No calibration needed on my K3 Noel.

Some shots, handheld at 1/400 - 1/800 and f6.3 - f8. Images scaled down to < 1 meg so there's some loss in IQ. For a higher res version in this series see https://www.flickr.com/photos/30283858@N07/28418649302/in/album-72157657723646723/

Item for Sale
Pentax BG-5 K3 battery grip

Asking Price
150.00 AUD

Item Location
Melbourne (Australia)

Item Description
Well, what can you say about a grip? Other than it makes handling the body much easier when you have a tele lens on or you were blessed with oversize paws.

It's a very good design with key controls available to your index finger when held in portrait mode. It comes with a tray to take the standard camera battery and another to take AAs and I've found that very handy when in areas short of wall sockets.

This is in excellent condition and hasn't had a lot of use. About 2 years old now.

I don't believe it will fit a K-5 in case you were wondering.

US buyers will benefit from the low value of our peso and if you PM me your city and zip code I can quote you a shipping price with and without insurance.

SOLD, pending payment

Item for Sale
Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM

Asking Price
650.00 AUD

Item Location
Melbourne (Australia)

Item Description
Works with full-frame and of course APS-C on which the effective reach is c. 750 mm.

It's feasible to shoot hand-held with this given the inbuilt OIS. There's a second stabilisation mode for panning. HSM motor; 3 low dispersion elements.

Internals are very good. There is some scuffing on the lens hood.

All the forum members who reviewed this recommended it:
Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

Comes with original case, tripod collar, caps and instructions.

In Australia this is still available new at c. $1000.

Given the exchange rate US buyers will be paying around $500 for it.

Shipping will be at purchaser's expense.

This is one more photo in the next post.

Tokina AT-X AF SD 400mm f/5.6 Autofocus Lens Pentax KAF/K-1

Asking Price
300.00 AUD

Item Location
Melbourne (Australia)

Item Description
Tokina AT-X AF SD 400mm f/5.6 Autofocus Lens Pentax KAF/K-1

This is the pro version and it makes for a very nice walk-around lens. At c. 8" long it's compact and easy to handle for a long telephoto prime. Has internal focus and focuses down to about 8 feet. Super low Dispersion glass controls CA. Aperture can be set manually.

Lens internals are very good. There are some scratches on the lens hood. Comes with a Hoya HMC UV filter, caps and neoprene case.

This is a cost effective way of getting into bird or sport photography with a 600 film equivalent focal length on APS-C sensors.

AUD 300 is approx USD 224 making this a very good buy for US members.

The lens can be picked up or posted at buyer's expense.

Alongside my new hybrid camera the tele lenses on the K3 feel like they're from the stone age as far as AF speed goes. No point in preferring their IQ if there's no I to begin with when trying to handhold shoot BIFs.

I've been gathering tips to improve the AF success rate and image quality. Comments welcomed.

1. Turn off SR when panning.
2. Turn up the ISO to allow a fast shutter.
3. Leave the CPL off.
4. Set AF Hold to high.
5. Use 1 or 9 AF points. Views vary on whether going pink works.

Any other options?

My main problem is when failing to lock on, the DA300 prime goes down to minimum focus and back (and the bird's out of the frame). The Tokina 400mm f5.6 hunts fruitlessly.

First, I've said all along that what was included in the sale wasn't clear. The hood and case are standard inclusions, not accessories, with a new purchase. So it behooves a retailer, IMO, to make clear what's in and what's out and I remain of the view that the Adorama policy statement is not readily accessible. If it had been clear, I would've confirmed what came with this 2nd hand purchase, done the numbers on adding a case and hood, and not gone ahead with the purchase.

Let me provide an analogy. If you were in serious negotiations over buying a 2nd hand car made as a 7 seater, and the seller did not make clear 'til late that this version had had the 3rd row of seats removed, you would surely be surprised when you found out, wouldn't you?

Second, Helen, (b) in your post is incorrect. I never asked for anything to be posted to Australia. The original purchase I directed to my trans-shipping agent in the US. When Jorge agreed to provide the case and hood he offered either to send it there or to my home address in Australia.

I'd call the 2nd hand inclusions policy and particularly the way it's presented on the website as shall we say 'not best practice'.

But I applaud their prompt resolution of this matter.

So this is the upshot on Adorama's position: they are sticking to their policy as reproduced in DeadJohn's post above.

The lens hood wasn't listed as included so I shouldn't have expected it. Nor the case.

They will kindly replace the broken lens cap.

This is in my opinion woeful business practice, both in lack of clarity about what's included in a 2nd hand purchase, and in dealing with a customer service problem.

The upshot for other buyers is that you should inquire in detail about what comes with any 2nd hand deal. A standard inclusion with a new purchase is not standard here. In fact the item descriptions produced by 'amateurs' selling stuff here are done better. If there's not an original cap eg you are informed there's an aftermarket unit.

In my case, the lens hood that's missing fits only two Pentax lenses - so that means two lenses in the known universe. Amazon lists a new original unit, supplied by Adorama as it happens. $25 for the unit, and $73 to ship to Australia. With currency conversion, that would cost me AUD 133.

Adorama fails, three times.

Never ever again.

No, he sent an email.

In that he asked me to contact him by phone.

An international call is difficult, not least because of the 12 hour time difference.

I asked him to deal with this via email and he did so. There is to be no change to your obscurely posted policy.

Thanks for your reply Helen.

Yes, I use a shipping agent for goods sent to Australia. They offer more choices which is necessary when our dollar only buys 73 US cents.

I would have been able to document date of delivery here.

The 2nd hand DA* 300 ordered from them arrived here in Australia without the standard inclusions of soft case and lens hood. I would have thought it proper to mention those absences in the website listing. It would have influenced my decision.

Its lens cap was also broken.

Because of shipping time the unit is out of the 30 day return warranty. I had asked for this to apply from the date of delivery here, which I could document, but Adorama declined.

Congratulations!

After the advice here and more reading I pulled the trigger on a 2nd hand one from Adorama. It's not in brilliant condition but should functionally be OK. It'll be 5 weeks before it arrives and can be tested. May do some comparos.
