Could Ricoh make the camera without compromise? (Ricoh-Patent on PDAF and/or CD AF)

Part of the light that goes to the AF module, that would be complicated. All of it though, it's even simpler than the current double mirror arrangement.
So removing the dedicated AF module, and using the main imaging sensor for AF (and metering, why not?) while keeping the optical viewfinder is simpler. I'm not sure how well it would work in low light though; a stop disadvantage compared to a MILC design?

Too bad it can't be used in parallel with the SD card.
Write RAWs to the larger SD card, JPEGs to the internal memory - and you'd have something if the SD fails. In a camera with a single SD slot.

At least the tiny GR III can write to the SD card at an average rate of over 60MB/sec.

Oh, I'm fine with improvements on video - even if I'm not using it; if I was using it then perhaps I'd be pushing for EVF/hybrid viewfinder.

Right; a hybrid viewfinder is far from the first thing I'd improve on Pentax DSLRs. For me - I don't care at all about video - it's just a gimmick; at best it might prove somewhat useful.
IMO it's only pushed so much because of the EVF hype, rather than a real need.

Performance, including autofocus, is. Better tracking, more AF points covering a larger area, more decisive target lock and sensitive AF-C.

You folks are discussing ways to compromise the camera in order to include something I do not want ;)

There can be no EVF-next-to-OVF; nor sliding mechanism or other such things that would almost double the size of the pentaprism housing.
The solution would have to be much simpler. Perhaps as simple as sticking a display system to the pentaprism.

I don't think looking with one eye through an OVF and with another through an EVF would be comfortable, or practical.

Of course it would. A sliding/locking mechanism, contacts for power and electronic communication, weather sealing - things would be more complex.
It might be feasible in a FF DSLR or high-end APS-C; I'm not saying it can't work.

Cost.
If the viewfinder accessory is too pricey, few would buy it.

Right; we remember the LX and various people thought of applying the interchangeable viewfinder concept to a digital camera - and EVFs.

As always, there are tradeoffs:
- the affordable camera would be more complex than a fixed viewfinder one.
- with the EVF on, it would make a poor mirrorless - larger than necessary.
But actually what makes me unsure about this idea, is that unlike with the LX a DSLR's pentaprism housing contains much more than a viewfinder system - the metering system being most essential (but there are also some ancillary components like the GPS antenna). At least some solutions, like a waist level finders, won't work because of that; and optical viewfinders would have to include each its own metering system.
The LX managed because of its OTF metering.

This being said, I'm not particularly against this; even though I wouldn't buy the EVF.
Two viewfinders on the camera, now that's something I'd definitely avoid.

The thing it would give away was the Xiaomi badge

Sorry, couldn't resist - at the risk of this being posted on rumor sites 5 seconds after I'll click Submit.
Pentax more or less made the modern SLR; it would be nice if they would further evolve the concept - which was stagnant since well before the digital revolution.
