Rain over the Sangre de Cristos

After the bulk of the storm had the passes, the sun peeked out and the water in the two-track. It does not take much rain to make this "road" impassable, so I stepped out of the car to see how greasy the surface was. It was greasy. I probably should have turned around, but then I would have missed this shot. North Eastern New Mexcio. Where the mountains meet the plains.

This is the one lens I would buy today if it were available. I would be happy with 24-120, or even 105, but 150 would be amazing!

Maybe 8 of them are for the new mirrorless mount...

Sorry, I could not resist.

Is Panasonic really selling that many MILCs? I have not heard any market share numbers for them, so I really have no idea, but I have never seen one in the wild. Looking on B&H, the S1H is the 16th best selling MILC, the GH5 is number 23 and the GX85 is number 29.

You are probably right. However, it is pretty long in the tooth, and people are still buying it. I would have thought everyone who wanted a z had long since purchased one.

As old as it is, the Z is currently the third best selling medium format camera on B&H. The Fuji GFS 50X is number one and the 50R is number two. The X1D is all the way down at number 13, behind several other Hasselblads and a couple Mamiya.

I think there is still room for a Zii, but they are going to have to compete with Fuji on price, or go full frame 645.

Kansas City

I have never spent much time in KC, but have driven through numerous times. I love the view from westbound 670 after you pass under the convention center. It feels like you are in the bowels of the city, and than all of a sudden you pop out and you are on top of the world. I would recommend looking for a side street that goes along the bluffs and see if you can find a nice overlook. This would probably be better for sunset shots though as you would be facing west. If you drive west into Kansas a mile or two you might be able to find a place on the opposite bluffs and get some nice morning shots of sunrise over the city.

I don't know... Inside a trench coat? Cover the Nikon logos with Masking tape and write "Pentax" on it. Wear very baggy pants. I am sure there are lots of ways to smuggle a large lens into an intimate gathering. Shooting with it while there, that might be a little harder.

It varies greatly. Sometimes less than a minute. Sometimes much longer. The ones that tale longer are either really good shots that I want to get the most out of, or more commonly really bad shots I am trying to salvage.

I second Steve's point. My default is +10 on vibrance, and I just about never touch the saturation slider. "Mystery" is a good way to describe it. I tell my students that vibrance is like smart saturation slider.

Concerning bears it is important to know what kind of bear you are dealing with. Grizzlies are much more concerning than back bears. If you are lucky you may spot a grizzly in Yellowstone or the Tetons. You will only see black bears in Colorado. Western back bears by the way, are often brown or cinnamon in color, and can be anything from blond to black.

When you are in Yellowstone if you come across any bear scat on the trail it will be easy to distinguish if it came from a black bear or a grizz. Black bear scat is typically black in color, usually found in a single pile and had obvious seeds in it. Grizzly bear scat smells like pepper and has bells in it.

It would be interesting if we could compare these stats across different name plates. I would suspect Canon and Nikon sell more kit lenses (proportional to their over all sales) because they sell a higher proportion of entry level cameras. We could guess that Pentax sells more primes because Pentax caters more to the enthusiast camera market and less to the entry level. Of the top selling K mount lenses on B&H right now, the number 1, 4, 6, 8, 9, and 10 are all primes. And 1 and 6 are both 50mm.

Mirrorless and DSLR dinosaur collapse cont'd: Nikon profits down -27%, sales -18%

Obviously none, but neither does any current Pentax camera CURRENTLY in production. However, I do recall a Ricoh patent for some sort of a hybrid viewfinder. It is possible that Nikon is working on something similar and is worried about infringing on Ricoh's patent. I realize this is wishful thinking, and I intended to frame it as such. "Wouldn't it be nice if it is a Ricoh patent they are worried about? If it is, what would it be?"

That being said, your guess of Sony's IBIS sounds plausible. At the same time, it would seem to me like it could be something that is still under development and not in any current cameras. The wording suggests they do not yet know if they are infringing on someone's patent. This could be because the product is incomplete and they are still trying to work around a patent. On the the other hand, maybe Sony sued Nikon for copying their IBIS system and they are waiting on a judgment that may result in paying royalties to Sony.

It is a cryptic statement that lends itself to speculation.

Yes, it appears there is something specific they are afraid of. Would love to know what it is. Wouldn't it be great if it is a Ricoh patent they are worried about? Hybrid viewfinder?

I am still pretty happy with my K-5. If money was no object, I would have upgraded to the K-1, but in the current chapter of my life, it is hard to justify that cost when the K-5 is good enough. With each new model, less and less people feel the need to upgrade, so the camera companies need to rely on new users for sales.

If he is setting the camera at ISO 100 but it is actually shooting at 1600 it would be overexposed by 4 stops. When he sets it to 200 it overexposes by three stops. When he sets it to 1600 is exposes properly.

The watches I wear have batteries that typically last for three or four years, often more. By that point the watch is probably pretty beat up anyway.

If the weather sealing is your concern you may want to put a dab of silicone on the ding and call it good. Replacing the bottom plate quite possible could impact the weather resistance. Water proof watches are often no longer water proof after the battery is replaced. I don't think I would take the chance.

Ricoh WG-6 / G900 / Theta Z-1 get delayed

You seem to be forgetting the lens factory in Vietnam where all Pentax lenses are made (save for the Tamron rebadges and the Q series) and the factory in the Philippines where the Pentax bodies are produced. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were referring to compact cameras, some of which have been produced by third parties. However, that does not jive with your talk of other delayed products. I assume that is referring to the Pentax lenses, produced in house at the Pentax (Ricoh) factory. I am not aware of any recent delays of products that have not been produced in house. Let me know if I am missing something.

As to a reason for this delay, my best guess would be that the early produced examples were not meeting quality standards.
