2021 slow camera releases
Posted By Jonathan Mac

The R3 ought to be out before too long.

And there have probably been a few Leica special editions...

Fewer cameras are being sold, especially at the low end, which means rising prices for those that do sell and fewer units sold. That all adds up to less development of new models, particularly at the low end.

This is the "new normal" for camera releases, as has been clear for a few years now.

Thanks for the tip - I see it's also available for Chrome.

Seems like a non-issue for me, certainly not something to write an article about. It's hardly surprising that anything with the 1.5kg 28-70/2 feels front-heavy but if you can't handle the gear you use then either (A) you're holding it wrong, (B) you need to reconsider that gear or (C) you need to get yourself down to the gym and build a little muscle.

The 35mm film struggle is real....

I love FP4+, I think it's my absolutely favourite lower ISO B&W film, but for higher ISOs I find Delta 400 far superior to HP5+. So I would use FP4+ as my slower film and Delta 400 as the faster one.

Anyone else miss the K200D?

I bought a similar "smart" charger and I believe it is better for the batteries but the K200D has always been dodgy in this respect. I initially bought it thinking the AA batteries would be a plus but they were anything but. I think I spent much more on multiple sets of batteries than I did on the single additional battery I've needed for my K-3.

The original or the massively over-priced new one that doesn't even have a proper working mount on it?

Not received yet but in principle I've bought a Miranda TM, which was also sold as the Soligor TM. It's similar to other Miranda SLRs but has an M42 mount rather than their own bayonet mount, which makes it much more suitable for me.

The camera, like many Mirandas, has interchangeable viewfinders, and is probably the cheapest way to get such viewfinders. Really I'm only bothered about having a waist-level one, which I've wanted for ages because (A) they look very cool, (B) I think they'll be good for street shooting and (C) they look very cool. A couple of years ago I bought a different Miranda plus a 50mm and a 35mm. The camera doesn't focus properly (I suspect degraded foam) and the focus on the 50mm is very stiff, so basically none of it is useable. I should have returned it all as soon as I got it as it was all marked as being fine, but I missed the opportunity and got stuck with it. I have eye and waist level VFs for it though and I believe they'll fit the TM, so I'll sell off the dodgy stuff for repairs once the TM gets here. It comes with a 50/1.8 so that'll be something new to try out regardless, and even if it's junk I have quite a few M42 lenses to choose from.

I'm also waiting to hear back on a good deal on the SMC F 35-70mm, which could replace my non-SMC version, and an old Canon kit zoom in black, which could replace the silver version I have. Non-SMC and silver Canon would then be sold on and I think I'll even make a bit of money on them.

Digital film roll concept

Maybe they could add in occasionally and randomly ruining one of those "rolls" because it dropped off while in the machine and all you get is 36 blank exposures because it was in the chemicals for threehours instead of a few minutes...

Only joking. No-one would buy such a camera.

Buy a film camera and use it, it's lots more fun.

I don't PP that much and when I do it's almost always in-camera, one of the reasons I like Pentax (and Fujifilm) cameras is the ability to do this.

I don't see why there would be any difference if the exposure is the same. Old manual lenses can be slightly less precise in exposure due to the limitation of where the aperture clicks are, and they're never more frequent than 1/2 stops, whereas on modern lenses it's 1/3.

I had a lot of problems with AA batteries in my K200D, even using Eneloops. The number of times I went out with fully-charged batteries and found that I couldn't shoot because the camera didn't recognise that they were charged... AAs are everywhere but most are Alkaline, which aren't great. Lithiums are what you really need if you're using single-use ones, and they're expensive. Eneloops (and similar from other brands) claim to be sold as charged but that's very rarely true, so they can't be used on the spot if you find yourself short.

The probability of dangerous clots is higher with a CoViD-19 infection than from the vaccine but I don't think anyone can say if the people who do get them after vaccination would be the same people that would have gotten them if they'd gotten CoViD.

Are you aware that there are much cheaper 35mm f/0.95 options for X mount that have essentially the same performance? I have my eye on a 7Artisans one, over here it's 270.

This is the only 50mm macro I've tried that would have a serious chance of replacing a non-macro fast fifty for general use. It's a fantastic lens.

For $10 with a fast fifty it's a bargain though.

Interestingly, a Miranda TM popped up on my radar this morning. The price is 45, which I think is reasonable.

That's not a bad price. An X-T20 should be similar in price and size and (I think) identical in functions with the addition of a tilting screen.

Ricoh GR IIIx announced. new 26.1 mm lens (40mm eq)

I'm well served for something more compact by my Fujifilm gear, but I would never consider a camera with a fixed 28mm equivalent lens, it's far too wide for general use. 35mm would be the minimum and 40mm probably even better.

I think the new "x" variant will allow Ricoh to compete with the Fujifilm X-100 series cameras, though I think I'd probably still go for the Fujifilm for it's extra stop if nothing else.

I find I'm more often the other way around. I have read about other photographers who prefer to wait a few days before reviewing and that way they find they're better able to assess the results.

K28 f3.5 Vs M28 f2.0

There are a few old lenses that I would say the same for - the M 35/2, the A 28/2.8 and the K 28/2 come to mind.

The M 28/2 seems to be extremely rare. I believe Nick Clark on the forum also has one. Personally I don't think I've ever even seen one for sale. I'd like to get my hands on one one day, if only to compare it to the other good 28mm lenses I have, especially the K 28/2.

I also have the K 28/3.5 and it's a superb lens but I don't use it much as I have a lot of other similar options which are mostly at least a little faster and, with the exception of the K 28/2, probably all smaller and lighter too.

Colours are a product of many things - sensors, processing settings, processing engine, lens design, lens coatings, the light itself...

I do like Pentax colours generally, I think they're one of the real strengths of the system. I also like the colours from my Fujifilm gear, although they're different. Canon are generally very good too. I don't like Nikon colours at all. I've heard that Olympus are very good and that Sony and Panasonic are generally poor. Of course, those are SOOC, you can do anything you like with a bit of PP.

A lot of it is down to preference.
