How do you ~safely~ store your D-LI90 batteries ?

If you have access to a 3d printer, theres a cap design on thingiverse that you can print. It fits quite snugly on my one spare battery.

Theres also one for the D-Li109, but I havent tried that one.

3D Printing Lens Hoods!

Unfortunately not. My integrated 3D scanner was a bust, and being a glutton for punishment, I bought into another crowdsourced campaign - this time for a dedicated 3D scanner which was a good 1.5 years in the making. They finally shipped it and I've never even set it up - for lack of reasonable Android support. So, no, I haven't been able to pursue this. The biggest constraint is just getting the dimensions and tolerances locked in. Someone with access to an amazing 3D scanner and/or strong CAD-fu needs to advise on this.

Probably a AF issue. Were you shooting in AF-S or AF-C? What happens if you switch to MF and shoot without focus lock confirmation?

Suggestion Weight of lenses

I got a weight of 3090g including the strap, hood, and 112mm filter. It's possible that the catalog weight erroneously subtracted the weight of the hood, so I will update it.

03 Lens: Focus lock helper

Hi,
Would you mind sharing the 3D model for local printing?
I have never done 3D printing or designing, but have seen many printable Pentax Q adapters and accessories at Thingverse and other similar sites.
This accessory of yours is the first I really would like to have.
There is a 3D printer in our public library. It is operated by the staff, so I'd only need to take there a 3D file in a USB stick to get it printed.
I'd be happy to make a donation to your PayPal account, of course.

03 Lens: Focus lock helper

Is it just me or is the focus ring overly sensitive and prone to be moved every time you look at the camera? I have done various versions of tape to maintain focus but that is tacky. (I liked the blue painters tape best though. Easy to remove and no residue.) I have a solution if anyone is interested.

I designed a ring with a small tab that fits into the focus ring knurl. While it is not "continuous" focus, it jumps between notches, there is enough DOF to cover a fraction of a click. I've been using this for 6 months with no problems. I do have 2 pieces of double stick tape holding the ring in place. I love it, it looks cool and much easier to live with than tape is. The ring was modeled in SolidWorks and printed on an Objet printer with a 24 micron resolution. You could not print this with a common FDM Makerbot type printer. ( I have access to various 3D printers and have those too, so I know their capabilities and I've been 3D printing for 11+ years.)

What do you think?

Changing battery on O-RC1

My old remote was dying in cold weather. I had a spare which, so I attempted to change the battery. Easy enough. Now have almost, as new, version.

Undo screws on the back and prize open the case. The circuit board was screwed in place with two, out of 4, tiny screws. The battery was also glued in. Prized the battery out (CR 2025). To get new battery secured without glue I wrapped a small length of electrical tape around it. Reversed the process.

The most fiddly bit is getting the seal back in place. In the end, I chucked it away. I was getting a spare remote for the cost of a button cell, and anyway the case screws down nice and tightly, so unlikely to have much serious problem with moisture I'm guessing.

All's working fine - all for the cost of a button cell I had knocking around anyway and 15 minutes of fiddling.

Battery cross compatibility - Pentax D-LI90 and Panasonic BLF19
Posted By shootfreeordiehard

I might be flying close to the sun here, but I notice that the Panasonic BLF19 (BLF19PP) and the D-LI90 ( like for the K-5 ) are essentially the same battery!

The contacts are the same +,T,-, except the Panasonic one gets a 4th contact marked (D).
The Pentax FACTORY D-LI90 has that 4th contact blocked off!

Both are 7.2V and 1860 mAh and it worked good in my factory battery grip of my K-5 (OG).

However, the charger locking slots found on the bottom/sides are different, and thus the batteries require different charging docks UNLESS you extend out the panasonic locking slot.
In the side pictures, the panasonic is the one that is on the left, and you can see the slots are significantly shorter.

You could also use the panasonic charger if you grind down the second locking nub ( the one furthest from the electrical contacts ) on the charger.
However I haven't modified either of my batteries or charger, so I can't say for certain yet.

Which filters for Pentax-FA* 300mm f2.8 ?

As others have mentioned, not using a rear drop in filter will affect focus slightly but that is correctable. I recently tested my A*400 f2.8 and my K-3II to 100 test shots with/ without a rear/ front (145mm UV) filter. Did not see any aberration with 2,1 or no filters but it may be an issue with full frame or larger as the last time I used a full frame with my lens was in 2003 with a K2DMD and I did not ever take the rear drop in filter out back then except to clean the dust off of it.

LBA is complete: FA* 250-600mm/5.6 – images of the lens

I am thinking my FA* LBA is complete... maybe...

Received the super telephoto zoom lens last Friday, but Ive been quite busy these last few days! The stars finally aligned and I have purchased the same lens you see in our own PF lens review database. I had the honor of meeting up with the owner (Jay) of this lens in October, 2008 for a shooting session. A sincere thank you to Jay (aka Sirfishalot) for letting me spend some time with this lens last fall and come to the realization that its in a class of its own! Thank you again for packing it so well and shipping it to me...

Its brilliant yet sharp wide open from 250mm through 600mm and really sharp stopped down just a bit. This is a larger lens at close to 13 pounds, but its literally as new! I already have a Wimberley MK Gimbal that I will test drive to confirm its place in my support system arsenal, alongside my Arca-Swiss Z1 head that I normally use in a blind. Ill be getting either the Gitzo 5541LS or Gitzo 3541XLS as the tripod of choice.

Here's a teaser shot of lens in the trunk... ;) This shot was taken at F/7.1... to intentionally hide the lettering on the metal badge on the trunk...:D

Here's the badge detail on the trunk:

I opened the trunk and I see a nicely padded interior, cutouts and of course the beautiful curved silver surfaces of the FA* 250-600/5.6:

I pulled out the lens and removed the lens hood (aka hood bonnet):

Closer details of the lens barrel:

For some reason I like this one a great deal - a little tighter and it's almost like a product shot:

Here's the scale test - from left to right: trunk and accessories, Wimberley lens plate (P-50, which I already had), FA* 80-200/2.8, FA* 200/4 Macro, FA* 300/2.8 and FA* 250-600/5.6.

That little black lens in front of the FA* 200/4 Macro is the DA 50-200...

Last image for now - this is much better at showing the physical size of each lens:

I hope you enjoyed them!

Regards,
Marc

The MD-S (K1 prototype) killed it. The FF 6mp camera costed a fortune to develop (20 000 000 dollars to be exact). In order to get some of the money back, they engineered the MZ-S from it. This meant that the pro MZ-1 was shelved. There was no market for two expensive Pentax SLR's. The Pentax engineers were generally pissed off by this, and most of them though that the DSLR was madness. Both the MD-S and the MZ-1 were very close to production.

Here's a National Geographic photographer - Jason Edwards. I had a bit of trouble digging up the website, since I couldn't initially remember his last name... Jason is directly represented by National Geographic. Any commercial assignments and stock sales inquiries are referred by his website to contact National Geographic HQ in Washington, DC.

I think his images speak for themselves....

Bio: TEMPO rhythms of life - Photography by Jason Edwards

Jason Edwards is an award-winning photographer with the National Geographic Society and is represented by the National Geographic Image Collection.

Jason has photographed in more than two-dozen countries and is highly regarded for his wildlife and remote landscape photography. Widely published, his work has appeared in National Geographic Magazine, Australian Geographic, BBC Wildlife Magazine, Aqua Geographia, and Nature Australia. He has also authored and photographed two children’s books.

With a reputation for self-reliance and an ability to adapt Jason’s assignments have taken him to some of the most remote and inhospitable areas on the planet. It is his love of less developed regions, and his ability to depict even well known subjects in a unique manner that has separated his images from the mainstream.

In 2004 Jason was awarded the inaugural 'Pursuit of Excellence' Award by the Australian Geographic Society, "for his extreme efforts and absolute commitment to obtaining rare and amazing photographs.”

Thanks again Mr. Money for the link

I found the info about CPL there:
** The rear FA* CPL for the FA* 300/2.8, FA* 600/4 and FA* 250/600/5.6:

Amazon.co.jpF PENTAX ~ΌtB^[ FA~ (P[Xt) 35184: ƓdEJ

At the time of this writing (2011.07), they are still in stock.

The price shown is :
30,635.00 JPY =329.009 CAD

but wow ! That's pretty expensive for a filter !

And all the site is in Japanese characters... and I can't login with my regular amazon credentials...

I'll pass on this one, but will check fleabay or here for a better opportunity...

Thanks a lot for the tip. Here some information in return:

Amazon.co.jp does not ship outside Japan. However, tenso.com is a service, which ships Japanese products abroad ( Forwarding service connecting overseas customers and Japanese online stores [ Tenso.com ] ). You have to register, then you get a Japanese address, which you can use for your purchase. The product will be forwarded to your home address. Shipping costs and a small service fee have to be paid to tenso.com. In my case, the whole transaction took about two weeks.

Here in Germany, one has to add 6.7% for customs and another 19% on top of that for taxes.

Only: A* 645 600/5.6 + F* 600/4 (all other A, A*, F*, M* lenses: not)

I am switching to a lighter and smaller Canon 500mm. Anybody interested; I can send images of the lens (look at my picture with this lens) and what it does. The lens is used, no doubt, but in a perfect working condition. The glass is excellent and it offers a very decisive AF with my K10D. Prefer to meet the buyer in my area so he can touch, smell and play with the lens to make 100% sure it is what he wants. The "toy" is too expensive for me to send and wonder, and too expensive for the potential buyer not to take test images and see it in person. Location: Harrisburg, PA area. I also have other Pentax items to sell.
