When my GF and I go away I usually lump her with a normal (35mm Macro or 40mm Limited) and I hit up the 21mm or 77mm.

That way we never miss a thing between us and you get different perspectives of everything.

DA 40 + *istD is uber tiny, much like a KX + DA40 I assume.

I prefer primes as it makes me think about composure a bit more than a zoom. When I have a zoom my shots are a bit boring I think.

Don't say things like that.

No encouragement to get a 35mm and keep the 105mm.

So does it go 1:1 at the end of the hood, or earlier than that and you get a bit of free magnification bang for buck?

Here's mine, sunset in Noumea. Had to wait for the sun to go right down, and then some, before I could shoot wide open.

Mmmm, creamy sunset bokeh.

We just returned from a trip to New Caledonia. I didn't want to be lugging big, bulky lenses around so I left the fatties at home and packed the DA 21, A50 1.2, FA 77mm and a short extension tube along with my K200D.

After reflecting I popped the DA 16-50 in the bag, in case I needed to go wide, or go wet.

My girlfriend was sporting the old *istD and a DA 40mm. She's not a mad photog but she does have a keen eye, so her project was a one lens only - old school.

After day 1 and some lackluster photos I packed the 16-50 away never to be seen again. Zooms tend to make me sloppy. Bracketing different length shots in the hope of nabbing a good one, or simply using the zoom to crop with no real consideration of composition. I actually think I lack the skill and experience to use zooms to their full potential and fall back to what I can work with - primes.

Anyway, we used the 77mm on the tube a few times and the results were pleasing. My girlfriend is a bit of a macro enthusiast to I relented a couple of times and let her have the macro setup.

Now I do have a macro lens, a 105mm Sigma. This thing is a bit big and impractical to haul around, especially overseas, walking everywhere or on boats or whatever.

My girlfriend did great work with the 40mm (and a polariser) but wanted more from the 40cm min focus.

I mentioned that there was a 35mm macro. The lens would be almost identical to the feel of shooting with the 40mm, however she could go right down to 1:1 without any mucking around.

She was intrigued.

She offered, for the first time ever since buying me the K200D as a Christmas present, to kick in some money to fund a lens purchase.

I was intrigued.

Now I rarely use the 105mm. When I do, it's usually just for ebay shots or some other utilitarian purpose. I had no problem with the idea of selling it to get a 35mm macro.

However I remembered back to trying one in a store. The minimum focus distance was short, very short if I recall.

My only concern is that going 1:1 on the 35mm will leave the lens far too close to the subject possibly even causing issues with shadows.

So my question comes, finally...

If you have one, do you find the short min focus range restrictive? Issues with light? Scaring off "subjects"?

Cheers

Clancy

Also, some pics of the trip (click info if you want exif) please ignore the hip thrusting.

Just a quick query... Can a lens ever be *too* sharp?

Here's a shot @ F5.6 with my 77 Limited on the K200D and it's so sharp it almost hurts my brain. Subjects look photoshopped in.

If you're unconvinced by the small JPG, here's a link to the full size and of course the RAW is sharper again.

Got that In a Camerahouse in Sydney that stocks Pentax too.

"Are you sure it's 77mm?"

"Yes"

"Are you sure it's not discontinued?"

"Quite Sure"

"I guess I can call our distributor"

(on phone) "Really? You have them in stock? Is this a new line? How many years?"

(off phone) "Yeah we can get you one for (crazy price)"

"Yeah, I'll think about it, how about a 31mm?"

77 Limited.

It's a magical lens. My girlfriend loves it because it makes everything look good.

My instructions for using a 77 Limited follow.

1. Wide Open
2. Point
3. Shoot

It makes everything look good.

Its bokeh is juicy and delicious. When I got my K200D all I wanted was this lens. I saved and saved but everytime I got close, something else came up for a bargain price. I ended up with a DA* 16-50, a Sigma 105 Macro and a Sigma 70-200.

One fateful day I got my 77 Limited. It was black, not silver like I hoped but it was magical.

The day it arrived there were rainbows

Here's some creamy delicious bokeh from yesterday at the dogpark

and finally, here's a fullsize pic demonstrating sharpness wide open, as well as DOF at wide open and minimum focus.

Save your pennies, buy a 77. You will not regret it.

Cheap digital cameras, SLR cameras, video cameras - Canon, Sony, Nikon, Olympus, JVC :: Digidirect Australia

I always saw them show up on shopbot and thought they were some dodgy online retailer, but I actually walked past their store in Sydney yesterday.

They had 3 K7s and heaps of lenses boxed up and ready to go.

Pretty sure it's Aus Stock, but worth checking.

Your PC isn't fast enough to play the high bitrate MJPEG.

Recompress and try again.

As much as I hate the program, Quicktime Pro does an excellent job of converting the video to h.264

This is my offsider's youtube channel - all the newer stuff there is shot with his new K7.

YouTube - NuZiNo's Channel

He's just starting out so there's a bit of junk - excuse the McMillan.

Also, all these were shot with a very cheap and slow card, so he was butting up against the buffer after about 1 min of video.

He picked up a Sandisk Ultra II 32GB last night and now he can record a full 9:36 at 720p all stars.

So expect some longer vids soon.

Again, my apologies for the content, but you can see a K7 used for less artistic more "fun" handycam type shoots.

The flip side to this is that on the day I was shooting, there were heaps of pros with huge white lenses and fullframe setups.

These guys tend to shoot wider and crop down. Shooting wide lets you catch a fast moving target without having to worry as much about framing.

With their 21 Megapixies, I bet they cropped down to a picture the size of mine (or bigger) and got good results on pretty much every shot. I on the other hand had a lot of trouble with fast moving objects that almost fill the whole frame and trying to be steady while hand holding a big, heavy, long lens with no SR on.

So really cropping owned my efforts in this case.

For me personally, all things being equal, I will get better shots with the TC than without. It's all about what works for you and what compromise you're willing to make.
