Item for Sale
Pentax K20D Body

Asking Price
$750.00

Item Description
So I'm selling a Pentax K20D. I've had it for less than half a year and it's been great to me. No problem with focus or hot pixels or flash exposure or anything like that. Just time for me to try something else.

Original purchase date: June 4, 2008

Number of actuations: ~10000 (latest file is IMGP9968)

It's got everything it came with. Box, packaging, documentation, CD, cable, original battery, caps, hot shoe cover, strap. Also comes with my proof of purchase. The camera itself has never been abused, never needed repair, and has generally been awesome and looks awesome.

The box has had the UPC taken out.

I will try to add some more pictures later.

Anyone NOT pleased w/K20D ergonomics, BUT bought it do to potential??

The A700 does have excellent ergonomics... probably my favorite. But the K20D is close, and hey, I like the K20D more overall.

Are you trying them powered up? More than just holding them in your hands, try doing certain things on the camera. Change from single shot to motor drive, change the focus point, change the exposure mode, change the focus mode, the WB, the exposure bracketing... etc. I know for me on the A700, Ive always liked how quick and responsive it is with choosing focusing points, but on the K20D, it's much faster and easier to change the focus mode. The A700 has a dedicated ISO button, but I actually slightly prefer holding down the OK button and using the front dial to change ISO quickly with the K20D. Both of them are rather quick for me when it comes to manipulating flash, but just very, very different from each other... etc. etc. etc.

Always fun, searching for the camera body that's right for you!

Most guys have touched on the stuff... I'd just like to add that the battery is great because it's a pretty common battery, and lots of people make them and sell them for cheap. While the Pentax battery is 50 bucks, I personally have had no problem with a $15 Ultralast. Also helps that my minolta 7D batteries from back in the day are a perfect fit as well. :) I use a battery grip and have gotten 1500 pictures in a day before I had to swap in another battery.

Pentax *istD what is the correct memory card?

So since the *ist D is a CF camera, I'm guessing you're trying to use an SD to CF adapter? Maybe the SD to CF adapter doesn't support SDHC cards?

My advice: use a real CF card.

I've got a 16-50 and I love it.

I also had the luxury of going into a local shop that I trust and trying out both the one they had in display and one of the boxed ones. Both seemed to be good to me, went with the boxed one, took a couple thousand pics the weekend after... still happy over here.

Though it must be said that even with a good copy, the Sigma is tempting because of the near macro... but hey, that's what I've got the 24mm 1.8 for. :D

What's the answer to this...??

There really isn't a way to avoid it. This lens is exceptionally bad when it comes to lens flare... which is so sad because it's exceptionally good in every other regard. Yeah... a more aggressive lens hood does help a little bit more (yay digital sensor sizes), as does some careful holding of the left hand in front of the lens, but I don't really see any way to reduce it when you have the light source right there in the picture. If you think that's bad, you should try shooting some neon signs. It can get CRAZY weird and colorful.

Pentax k20d High ISO Photo Gallery

These aren't quite as action packed, but I know in my first full day with the K20D, I'm very happy with the quality of these high iso shots. All taken in jpeg ***, full res pics uploaded to flickr as is.

I think this must be the first cat picture I'm really happy with... (I've never really been into the taking pictures of pets thing...)

Both of these were ISO 3200 with the DA* 50-135mm.

K20D - still no release priority setting?

Sorry to have set this off.

Having already used the *ist D and the K10D, I kind of knew what I was getting into... but there are a few little things (some might call them quirks, some might call them bugs) that I just needed to relearn and rethink about. Heh, relearning how to do wireless flash on Pentax after doing it on Sonolta has been fun, and little things like the focus rings are in the opposite direction now...

Ah well, no better way to relearn all this then by doing a fun Memorial Day weekend full of shooting...

K20D - still no release priority setting?

I guess that's something... though I've personally gotten in the habit of moving the active AF point around as I'm engaging AF. Here's hoping I can break some of my Minolta habits.

Since it's got quick shift focus anyways, it would be nice if the AF button on the back wasn't a manual focus button but instead something that toggled release priority. That'd be brilliant. If I'm shooting something I need to take quickly, where I just need the image to capture, period, I could grab the camera and use my thumb on the AF button and be certain the camera will take a shot. Man, if I could hack the firmware... oh man...

K20D - still no release priority setting?

I used to have a K10D and one of the really bothersome things about it was AFS was always focus priority. Which was rather annoying for low-light shooting. Yeah, I know AFC has release priority, but I want the focus to just lock in and stay. And I want it to take a picture when I tell it. I know about using the AF button on the back to cancel the AF so that I can actually fire the shutter, but really, losing about half a second for that is somewhat frustrating.

So yeah... still can't configure release priority in AFS mode?

CameraLabs K20d review

I personally think it's silly to say image quality is everything. It's always a balance of stuff. If the camera gets in the way of getting you to take a picture, then even the best image quality in the world can't save you when you miss the opportunity.

Not that I'm saying that's what happens with the K20D. At least, I hope not, since I should be getting mine this week. I rather like how the original K10D handled...

That does look like a bum lens. Also not quite sure what you can do about, since it is definitely on the old side. Last I checked, Sigma couldn't service my 24/2.8 (bought new in the early 90s)...

Ah well. That turned me into a super happy 24/1.8 owner. That's a very fine lens, that...

That's a market segment I wish was still around: the upscale prime P&S. Stuff like the Nikon 35ti or 28ti, or the Yashica T4, or the Ricoh GR1, or the Konica Hexar, etc... Fine, FINE cameras. Fine tools.

I'm looking forward to the DP1, but I have to say I have trepidations on the output of its sensor (I've not been enamored with DP9 or DP14 shots). Also, the lens being F4 really turns me off. All those things that I mention above have faster lenses. The T4 is the slowest of the bunch with an f3.5, the Konica Hexar has an F2 lens.

Why no HSM lenses?

It's all about market share. If Pentax has enough, then Sigma will do it.

Minolta has had a few SSM lenses for years now. Sigma hasn't bothered to do an HSM Minolta lens largely because the numbers in the Minolta camp just don't compare to Canikon.

Sigma actually used to use the K-mount in their film SLRs.
