Saying goodbye to Flickr

I host my own photos and have done so for years. I use Lightroom 3.6 + the free Gallerific plugin. It takes very little effort to upload and organise images, as long as I have some idea of FTP and folder security. I then just share links and/or passwords with friends and family. It's a great way to share without losing control.

Here's a random example from a day hike on a computer monitor display. The plugin makes the gallery display nicely whatever the device or screen size.

The plugin is available at

Using a smartphone in one hand and a heavy dSLR in the other in order to simulate a missing articulated screen in the dSLR is asking more eye, hand, muscle, arm coordination and dexterity than my human body is capable of. I've tried it for 90 deg verticals, and it's extremely cumbersome and stressful. I like two hands on my Pentax for taking photographs. If the Pentax was as light as the smartphone, it would be a different case entirely; but it isn't, so it isn't.

I have the KP battery grip, but it makes the camera too bulky and heavy for me to carry for hours on end. Much easier for me to carry a couple of spare batteries. I love the visual design of the KP, but not enough to forgive the small battery and angular grip. With a crippled LCD making it less agile than the KP, the K-new undermines it's claim to be a flagship. I bought the KP last year because it was obvious to me that the K-new wouldn't have an articulated screen - a deal breaker for me in 2020.

The KP is a very capable camera, but it's not nearly as comfortable to hold as the K-5II. Its battery life is poor, made worse because the top LCD is missing - I have to use the back LCD as a substitute periodically. The tilt screen is really useful at times for waist-level shooting and live-view focus continuous single point tracking & recompose - I'm addicted to that very accurate and reliable AF method, only available in LV - it's also in the K-5. It can be marvellously convenient at times. Holding the camera at waist level with the screen tilted can also give me more physical control of the composition at times. The KP is everything I want in a stills camera, except for the small battery and lack of IR.

I suspect Ricoh designed the KP to be as small as possible, to distinguish it from the K-1. But they made a mistake in not keeping the large battery and K-7/5/3 grip design.

Will this mean even less third party lenses for Pentax?

I own two very good Sigma lenses: the HSM 8-16 and HSM 50-500. The 8-16 alone justifies me hauling a heavy Pentax camera thousands of feet and many miles into the mountains. It's a superb and unique lens. Since I got it eight years ago, I've hardly used the DA 15 Limited. The only downsides are that it doesn't have a filter thread, but the in-mount clip filters by STC work very well, and it's not weather sealed. The 8-16 beats the DA 15 always (except for it's lovely starbursts in the SMC version).

Is it necessary to make fun of members opinions? I fail to see the wisdom in mocking members. It's not cool. I'm sure you didn't intend any malice, but it doesn't come across that way. Let's just respect one another's opinions without descending into mockery. Thanks. Graham

Welcome!

Is this the lens? Takumar 105mm F2.8 (model 2)

The lens has aperture and preset aperture rings. Here's a good description of how to use a preset aperture, including the Takumar.

How to update Lightroom to support K-1 II

I still use Lightroom 3.6 from 2011 and can work with Pentax DNG raw files from the KP, released in 2017. I recommend you set the K-1ii raw format to DNG and use that with your version of Lightroom. I'm positive it will work without you needing to change to Adobe's subscription service.

The new optical viewfinder must be extraordinary to trade a few millimetres for usefulness. I wear glasses, shoot with my right eye and so have never found nose on LCD to be a problem personally. But Pentax obviously wants the photographer to be immersed as possible in their new viewfinder, without distraction or physical inconvience. I really hope they succeed. I've just ordered a second spare KP battery.

Am I alone in being saddened by the ever creeping sarcastic, snide and inevitable downward spiral of these threads? There's really no need to make fun of members because their photography needs are different. Diversity should be welcomed, not made fun of. It's a sure way to drive away members. Thanks.

I bought the KP precisely because it has a tilt screen. I would have preferred a fully articulated screen, but a fixed screen is a real handicap for waist-level or ground-level photography.

An analogy: MP3 and FLAC/WAV are to JPEG and RAW/DNG/TIFF despite the best efforts of Apple, Microsoft and others to supplant all of them with proprietary, better and more modern encoding. JPEG will be extremely persistent and difficult to replace. PDF is another format that's so universal that it will take something very extraordinary and compelling to replace it.

KP look and feel

I love the look of the KP - it's so reminiscent of the styling of Asahi Pentax SLRs, in the same way the DA 20-40 Limited is reminiscent of Takumar lenses. It shows the a care and respect for the AOC heritage by the Ricoh designers. I admire that very much. However much the styling may evoke a bygone era, the technology "under the hood" is almost magical.

Here's Wikipedia's photo of the Pentax 6x7 medium format camera. The simularity in styling is even more striking than the comparison with the ME Super above.

K-5 IIs or K-70?

I have a strong emotional attachment to the K-5II. Except for the tilt screen, I find the ergonomics of the K-5II superior to the KP. The size difference between the two is negligible, but the KP is noticeably lighter. But the KP has a very short battery life compared to the K-5 series. Both cameras produce excellent images, but the KP has the image size advantage for cropping, better low light performance, pixel shift, WiFi, focus peeking, aperture bracketing and moe customisation. Even so, there's no way I would sell my K-5II. The KP is a stop gap that I am much more inclined to sell when the new APS-C body is released.

The new camera looks very good. I can't wait to see just how different the viewfinder is. I like the emphasis on image quality. Pity about the rear screen being fixed and not articulated.

No articulating screen. Sigh. Why cripple the usability of a "flagship" in such a capricious way? It baffles me that a feature that many photographers need, me too, is absent for no good reason.

Better second camera: K3ii or KP?

I have two K-5IIs and a KP. The KP is a very good camera, but it just isn't ergonomically as good as the K-5II. The battery life is very noticeably shorter and it's not nearly as comfortable to hold as the K-5II, even with the large grip. For me, the KP's short battery life, lack of IR remote, small buffer, no top LCD, and uncomfortable grip are more than compensated by its low light performance, fast processing, better focusing and tilt screen.

My KP ordered from Amazon in the US came with all three grips.
I only use the large grip and still find it not as comfortable as the K-5.
The battery life sucks too compared to the K-5 series, so I got the battery grip as well, which makes the KP much nicer to hold.
