I'm in Maryland where there is probably the largest population in the East because of the Chesapeake Bay but I am on the Western side of the state so we don't see them every day. The sightings here have increased over the years but very slowly so it is a unique opportunity to photograph one at such a close distance!

It could make for cold fingers but i was shooting out of the car window, they stock trout in the winter and there always seems to be quite a few of them in the back of this cove where a nice stream comes into the dam so the Eagle is there quite often close to the road.

Is there any fast lens that doesn't produce some fringing when shot wide open in extreme contrast?

Hardest question of them all: What camera to buy?

I would buy the cheapest thing i could get that meets the needs and see where it goes from there. Your buying into an entire system, not just the camera. She may really like it and take to it quickly or she may decide she really is not that interested. If she likes it she will have a chance to see what she really likes in a camera and what she doesn't and if she wants to change systems she won't have a big investment in the first one.

Built in Flash Shadow at Wide to Normal Focal Lengths using K-70

You could pick up a used flash pretty cheap and there is not necessarily a big learning curve, simply use the flash in P-TTL and it works the same as the built in flash. I picked up a used Shanny flash for $30 and it works great.

What do you recommend for AF setting for Portraiture?

Sounds to me like your problem is depth of field and not a focus problem. You stated that the center was in focus which is the focus point you chose but the head and feet were out of focus. Depth of field depends on a number of things like aperture, focal length, and distance from camera to subject. A depth of field calculator might be helpful and can easily be found online.

I found the same flash about a year ago used in excellent+ condition at Adorama for like $35 so I bought it. It works well and does HSS, I got my $35 worth.

Upgrading lens for football

High school football? Can you get near the side lines or will you be some distance from the field? Depth of field will also be an issue with the 150-450 since it gets shallower at longer focal lengths. If your close to the side line I suggest a 70-200 F/2.8, unless your planning on printing large you can always crop a little. I have had some pretty good pics with the DA* 50-135, sure i wish it was a little longer and faster to focus but you can overcome a few minor weaknesses with the right technique.

I have had this happen as well on different cameras under artificial lighting, I believe it is flickering in the lights but it happens so fast that it is not perceived by the human eye. Shoot in RAW and adjust white balance in post.

I'm not so sure the SDM is better than the screw drive other than being quieter? It sometimes hesitates to focus and i don't see any speed advantage over my screw drive lenses. Maybe some input from those who have converted might be helpful here? Great lens though either way.

Shake reduction

You are magnifying everything including camera shake with a telephoto lens. Shake reduction is just that, it does not eliminate camera shake! Get a monopod or tripod to hold the combo still. Everyone is different so you might have to find a shutter speed that works for you. I generally do not go below F/11 on the 55-300 because of diffraction or go above F/7.1 at 300mm since it is better stopped down a little. Check your focus on a tripod also, there could be a slight front/back focus.

A taller tripod can always be made shorter but a shorter tripod can not be made longer. Mine goes up to 72 inches and has been useful for reaching over objects for shots i couldn't get with a shorter tripod.
