The German site Heise.de reports that Sony outsold Canikon in FF in Nov and Dec

They were referring to this here: Sony G Master-Objektive: Erste Bilder mit FE 24-70mm F2.8 und FE 85mm F1.4 | c't Fotografie

And the core sentence is:

Code:

Wenn man Sony glauben darf, durfte sich der Hersteller zumindest in Deutschland im November und Dezember 2015 mit etwa 34 Prozent – einem hauchdünnen Vorsprung – Marktführer bei den Vollformatkameras nennen.

In short English:
  1. The winner was declared by himself (pure Sony marketing slogan, no facts, no sources, no independend statement)

  2. Even this only relates to two months only.

  3. German market only.

In that spirit Canon can create a dozen success stories about their Canon M series being a winner in Japan.

Crop lens on FF ISO performance

Roughly, no. And under the assumption that you crop x1.5.
Cropping in post is "digital zooming" for all intents and purposes if you create same size output.
And you "zoom in" on the "noise spots" as well.

If you own a Canon 5Ds and crop to same resulting pixelcount you'll even have worse noise.

It's even worse.

Many beginners interpret the restrictions that "newer" is "better". And they think "better" means "always better".
Newer generation can be worse. And it can be worse in some exposure settings and better in others.

This is why at base ISO old tech APSC K-5 II should expected be more than one stop worse than new tech FF Sony A7RII with regards to dynamic range.
"Equivalency" rule of thumb predicts the Sony will be better by 1,17 stops just for the larger sensor. And usually 4-5 years newer generation sensor mean about 0.3-0.5 stops technical improvement. So you would think the Sony outperforms the Pentax by 1,5-2 stops.
But in reality you have the old Pentax APSC outperform the Sony FF by 0.2 stops:
Sony A7R II vs Pentax K-5 II
So suddenly your equivalency rule of thumb is off reality for about 2 stops here (this is twice the amount people in forums call "a totally different league" :)). And this only applies at base ISO. Change ISO, change results.

And yes, since about half the FF cameras out there are Canons, it doesn't work well in about half the real camera comparison cases anyway.

No more than a tiny bit (just the bit that technology has advanced). But nothing* from the sensor size (obviously).

With regards to noise we always only talk about "perceived noise" and that goes up with cropping and subsequent magnification to output size.

*=But: If the image circle is a little, say x1.2 larger than APSC then you can use it and need to magnify less, which will result in x1.2 less perceived noise.

By the way: Since your eyes don't resolve even 16 MPx from "normal viewing distance" you need to get closer to the output image to gain any benefit from the 16 MPx - thus effectively magnifying it then. Boom. Down goes your dynamic range and up shoots your perceived noise. Physics tell you there is a simple either/or decision to be made: enjoy either lowest perceived noise OR enjoying high resolution/details/sharpness. It is impossible to enjoy both at the same time.

What do we learn about a person, who - after being married for 3 years - still "visits" (without ever being invited) his first beautiful ex-girlfriend on a weekly basis just to shout at her "you are so much worse than my current wife" a dozen times? ;)

The internet sadly seems to collect these types, though.

That is some very naive view on the world of consumer electronics pricing.

Sony is not "getting" certain prices (aside from a few diehard early adopters who will buy at any price), but all we know is they would like to get these prices.

Sony for years now has an old design $3000 (!) 70-200/2.8 lens which compete with 70% cheaper Sigma variants, because it is priced a lot higher than the much better market leading Canon variant, still they WANT that price.
Ever met any professional photographer using the rip-off Sony lens? ;) Surprising, isn't it?

Hasselblad was getting market leading prices for their Lunar cameras, which obviously are much nicer than the new A7R II-cameras...

Sony is just quite reckless / ignorant with their pricing approach. It is open to debate what kind of consumer with which knowledge and skill level succumbs to this type of approach usually.

A used Sigma 35/1.4 plus a speedbooster clone together yield a 23/1 APSC lens which can be bought on today's used market for roundabout 600 EUR, netting excellent image quality. Quite affordable I would say. And obviously possible.

Some Canon kids spend 4 times as much on a lens which results in the exact same images on FF. ;)

That actually is cherry picking partial arguments you personaly want to push. Either we account for actual market availability or not.

If we we forget theory and check real availability we see no FF lens being able to compete with the portability and handiness of the DA 15 limited. And only then you can say FF can deliver more shallow DoF than APSC. Similarly there are no nicely portable FF competitors to mFT UWA zooms, only clunky huge monsters available from CaSonikon.

If we stick to theory and forget real availability certainly you could build a smallish FF DFA 22mm F5.6. But all the same you could easily build a 23mm F1 APSC lens so nobody complains about it missing versus a FF 35/1.4

Either or. You always could build an equivalent lens, but they simply don't do it in reality always.

Ah, you must be referring to Pentax approach in the old K-5s. Something they do not do in their current flagship models K-3 or K-3 II.

This Raw-Denoising approach was so worthwhile that Canon decided to copy Pentax here (again) for their very current $5000 flagship pro model:
See "Canon EOS 1DX smoothed" - Canon EOS 1Dx : Measurements - DxOMark

And please don't even try to split hairs here by discussing at which ISO level you do this. It's either acceptable or not in a $400 (Pentax) and a $5000 (Canon) camera.

The fastest glass you can use today on the 645Z is the Hasselblad Planar T* 2/110 mm FE lens: http://www.hasselbladhistorical.eu/pdf/lds/FE110_2.pdf

That's not too bad as it seems:
Review: The Pentax 645Z is a Wedding Photographer's Medium Format Dream

It's roughly the equivalent of a 85mm/1,4 lens on a 36x24 crop sensor. And that's probably for most people the maximum you'll ever want or need in people photography (on Nikon anyway, the step to F1,2 on Canon is not a big one - the decline in sensor performance for the 36x24 crop format is, though).

Who would use such a definition? The No.1 DSLR maker (Canon) has a mount diameter of about 53mm, so inserting sensors of measly 36x24mm means they are all heavily cropped sensors in 1DX and cheaper models. And they have no FF lenses either (the Tilt ones aside)

The current Q might be full frame though. :)

The only definition which would make sense is to compare a sensor format to the largest sensor format available in consumer IL-cameras (currently full 645 such as PhaseOne). The latter is "full" anything smaller is "crop".

Sigma fanboys always refuse to believe that Sigma still has an unchanged quality control issue.

I had several Sigma lenses and none of them worked as advertised. There is only the cheapness to work for Sigma in general if you like to gamble with the risk of it.

The continuous problems with Sigma lenses are also caused by poor design decisions.
The size quality of the new art lenses is poor as everyone knows.
The weight quality of the lenses is poor as well.
The cheap plastic feel is not good either.
The repeated quality problems of the Sigma 18-35 are not only quality control but probably a design screw-up where they chose a wrong part tolerance.
The really bad focus shift on the 50mm non-art also is a Sigma design problem.

And why do you think Sigma has to offer multiple years of warranty where Canon does not? Simply because nobody in the right mind would want to buy this otherwise.

Which other manufacturer has so poor quality control as to sell repair kits (USB docks) for their lenses?

And no: The most stupid thing you can do is to send a camera body to calibrate a lens. Both lenses and body have to be calibrate to a neutral setting. Else you will have to re-calibrate all lenses for a new body.

Is this maybe Sigma's idea of an "art lens"? :)

If anyone does not wish to buy an SDM lens older than 5 years he certainly shouldn't buy a new Sigma 18-35 "art" lens. You can find some good copies out there, but you definitely should be aware of the risk with Sigma.

I do think even advocating this lens without clear quality warning is just reckless. That is not bashing that is being fair and honest to other people and their money.

That is what Sony does 100%.

For the FE Alpha Mount there basically are only fully rebadged Tamron and Cosina lenses out there.

Any "Sony" FE lens is actually a Tamron product.
Any "Zeiss" FE lens is actually a Cosina product. Cosina factory, Cosina Equipment. Talk about rip-off.

This here helps:
What's in a name? Zeiss provides details on lens partnerships and production: Digital Photography Review

This whole discussion is worthless as all that counts is that the actualy product is good price versus delivered results (small size, light weight, non-plastic-material, color rendition, flare-resistance. resolution, bokeh etc).

C'mon. Do you have a serious review? DPR is more fanboy children at play with funny little tools, but little know-how.

Basically they state the latest Sony doesnt really focus anywhere near as well as modern entry Level DSLRs for a tenth of the cost.
Another typical Sony fail (and not the only one in that camera).

A K-S2 focusses down to -3 EV with AF sensors looking through a F5.6 optical path, so they do this with any kit lens. Those SAFOX sensors are that sensitive.
The Sony sensor obviously is not. It seems to suck big time.

With the Sony on sensor AF they only get to -2 when sticking to a F1.4 lens. That is a whopping 5 stops (!) worse performance on the Sony on an average users kit lens as that means it only works down to +3 using a darker F5.6 lens. And still 4 full stops worse Performance than a K-S2 on a relatively fast 300mm F4 prime.

I am actually disturbed that Sony has not managed to even get remotely near average entry level DSLR performance after so many years of testing and beta-models (they call them Alpha:)).

That is a good sign.

It seems to be the exact same Survey Pentax/Ricoh Europe had published 6 weeks ago.

Questionnaire K-S2 - RICOH IMAGING - European Hub Site

So they seem to run this globally not just in some local markets.
Considering where they come from this is next to a revolution. Next time maybe their local guys manage to do it all in parallel around the world.

The key is driving home the message that they should get more interactive in their communications and be more open to user suggestions which do not involve a lot of Investment (imagine the deliberate Limit of 30 seconds for shutter time. How difficult can it be to change that to 60 seconds or more?)

That is already the case with any current DSLR, due to the autofocus.
Only 50%* is reflected to the viewfinder, the rest goes through the semitransparent mirror to the secondary mirror and then down to the autofocus sensors.
People falsely believe the mirror in a classic DSLR is not transparent. And transparency means loss of light for the viewfinder (and the light metering System which is up there too).

*=That is a guess, but more light in the viewfinder inevitably means less light for the autofocus module. And who wants the autofocus to be a poor low light performer?

I do have to say, I couldn't imagine a better (reasonable) response to an (albeit small) issue than the above. It was issued quickly, I don't have to worry about warranty periods and there is quite some monetary compensation offered.
Best would be if all Pentax market units would adopt this approach. Basically as ever it all comes down to the quality of local sales / marketing management.

If you refer to the local US-American Service advisory quoted in this forum: not at all. It is anything but global.

The local German message is quite different (would be fun to check the French and Spanish Versions):
  1. They do not actively recall any or all units, they just offer servicing for free as the bug is quite exotic (on all local Pentax Forums - and they combined have more Pentaxians than this forum here - there seems to be just one single instance).

  2. This servicing is explicitly not only offered for the first two years, but offered for the full lifetime of the camera, so if you're hit in three years they'll fix it in three years for free. This makes sending it in really not a top priority for all happy users.

  3. As an excuse for the effort to send it in, buyers will receive a free FluCard with the camera (which you can sell for about 80 EUR aftermarket here), so that's quite a good deal.

  4. The bug is described much more precisely (than your local version) to happen mostly when the camera has been without battery for alonger time and then is being started again using a fully charged battery. This obviously for most users is a scenario which only applies to the box shipped new. 100% of users I know leave a battery in the body at all times unless they only have one and then only for a couple of hours when they charge the battery.

As an aside: As far as informal infos go, the repair center fixes the thing in camera, so obviously from a couple of days ago the real world will contain K-3 II units in the risky serial number range which have been serviced and are all fine now. They are in no case swapping out complete bodies.

Mine is in the affected number range, but I do feel no need to fix a perfectly running system. Maybe I'll have it checked this or next winter, when I use it less.

Nope, that only applies to yesterday-tech companies, such as Nikon, Canon, Sony.

Canon is running behind with 14 FPS * 16Mpx = 224 MPx/s, yes that is true.
Nikon is even farther behind with 11 FPS * 16 MPx = 176 MPx/s (or 5*36=180)

But half a year ago Samsung had no issues with 15 FPS * 28 Mpx = 420 Mpx/s Transfer rate, about +100% faster than Canons flagship camera. That would be 11-12 FPS for 36 Mpx.
And that was half a year ago, a new camera will be faster as engineers build faster Chips every day.

The mirror on the 1DX Shows that the FF mirror mechanism can deliver 14 FPS and is no bottleneck.

Honestly this "Focus breathing" is a non issue if the lens has got the right magnification, as the key question is what do you want to achieve?

The old Nikkor das have relatively little focus breathing (it is actually 177mm at the nfd), but that doesnt help it much with the nfd being a clumsy 1,5m for this short tele reach.

Usually People want magnification. This is where the old great Tamron 70-200 shines with x0,32 versus x0,16 of the old Nikkor (and x0,12 of the new one).

The DFA is 122mm at the nfd with a max magnification of x0,13 (the actual focal length can be calculated quite easily).

The real sucker here is the new Sony FE 70-200 with a mere 108mm remaining at nfd (and a magn. of x0,13).

APS-C vs FF Bokeh?
Posted By HavelockV
Replies: 35

Lesson 1:
Bokeh is not DoF is not Background blur. Three completely different concepts.
  1. Bokeh is purely your aesthetic opinion and can not be measurbated at all. A smartphone can have very pleasing bokeh, while a very fast FF lens can have shitty bokeh.

  2. DoF is easy to calculate but not intentionally the topic of most discussions.

  3. Background blur is loosely related to DoF but can be smaller with more DoF or larger with more DoF as it takes distances between subject and background into account (which primitive DoF calculations completely ignore).

If you encounter people who mix this up (e.g. talk about "the bokeh effect" or "DoF" all the time), they dont have a clue.

All this old, repetitive Sony (or what ever else) fanboydom has no place here (Pentaxforums), just as the constant "they should do this - what I personally want" has not place in a "news and rumors" section.
