Who else would like to see a retro Pentax camera ?

Having shot and own Spotmatics, K1000, MX, SF1n, MZ5n and MZ7. I think only cameras like the MZ5n would be a suitable model for a retro digital camera. Digital cameras are too heavy to not have a handle and the SF models were too ugly.

But I definitely would not be in the market for a retro digital camera. I still shoot film and I use my Hasselblad more often than my K5IIs plus have MX and Rolleichord if I want something that looks old.

If Pentax was to produce one they should be like the Fuji X100 in not letting the retro looks be in the way of being a good camera to use.

The K1000 is a good camera to learn on as it has so few features. I learned in a Spotmatic don't remember the model as that was in 1973

Rob is correct focus and learning the basics and everything else will fall into place. Warning though this forum has too many posters that will try to get you to buy more and more gear. My theory is their reason is for them to then tell their spouses that they are not that bad , look at how much stuff this other guy has. 😀. Maybe I exaggerate a little.

There are many film shooters on this forum, some are relatively new at it and others started probably around the same time as your grandmother for her ME Super or even before that.

This is a friendly place and never be afraid to ask questions about either photography or your cameras.

Is your location Saskatchewan?

Traveling to Iceland

I'll be going on my third trip to Iceland in October, can't help you much in way offset Advil be shooting medium format film authorities concern about the weather. I don't expect long days as I'll be in the northern portion of the Westfjords.

I've lived most of my life at the same latitudes as Iceland but at the continental climate in other words colder and dryrer. Later your clothes and take and baby extra batteries.

Crazy?? DA 21 (SMC) vs HD 18-50mm for very small walk-around lens

Of I'm just going walking or cycling with no real intention for specific shots I usually take my RD 18-50 L DA instead of my limiteds. If wishing to travel light but still wanting to do some serious photography I take 3 of my limited with 2 of them in a lens case on my belt and the third on the camera.

The RE is light and has a decent range and is water resistant. You are not crazy to use it as a walkabout lens plus it's so cheap it does not exclude you from afterwards buying the limiteds. I have the SMC versions of the 15, 21, 40 and 70. Occasionally I might take the RD on the camera and the 70 and 15 in the belt case.

On the other hand if we end up going to Antarctica next year I'll probably pick up a used 18-85 for the small boat trips to landing and maybe on the kayaks.

Most posters here advise you to buy buy buy in order for their buying to appear normal.

K-5

My wife bought a K5 and I a K5IIs , both when they became discontinued. We see no reason to upgrade to something newer, but then we are always on the trailing edge of technology. I did upgrade my Pentax film camera from a MZ7 to the ND and I now shoot primarily film in medium and large format.

The K5 series of cameras were a great value and model and remain as very useable and sufficient for a great number of folks. Also with Pentax releasing new lenses that do not operate on them it solves GAS. 😀

My wife would not have upgraded from her K10D had she not broken it.

Enjoy your new camera and may you create a World of images that make you happy and proud. If you are not earning your living from photography then being happy, pleased and proud of your work is all that you can ask for from a camera.

I used that Nikon for a trip to Yellowstone. At a grizzly sighting I still had one of the smaller lenses. So glad I never dropped or list it.

Probably not. I just don't shoot digital enough to justify the cost. I'm satisfied with my K5iis and my wife with her K5.

Sounds like a great camera though. I'd be interested in seeing how the SC DA limited perform on it.

Dedicated Camera Bodies (& The Lenses They Hang With)

The only Pentax camera I use with a dedicated lens on it is my WGIII but only because I have not figured out how to change it. For non pentax camera there are my Rolleichord, Holga and Brownies.

For my Pentax digital cameras I have two cameras and three zooms, including two rather cheap ones but 5 primes and my MX with 3 M series primes

Good Bye K5, Welcome Back MX

I still use my K5iis however the MX is the latest camera I have purchased. I don't use it that much as I prefer medium format square images (Hasselblad, Rolleichord and Holga plus pinhole cameras)

Digital and analog are so different, especially if you have a darkroom and shoot mostly black and white but then I ride both a road bike and a hardtail. I don't think I would want to have to choice to use only one medium for all my photography. A couple of years ago we went to the Hebrides (second time) and I took my Hasselblad, pinhole and the WGIII. That is all I need for travelling as long as one can still take film on flights.

There is just something about just knowing you got your image and then having to wait until you hand the negs to make sure you didn't screw up in the developing.

28mm Limited for APS-c?

Do we know that Pentax can't afford to continue making compact apsc lenese? It's not like they need to make too many new ones. And for crop shooters who want fast lenses FF can be bought

28mm Limited for APS-c?

Wouldn't that mean lens like the Da 21 and 15 would need to be larger? It may be good for >40mm lenses but not so for those wider. As long as they are making apsc cameras they should keep making small lenses for them.

Full-frame vs. cropped lenses on APS-C camera

As a large format shooter I am well aware of image circle. But if a lens has an image circle is over welding much larger than you would require that all you have done is carried more weight than you needed to.

FF lenses are only more versatile if you use both a FF and a APS-C camera. A DA-F lens is less versatile to me than a FA, F. A, M or K lens based on my FF is a MX so new lenses are not of much use.

I use a lens that will cover a 11X14 inch piece of film on my 4X5, 5X7 and 6 1/2 by 8 1/2 inch cameras. Image circle is important in coverage but having more coverage than required often caries the 9rice of being more expensive and heavier neither which are advantages to me

Very true. I stayed with Pentax even though I was working at a all Nikon shop with a staggering array of lens because my wife wanted the K10D instead of a Nikon.

We share equipment from Pentax, Hasselblad and large format. She allows me to buy whatever gear I wish, knowing I'm a miser, but frowns on me selling anything. 45 years and counting. Pentax for the entire time starting with matching black Spotmatic F.

I find the DA-L does exactly what I want from it. In poor weather I use it instead of my 4 limited lenses plus it takes up next to no space mounted onto my infrared K01.

Small, inexpensive (bought here used) WR and acceptable quality. I never worry about its build though it is a bit difficult to extend if I haven't used it in a while however that is my brain not the lens at fault.

I would probably have purchased a better zoom lens if I wasn't invested in the 15,21,40 and 70 or needed it for action type things. It takes up no space or weight in my camera bag which is the factor that was most important for me when I bought it and so far zero regrets

If Pentax makes a 43 Ltd as well as the 40 Da Ltd and the 40 DA Xs I don't see how a DA28 Ltd would affect sales of the FA31. For one thing look at the price difference between the FA and DA limiteds.

But compared to a Fuji GX680 the RB and RZ are small light cameras. Compared to the RZ my 500 c/m is light which is heavy compared to my Rolleichord which is heavier than my MZ7 which is much larger and heavier than my A110.

My regret in not buying a Pentax medium format was a few years before the 645D came out thete was a 645 with 3 lenses for $600 CDN for sale that I didn't even look at.
