses and agree with all the comments concerning the bags. See you in the field.

K-70 Panorama Photos

As noted not in-camera. I do panoramas with the K-70 often hand-held although you will retain more of the image with a tripod. I use Affinity Photo to stitch and process the image. There are Youtube vids that show the process in lightroom. You may want to watch a couple of vids on taking the pano to feel more comfortable with the process.

Sling Bag

I thought researching what camera to buy was hard, now I have tried sling bags. All my kit is in a moderate back pack (I have not be at it that long). It is inconvenient for a day in the park. I have never used my battery charger in the field. A minimal sling bag looks like an answer. Most of the "low end" ones get bad reviews from people who wait at least three months to review. Mostly, the bag does not last. I don't like to do returns so help me get it right the first time. I have a K -70. I have attached a Tamron 28-105 or a Pentax 55-300 PLM. I want to take whichever lens is not attached and a Rokinon 16mm. Beyond that are CP filters, batteries, and such. I do not take laptop, tablet, etc. It would be nice to attach a tripod but that seems to be a problem with most sling bags. Price is important but secondary to frustration.

I was faced with this choice and went here for advise. The consensus was the PLM was a better lens and at the time the price difference was 60 bucks and well worth going with the PLM. I cannot compare it to the other lens, however, I have not regretted the purchase.
