In Ricoh Imaging's land, the GR III is not a niche camera. Together with the Theta, it's the product that maintained Smart Vision afloat until the Covid-19 outbreak.

Anyway, I agree that a hypothetical GR IIIm would sell less, in comparison with the GR III, than the K-5 IIs in comparison with the K-5 II. That's the reason why I made the assumption that such monochrome camera might be priced up to $200 higher than the regular model, whereas the K-5 IIs was only priced $100 higher than the K-5.

However, I still see no reason why, and no possibility that, the GR IIIm would be 'close to twice the price', i.e. almost $900 more expensive than the GR III.

I therefore stand by my earlier statement:

A monochrome GR III wouldn't be different from what prevailed at the time of the K-5 II / K-5 IIs couple: two very similar cameras, the only difference being the presence / absence of a specific filter in front of the sensor chip: colour filter array in the case of the GR III / GR IIIm and anti-aliasing filter in the case of the K-5 II / K-5 IIs.

The K-5 IIs was only $100 more expensive than the K-5 II at launch.

As far as the Ricoh GR III is concerned it's more than a mere rumour: its firmware is based on Android, whereas the firmware of the previous GRs was not.

I'm not so sure. In the case of Leica (sorry for speaking so much about them, but they are a good source of comparisons as far as monochrome cameras are concerned), the same firmware updates apply to the regular and the monochrome versions. As if the 'monochrome' firmware was identical to the 'Bayer' one, save for some disabled functionalities.

I agree with a hypothetical GR IIIm being priced a bit higher than the regular GR III, because of (i) higher sensor costs due to lower volumes (still under $100 though), (ii) the incremental costs associated with a specific SKU and (iii) Ricoh Imaging seeking higher unit margins from this niche, low-volume product.

However, all the above doesn't justify a doubled price. $100 or $200 more, why not. Twice the price, definitely not.

The RRP of the standard Leica Q2 is $4,995. That of the Leica Q2 Monochrom is $5,995. That's 20% more (which is a lot but we are in Leica land), not 'close to twice the price'.

(Another example: the Leica M10-R and M10 Monochrom share the same RRP: $8,295. However, both being low-volume items, one might consider the economies of scale from sensor purchase and SKU management are minimal.)

The RRP of the standard GR III is $/€899. Can you seriously imagine Ricoh asking $/€1,799 for a hypothetical GR IIIm? or even $/€1,699 or 1,599 for that matter?

Twice the price just for omitting the Bayer array in front of the sensor?

sqr (24² + 36²) = 43.27

21.64 x 2 = 43.28

These lenses are optimised for a 24x36 sensor, not 'barely cover' it.

Indeed, two similar patent requests were published last year:
  1. 2020-086357 on 4 June 2020 (seven examples of a 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SR)

  2. 2020-154288 on 24 September 2020 (seven examples of a 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SR, one example of a 70-300mm f/4-5.6 SR and three examples of a 70-200mm f/2.8 SR)

All three patent requests, including the one which has motivated this thread, have the same person credited as inventor: Tomoya Koga, also credited as co-inventor in the patent request corresponding to the optical formula of the HD Pentax-DA 16-50mm f/2.8 ED PLM AW.

New telephoto lens design patent

  • Example 1: 72.08-291.32mm f/4.6-5.7

  • Example 2: 72.08-291.36 f/4.6-5.8

  • Example 3: 72.08-291.36 f/4.6-5.8

  • Example 4: 68.47-291.36 f/4.6-5.9

  • Example 5: 103.00-388.00 f/4.5-5.8

  • Example 6: 102.81-388.73 f/4.6-5.8

  • Example 7: 72.11-388.00 f/4.1-5.8

  • Example 8: 154.50-582.00 f/5.1-6.4

  • Example 9: 154.50-582.00 f/5.0-6.4

  • Example 10: 154.50-582.00 f/5.1-6.5

  • Example 11: 123.50-592.46 f/4.9-6.5

All of them have an image circle's radius of 21.64mm, all of them include SR.

In short and using 'commercial' focal lengths and apertures:
  • 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6: four examples

  • 70-400mm f/4-5.6: one example

  • 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6: two examples

  • 120-600mm f/5-6.3: one example

  • 150-600mm f/5-6.3: three examples

Theses lenses suffer from heavy focus breathing: at short distance the 70-300s become 70-160s, the 70-400mm becomes a 65-145mm, the 100-400s become 90-175s, the 120-600mm becomes a 120-180mm and the 150-600s become 100-175s.

Image Sync updated

Image Sync V2.1.8 was released on 14 September.

Image Sync / APP / DOWNLOAD / SUPPORT | RICOH IMAGING

This is a bit odd: this update of Image Sync is meant for the GR IIIx, which won't be available until 1st October 2021, and the GR III, provided the latter's firmware is updated to a version that won't be available until early October.

If so, why this update now?

The launch price for the original was €849. MSRP went down to €799 after a few months, before rising and rising (currently: €1,099). In June 2007 I was able to buy it for €699 from a Parisian store.
