Project 52 Project 52-10-3: Smoke

This week's project is smoke photography. Smoke is a malleable and exciting object to work with. It looks cryptic, mystical and a bit creepy. Creating abstracts or still life with smoke photography is an easy way to set up a mysterious and enigmatic atmosphere in your image. There are plenty of references on the Internet if you need tips or how-tos. As always be as imaginative/creative as you like when interpreting the theme, creativity is what we're looking for.

Photos for P52-10-2 are to be taken and posted between Sep 24 and Sep 30.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-10 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture or how it represents the weekly theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by non
Pentax cameras are allowed. Cameras may be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot,
Medium Format, etc. But no phones, please.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from thread start date to listed closing date is acceptable.

Long-exposure, time-exposure, or slow-shutter photography involves using a long-duration shutter speed to sharply capture the stationary elements of images while blurring, smearing, or obscuring the moving elements. Long-exposure photography captures one element that conventional photography does not: an extended period of time. How long is long? For this project shutter speeds should be one (1) second or longer.

As always be as imaginative/creative as you like when interpreting the theme, creativity is what we're looking for.

Project 52-10-1 is closed. Thank you all that participated.

Tom, that dragon fly contrasts nicely with the blurred background.
Yaki, that lens has a nice bokeh and compliments your subject well. I do find the bright lower left corner a tad distracting though.
Kristian, the sagebrush really stands out. Those pines made for a real pleasant backdrop.
Rglasel, nicely composed with colorful bokeh ball accents. I'd crop out that leaf at the bottom of the image.
CedrusMacro, you nailed the center focus. That foreground flower (?) does not complement your subject though.
UncleVanya, nice center focus on the flower with good background bokeh.
Noel, those leaves contrast nicely against a most pleasing bokeh background. Well done.

I'll give first place to Noelcmn with honorable mentions to RGlasel and Kristian.

Noel, you get to judge Project 52-10-2.

Again, well done all.

Used this lens this past weekend for the first time in several years.

I was very pleased with the results so much so that I'm wondering why I've not used it more. I will in the future though.

It pairs nicely with my K100D.The focal range would make for a very nice walkaround.

Some end of summer shots using the Tamron 28-105. It mates rather nicely with the K100D.

---------- Post added 09-11-21 at 12:53 PM ----------

Went out with the K100D and Tamron 28-105mm this morning. Had not used this lens in a long time. I was surprised at the bokeh it produced.

Project 52 continues with P52-10-1 beginning tomorrow. For this challenge I'll judge and announce the winner next Thur. The winner will then get to judge and announce the winner of the P52-10-2 challenge. If you have a theme or technique you would like to see in the Project please let me know. I'll try and have themes posted a month or two in advance so you can see what will be coming in the weeks ahead. Thanks, Don

The bokeh effect is produced when the foreground and/or background is intentionally blurred around a subject. Bokeh, meaning "blur" in Japanese, can be achieved by using adjusting a camera's aperture for a shallow depth of field. The bokeh effect is an aesthetic choice and tends to give images a dreamlike appearance.

As always be as imaginative/creative as you like when interpreting the theme, creativity is what we're looking for.

Photos for P52-10-1 are to be taken and posted between Sep 10 and Sep 16.
