Pentax K5 (and Oly EM-5) to Sony A7?

You are ignoring the math - refer my previous post. It is technically NOT possible to have k-5 file with less info to have less artifacts than A7/a7r files having more info but I'll be happy to learn if you can prove it technically.

Again, the following is a simple calculation

K5 - 16MP*14 = 224 lossless Mbits
A7 - 24MP*11 + 24MP*3 = 264 lossless Mbits + 72Mbits lossy bits
A7r - 36MP*11 + 36MP*3 = 396 lossless Mbits + 108Mbits lossy bits

It is a fact that A7/a7r lossy compression having artifacts in some cases but it's worse only when compared against comparable cameras (FF, 24MP and above) but not against k-5.

A7/A7R lossy compression is well debated and I am aware of that. My point was that does it make it worse than K-5?

A7 and A7R files, even with their lossy compression, carry more lossless data than K-5. Lossless data in K-5 will be 16x14bit, while it will be 24x11 for A7 and 36x11 for A7r, not to forget there are still more not-so-lossy data there. Also, the larger pixel and resolution will results in a less quantization error. So I doubt K-5 can perform better than A7/A7r despite later having lossy compression but would be interesting to see otherwise.

Being a previous K-5 owner, I certainly find A7/A7r files treat to eyes.

It would be interesting to see visible evidence that A7x lossy compression files perform inferior to K-5. that's what OP is comparing.

A7 is a nice camera and a huge update from K5 (except IBIS). It's so cheap now that you should go for it. EVF is awesome for manual focus and eye focus is brilliant (for the price). Obviously, AF is not as good as the new Sony camera but still better than K5.

It is also one of the lightest FF camera (all the new Sony cameras with IBIS are at least 200gms heavier). I now moved to A7RIII but I kept original A7r because it feels so light compared to A7RIII.

Samyang 14mm is good, provided you get a good copy! Can be used with full frame too if you upgrade later.

I noticed that my ranking has changed from Pentaxian to Veteran member. Also, the market place access is blocked.

Just wondering what is this new ranking?

Thanks

Nikon Coolpix Model Q10125

Any idea what it is?

Today I bought a "Coolpix A" camera from a local classified. Although the camera appears to be working fine, images show "Nikon Corporation Q10125" as the model number in EXIF instead of "Coolpix A". Any idea what is Q10125?

Also noticed a few other things:
  • The serial number on the bottom is not the regular Nikon serial number but starts with "PT"

  • It is running firmware version C0.014 which appears to be quite old. I tried to update the firmware after downloading latest Coolpix A firmware from the Nikon website. However, the camera is not recognizing the new firmware on the SD card and doesn't give Update option. This may be due to model number mismatch.

Any idea?

Some more reports from a quick google search here, you'll rarely find this issue reported with other vintage pentax lenses.

Samyang is a beautiful lens. M85 is small but has bad CA and also prone to element separation. See if you can get hold of K85, much smaller than Samyang, and reasonably well controlled CA, sharp, though not 1.4.

well, arguable but what to say :) isn't it unfair that only one sided talk about praising of OVF and DSLR allowed? In such circumstances, no discussion can take place - you find EVF unpleasant, I find OVF obsolete, difference of opinion but that's what the platform is for. I didn't make any personal remarks, but then my post is reported to mods and deleted which only had comparison (funny that someone finding technical comparison offending). So I am done with this topic.

It's not about what I love, it's about what helps me make better pictures. Like many of you, I loved OVF for over 25 years but when I found a better alternative, I moved.

well, that's a very old argument for old EVF, you certainly didn't see how amazing A7r2/A9 EVF is, have you? And people don't realize that if scene in EVF clips, likely will clip in final output too - so you get feedback right on time instead getting surprises later. Photographers eye better get used to what the final output would be instead of what it is perceived by OVF. And of course, EVF helps Photographers eye much better with right focus, DoF preview , focus magnification. Regarding lag, agree but it's not even noticeable for general photography, maybe for sports photographer or panning which I am not into. And for a bit of disadvantage, I can't ignore the advantages EVF offers over OVF.

so? do I have to praise DSLR, just because it's in DSLR forum? Would love to see if you come up with logical arguments to stay on topics then getting personal.

what I said is that using SLR design in DSLR was a stop gap arrangement, please do not twist my words.

Can your optical TTL viewer do?
- Focus magnification
- Focus peaking
- live histogram
- view in dark (low light)

Attempt by Sony is not boresome, it's just awesome.

I doubt that photoptimist!. DSLR was just a stop gap arrangement, putting a new age digital image capture sensor in an age old mirror based film camera technology which is so prone to focusing error because of two separate path light takes. It was a brilliant thing to be done with film as film was a passive medium, blocking light and had no assisting role in viewing. Moreover, it worked with film as film is more forgiving to focus misalignment than digital sensor.

For digital, the natural approach was to use the same sensor for capturing and viewing both, also to make use of it for feature like zoom-in to be sure the everything is being capture the way it is (like some of the MF camera did). However, it could not achieved then due to the limitation of liveview and EVF technology. Today, things have improved tremendously, all image sensors are capable of live viewing, and EVF has evolved from early day to what we see in Sony A7R2/A9. So now there is no reason to continue to use same old DSLR technology.

Being an owner of EVF based cameras from Sony NEX6 to A7r2, I would say, I would never go back to OVF. My in-focus rate have been improved even when shooting at f1.4, without fiddling with focusing screens and shims etc, never witnessed health issues (I don't to panning though where such issues where reported). Also let's remember that we are talking about the future, so even these technologies have any limitations, they will improve onward.

Just like any stop gap technologies, DSLR may still survive a few more years but is it a future? definitely not.

[On a side note, can you guess how many percentage of novice DSLR users uses LCD to compose than OVF? you will be surprised, it's quite a large number.]

oh that I still stand by, DSLR is a dead, well almost :)

it's not SOny cameras, every cameras sale has been dropped, but among that shrinking market, what will stay is mirrorless. like it or not :)

I only said it's shrinking :)

I also maintained both DSLR and mirrorless for sometime, but now only the mirrorless because of compact size and EVF. EVF consistently gave me reliable results in terms of focus accuracy so no going back to OVF and so to DSLR.

Still love shooting with SLR though (ME Super) but that's a different story. EVF pairs more naturally with digital photography. The EVF technology was limited earlier to justify OVF use in DSLR. But now it has reached to the point that digital photography is best complimented with EVF only.

Yes and no. Yes if you only see absolute number. No, if you see the trend and ratio between DSLR/mirrorless sale which has reduced drastically, approaching one from a large number and won't be long before mirrorless overtakes.

DSLR market is now mostly driven from a few loyalist and those who never owned a serious camera before & often end up buying DSLR just because that's what only thing they heard of serious cameras. Often people come to me to seek advice on their first camera purchase and sometime all they want to hear is Nikon/Canon. So if I ask them to go Sony mirrorless route, they are often surprised by the suggestion - this is not what they wanted to hear and most of them end buying Nikon/Canon. Reason, that's what they saw their friend and family shooting with it and that's where they want their first serious investment going. Do we call them market mover, yes, that's mostly working in DSLR favour for now but not for long.

It's going to be a viscous circle, DSLR user base will continue to shrink and so is the profit margin, to the point that camera manufacturers have to raise price to sustain making DSLR for the smaller user base. And this will further shrink the DSLR user base.

We like it or not, DSLR is dead, more and more pro's moving towards mirrorless - and for now the best choice is Sony mirrorless. Any manufacturer who want to stay in market have to take mirrorless route.

Pentax is no exception, even that requires changing mount - Sony exactly did that, moving from A to E mount.
