Being busy tonight and I know everyone is going to have some nice close up shots, I thought I'd throw the camera in the back yard and let it do a time lapse while I went back inside

lens for moon photography

Sounds like the sigma I've got, never got a good shot of the moon with it. But it pushed me to work out what I needed, was it the lens, was I doing something wrong etc (in my case all above).

From my experiences, 300mm is good, you wouldn't want to go any lower. I've used 2x TC a few times only to dump the images because the IQ was no where near as good as the 300mm without the TC cropped.

Other factors to take into account is the weather and moon position, wait till its directly over head (less atmosphere to shoot through).

A few examples

Pentax K3 with a Pentax-A* 645 300mm shot free hand (This shot surprised me because of Saturn) 100% Crop

Thanks for the comments, I hadn't really thought about it before, just didn't realise what I could get out of the 300mm

This was taken on a hunch, shooting freehand with the 300mm (it was either a planet or a UFO :) ). Truth be told I didn't know I could get that sort of detail of saturn with a 300mm.

Minutes later Saturn moved behind the dark side of the moon.

I'd 2nd that. When I know I don't want to carry around my kit, before I got the Q, I'd just use the mobile, now I grab the Q.

But then would you have gotten a brilliant series of shots like you did? (When I have the Q I'm a little lazier in my shooting then when with the DSLR, that might just be me :) )

Nice, really like first one, the colours really pop out.

A little off topic, have you thought of swapping the globes in the in the flog lights with LED globes? I've toyed with the idea of replacing the head lights with the same ones you have and the turning lights with a white LED globe (on an LTD so only turning lights not fog lights).

I'd say close, weather conditions and the moons hight in the sky were roughly the same. Should you upgrade, I will say I only upgraded from the K5 due to circumstance I had to give the K5 back. I had no plan to upgrade until then as I loved the K5. Photos I can't share because of IP rules, the K5 has taken many shoots in the marine environment, covered in the red dust of the construction sites up in the North West of Australia and never missed a beat and always got great results.

But in the last couple of weeks with the K3, I'd say go for it and I'm glad I was sort of forced into it, what I thought was great with the K5, the K3 beats.

Of coarse if you wanted a short answer, yes go get a K3, its worth it. :)

Thanks, fully agree.
