55-300 PLM vs 60-250 DA* for plane spotting

You may want to consider the DA* 300mm for distance shots. Although not as flexible as a zoom, it has great sharpness. I use an F* 300mm and also have a DA* 60-250mm. I find the F* 300 focuses faster and adds a bit more reach for moving objects at greater distances. Honestly, if you spend the money on the DA* 60-250, which I like very much, you may be disappointed in the speed of focus for small objects like distant aircraft.

lenses to stay clear of

Check under Lenses on the menu and go to Pentax Lenses Reviews and Third Party Lenses Reviews.

The ratings over the years will help you identify somewhat of a group consensus on better and worse lenses

For whatever lens I might not prefer, there's undoubtedly a forum thread on that lens and numerous great photos taken with it, so I'd advise searching the Forums too. There are a number of stellar lenses. If worried that a given lens is "bad", search for posts to see what others have said. Off the top of my head, I cannot think of a Pentax lens to avoid. I'm surely wrong, but can't think of one.

Is there any time of the year when Yosemite is not choked with people? I'd really love to see it and it's one of those that's attainable. Thanks for the suggestions!

Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales

Canary Islands

Yosemite, Yellowstone, Redwoods, West Coast.

I guess I have three "theme destinations" rather than 3 unique destinations. If I had to squeeze it down, it would be Ireland, Canary Islands, Yosemite.

My friends are very happy with their higher end models from Garmin. They have used Garmin from several years. As a bonus, theirs includes GPS locators along with the recording and gives collision warning alerts, too close alerts, etc. (I don't know what all the alerts are, but in heavy traffic, they beep when someone cuts in front, etc. They are small and unobtrusive. I believe theirs is a model 46 or 56. I think the newest models are like 47 or 57.

I would absolutely recommend you avoid Nexar as they have been nothing but trouble for me. The biggest issue is that they will not begin recording for 3-5 minutes after driving. Repeated calls to customer support finally ended with them just saying, "Yeah, they usually won't record until you've been moving a bit." So, if I'm hit a half mile from my home, there is no record. Which defeats the entire purpose. I find them unreliable and a waste of money.

Older greases tend to dry out over time. The grease collects dirt. It tends to harden or get sticky.
The solution is to re-grease with a modern grease which holds up better. Then you'll be ready for another 40-50 years of usage.

sad news that might benefit some folks Wolfe's Camera in Topeks is closing

I was one of those people for many years. It was my favorite store in the world of any type of store. I bought my first VCR there, then my second and third after the first one was stolen. I had film developed, enlargements made, found all sorts of interesting gadgets for film cameras.... And film cameras, dark room equipment... so much more.

I heard this news a couple days ago from a friend on FB and was truly saddened. The "good point", if there is one I guess, is that the owners are said to be closing because of their desire to retire from the business. If I understand correctly, they owned the building which allowed them to survive turbulent times more than once.

They're an institution, not only in the state, but the midwest. Although the photography market has changed so much, it still is a bitter blow to see this particular store close.

Kenko Pz-AF 1.5x Teleplus SHQ - correct lens mount diagram

The Kenko teleconverter you mention is widely believed to be identical to the Tamron-F 1.4X Pz-AF MC4 teleconverter. So that may be one route to further research.

I'm sorry I don't have a lens diagram. They appear to have few elements I have one of the Kenko Pz-AF 1.5x's, but I'm not tempted to disassemble it, sorry.

The review page doesn't have any clues for the orientation of the elements, but does show that other brands seem to be the same TC.

Also, the official Kenko page for the teleconverter.

Old Canon & Minola User; considering Pentax K-1

We're all waiting to hear more about the Pentax K-3iii and video capabilities, but video has not been the Pentax strong suit. Still, it's supposed to be improved. I agree with the sentiment that, as a pro, you need to know your priorities. Is video the most important? Stills? Gonna really work on your skills and do both? (You'll likely need separate equipment for each, no matter what).

Pentax does not have boring or "pale" lenses. Some of the Limiteds have the most sublime rendering. That's one of the factors which has inspired much Pentax loyalty over the years, imho.

A used Pentax K-1 can be had for around $1000 to $1100 in very good condition. If you don't like it and decide to sell it, you'll get very close to that, unless you shoot 50,000 shots with it or damage it in some way. Lenses, especially Limiteds which hold their value, will add somewhat more. There are still many legacy lenses (all manual) which have wonderful rendering as well.

You could also pick up a used KP (a bit of an outlier as to style, but many love them), K-5iis, or K-3.

You could also dip your toes into the water with renting for a couple weeks. A K-1 with the FA31 Ltd, FA77 Ltd would give you a good taste of the capabilities and "non-boring" lens possibilities available.

Just a few ideas to consider while you're pondering various possibilities. P.S. Lovely images!
Cheers!

Thank you for the great review, Mike! I often wonder how much the temptation must be to have a new product like that in your hands, having tried it and found so much good about it, and then not be able to say anything at all yet. I loved your images as well. The camera sounds very promising. Looking forward to hearing from so many more once it is out in the public realm.

Your video is much appreciated!

Can't ship gear with Lithium-ion batteries from US to Germany

DHL offers guidance on shipping lithium batteries with equipment here.

Generally, small batteries like camera batteries can be shipped inside the equipment. Numerous loose batteries are the most tightly regulated.
There are several reasons I always prefer DHL to UPS for international shipping. It is often more costly, however.

UPS lithium battery shipping guidance (PDF). They say that a battery shipped within the consumer device -- like a camera -- internationally requires labeling and documentation:

If shipping lithium batteries contained in a consumer electronic device, this documentation is not required. If shipping lithium batteries internationally by air, packed with equipment or alone, complete the Lithium Battery Safety Document and Battery Label, as described in this brochure. Place the completed Lithium Battery Safety Document in document pouch or resealable envelope and attach it to the outside of the package. Attach the completed Lithium Battery label directly to the package.

One of my favorite lenses for landscapes and cityscapes is the Pentax DA 12-24mm f4. Recently good used copies have been going for very reasonable prices. That may be due to the popularity of the DA 15mm f4 Limited which falls in that range.

If a lot of your photos fall toward the wider end of your 18-55, you might be interested in the DA 21mm f3.2 Limited. Granted, it isn't f2, but it's an improvement over the 18-55 for that focal length. For the money, it is hard to beat the "Plastic Fantastic" DA 35mm f2.4, which would be more of a normal lens on your APSC sensor cameras.

If you like to stay with zoom lenses, the 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 offers a step up from the 18-55 in both range and quality. It's one of my favorite walk-around lenses. To gain more on the wider end, the DA 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 is a good lens. Both the 18-135 and the 16-85 give you WR.

As said, the 55-300mm gives you a bit of a step up from your Tamron 70-300.

I'd look at where you normally take most of your photos -- what focal length on your zoom lenses -- and then maybe consider options and alternatives for a step up that covers your most preferred range.

I feel an explosion in megapixels coming now

I find the remarks about the need for more and more pixels interesting. I think I've commented before about a friend who does city / urban landscapes, natural landscapes, specific buildings, etc, and uses a Nikon D810 with 36 mp. Occasionally, he wonders about upgrading to a D850. His two or three lenses work for him (no need for a cabinet full) and on rare occasions when a certain lens need comes up, he rents it.

These are prints which are feet in dimensions, not inches. Paper prints, acrylic, metal prints at sizes like 5x8 feet. Buyers for large prints are lined up and the images are all from a 36 mp camera that's around 6 years old.

You need 50 mp for a 24"x36" (50cm x 90cm) print? Even for larger? I'm unconvinced.
Here are a couple I grabbed from his FB page (so, jpgs, facebook 'handled', etc, etc), but the point is that his prints are regularly produced at quite large sizes. And, most importantly for a photographer: sold.

First image is 60 x 96 inches (150 cm x 240 cm)
Second image is 40 x 60 inches (100 cm x 150 cm)

Skyline 135/2.8 m42 lens?

Here's a previous question about a Skyline 135mm lens from 2011 on Pentax Forums. Notice that RioRico, who was knowledgeable about older lenses, feels it may be made by Kiron.

Newbie with some questions on some old lenses - PentaxForums.com

There are a couple of mentions online of someone using one (one comment on a photo.net forum from 2009; one sold 35mm Skyline wide angle from ebay in December 2020), but no further discussion of the lens itself, from what I've found.

I recently received a lens from Japan via DH quite quickly. The seller made a rather large statement about using DHL express for delivery. I hadn't realized until now that there may be any delay issues, but maybe the Japan Post issues are the reason that DHL was touted?

KP price

I was curious what the size comparison was myself, so I went to look. Interesting. Although some pieces of the KP make the dimensions nominally larger, the "main body" seems to be smaller in comparison. I used the K-5iis, because that's one that's in my hand often, so familiar to me.

The K-3ii dimensions are larger than the K-5iis, per this site: Compare camera dimensions side by side
