Pentax Left Out Again

Nice bokeh, sharp center, soft corners / borders, according to Photozone Pentax SMC-DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] WR - Review / Lens Test, we already have a lens like this.

It's the Pentax SMC-DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] WR.

I kid, I kid, because I just bought one and love it, despite the harsh review (although I did get a bad copy initially).

Nice pictures.

The tilt shift effect worked best on shot #2 with the bridge from far away.

The effect isn't as dramatic with the other shots and is distracting because of the inconsistent blur on the trees and poles really destroying the effect.

k-5 vs. k5 IIs

I bought the K-5 2 months after it came out for $1400.

I haven't regretted that purchase as it's enabled me to capture 2 years of wonderful memories that I wouldn't have been able to get with my old K-10D.

I would agree that upgrading from a K-5 to K-5iis would not be good value, for me, but well worth it if the upgrade was from something older than a K-5.

What is going on with the dxomark lens reviews??

The DxO lens reviews seems very simplistic. For example the review for the 55-300 is based on 70mm f/4. So they tested it wide open. Looking at Photozone.de, you get more info and you see that the 55-300 sharpens up a bit at f/8. But the results are consistent for the DxO test in that if a lens performs badly, it performs badly for other bodies as well.

Great article that explains some of the problems that Canon had to solve to improve AF.

This is the third part of the series.

Interesting read, especially the part where the motor was holding back AF accuracy.

Autofocus Reality Part 3B: Canon Cameras - Imaging Resource

What do you think are the next steps to improve Pentax's autofocus system?

I shoot RAW so I don't have to worry about using the wrong settings for JPEG. Memory cards and storage is cheap, there's no excuse not to shoot RAW unless you have a computer that's more than 8 years old and makes processing RAW painful.

With the addition of the lens profile / correction in Lightroom, is it still worth using DxO?

Thanks Canada_Rockies for your workflow.

With the latest version of Lightroom and DxO, is there an easier / automated way of getting DxO to do the import for Lightroom?

Thanks

I also recommend Understanding Exposure. What impressed me is that it's very readable with lots of example photos to demonstrate the techniques that are discussed in the book.

I doubt that they have any primes except for the cheaper ones like the 35mm f2.4. But it's worth a look to head down to a local FutureShop.

Cute girls. I have two young girls myself. It's better that they do the heart breaking than having their hearts broken ;-)

I like the photos that I'm getting with the Pentax 18-250 on the K-5.

Especially since there's a lens correction profile in Adobe Lightroom, the results from the lens gets even better. It easily and noticeably corrects the pincushion and barrel distortion at the wide and telephoto ends of the lens so I don't feel bad about using it for landscape shots.

I have the Tamron 90mm f2.8 and I bought it for macro but I like it for portraits. I've often considered the 85mm f1.4.

Just wondering how much difference there is in bokeh between the 2 lenses. Is it worth getting?

I wasn't too excited about the look of the limited with the burgundy lacquer finish.

But, after seeing it in the special box, WOW, my draw dropped.

I'm sold, it looks awesome coming out of the box!

Zoom vs Prime

After getting an FA35 prime, I neglected my 16-45 for a while.

But I'm falling in love with my 16-45mm all over again after wanting to shoot wide angle.

It proven to be very versatile and I don't need extremely small depth of field which is hard to shoot at the lower focal lengths.

Craigslist does give you a warning to only deal locally to avoid scams like this, which is pretty good advice.

I love shooting wide open for street photography. So the faster the better!

Canon vs. Pentax which to buy

Per pixel sharpness, when viewing 1:1, will be higher on a smaller megapixel sensor even though there's more resolution and detail to be found on the higher resolution sensor due to the pixel size getting smaller and smaller as resolution goes up.

That's what I found when I compare my 6MP Fuji F11 to my K10D to my K-5.

I agree that a 6MP sensor is all you need for an 8 x 10. I've even had great results printing out my 4MP images at 16 x 20 for framing on a wall.
