Saw the Pentax K-50 being sold at Target

I was at a Target in Seattle, WA and happened to walk by the camera aisle in the electronics dept when I spotted several K-50s for sale. It was the kit with the 18-55 DAL WR lens and I think it was being sold for $550. That was the first time I have seen a Pentax DSLR being sold in a major brick and mortar retail establishment in years. Let's hope this trend continues.

Follow-up to the MX-1?

I see, so simply asking if anybody has heard of a replacement warrants a crotchety response like that? I never said anything along the lines of "Ricoh should have an MX-1 replacement announced by now" but I think it would be interesting to see what their level of commitment to this segment (enthusiast compacts) is and whether the MX-1 was a one-off or they build on what was already a great camera.

The grip on the K-30 is slightly better, IMO. The K-50 is still comfortable, especially since the grip is thicker but the grip is a little deeper on the on the K-30 and that feels a little better in my hands. But they are both better than competing Canon and Nikon models.

Mine was delivered today. Image quality seems nearly identical to the K-30. However, I think the autofocus in low light is faster on the K-50 vs. the K-30. I also think the LCD is a little better than the K-30's despite having the same resolution. I really like the new DA-L WR lenses...lightweight but still with decent build quality. The overall body design to me resembles the K-r. A very solid sub-$1,000 DSLR overall.

CNET Review of the K-50/K-500

My guess is that she's approaching the camera from the point of view of someone who is not interested in working with the settings in order to get the best photos out of it and who just wants to shoot JPEG only and not process RAW.

Pentax K-50 Review - Digital cameras - CNET Reviews

What do you think of this review? She did not review the K-30 but she did review the K-01 and gave it rave reviews for image quality. Maybe Pentax stumbled on the JPEG processing on this model? The sample images look good to me.

Amazon marketing MX-1 as waterproof

I noticed Amazon is saying that the MX-1 is waterproof. I already contacted them to try and get them to correct the description but so far nothing has been done. I wonder how many people bought the camera from them thinking it was waterproof only to find out that it's not. I think they did that with another enthusiast compact recently and pissed a lot of people off marketing it as waterproof (wanna say it was the Oly XZ-1). Hopefully the people who buy and then find out it doesn't work after dunking it in water will at least get their money back.

MX-1 Field Test Video

I got this camera yesterday and I have to say I'm a little disappointed. The build quality is not that great despite the brass on the top and bottom. It feels sort of hollow and cheap compared to others in this price class (the Canon G15, for example). I thought the camera was also awkward to hold and to shoot with...I didn't like the thumb rest on the back and it just doesn't feel very stable to hold. I also noticed a lot of detail smearing even at ISO400....moreso than others in this class of camera.

However, the exposure is pretty good. I thought the menu was laid out nicely and the autofocus performance is very good, even in low light. The color reproduction is accurate, if a little muted. It's not a terrible camera, but I wanted to try this before committing completely to the Canon G15 and I think I'll stick with the Canon as my compact of choice. It has an overexposing problem, but it has better controls, ergonomics, color reproduction, built quality, noise performance, battery life...the list goes on.

My .02 is that folks should wait to see if Pentax cuts the price before committing to this camera.

K-30 vs. the Nikon D3200

It doesn't seem right to compare actual shooting experience of one camera to the spec sheet of another. I would not underestimate the D3200. Its IQ is no improvement over its predecessor but it's a powerful little DSLR. I do think the IQ of the K-30 will be better, but whether it provides an overall better shooting experience remains to be seen. This discussion sort of reminds me when the D7000 and 60d came out 2 years ago. Everybody looked at the spec-sheet and declared Nikon the clear winner with its D7000 in the mid-range DSLR category. But when the rubber met the road, there were some key areas that the 60d excelled over the D7000. It wasn't a better camera overall, but, there wasn't as clear of an advantage as everybody assumed it would be. Moral of the story: Let's wait until people get the K-30 in their hands to find out if it's as good as Pentax promises it will be.

Question about the battery adaptor - K-30

Thanks... I am upgrading from the K-r to the K-30 so I was hoping Pentax wouldn't play dirty pool and make you buy an entirely new one just for the K-30.

Pentax K-30 firm release date?

Photokina is the big trade show in September. I would bet there are probably 2 or 3 camera announcements to coincide with photokina and probably some lens announcements as well. Hopefully with the K-30 they won't have the same issues that Olympus has with the OM-D in terms of wait times. I doubt that will happen though. As far as the direction of the company... if they were to focus more on the weather-proofed cameras and lenses... that would be a smart move. The last piece of the puzzle is making sure those great weather-proofed cameras are in more retail stores.

As Pentaxian, if you were to jump ship, Nikon, Canon, Sony, or?

I like all modern cameras. I don't think there's such a thing as a "bad" camera out nowadays... they're all really good. I like Pentax because, as I see it, they understand they reason why you buy a camera is to, first and foremost, take pictures. And they generally revolve most of their interesting features and perks around still shooting. The two big boys are putting all their energy into the video side of the house and not really doing much to inspire still shooters. I also say the other two cannot touch Pentax in terms of affordable weather-sealed cameras and lenses. Try finding anything that compares to the Pentax 18-135WR at a $500 from the other guys. Outside of Pentax... the other company that I think is doing a lot for still-shooters is Sony. Sony still has to work on tweaking their noise reduction settings a little and de-clutter their menus, but from a still shooters perspective... I enjoy shooting with a Sony almost as much as I do a Pentax.

A new Pentax DSLR slotted below the K-30?

I'm sure others have mentioned this before... but as excited as I got when I saw the K-30... the other thing that came to mind was "this can't be their new entry-level DSLR". I don't know if anybody has heard anything... but I would be real surprised if Pentax didn't release something slotted below the K-30 which forgoes the weather-sealing and other features. Maybe the K-01 would fit that bill? I mean, the K-r has sort of fallen into that slot by default now (of course it has been discontinued since this past Winter but is still widely available).

Speaking of the K-01... I tend to wonder if Pentax is going to end its run prematurely and replace it with another mirrorless camera. It doesn't seem like its selling well (despite the fact that its a very good camera) and the reception hasn't been that great. I personally have never used or held one... so I am not in a position to judge whether its as frustrating of a camera to use as some people say it is.

It would really be something if they were able to undercut Fuji's price by a significant amount with a mirrorless K-mount camera with almost the same degree of specification.

Pentax on a budget

I agree. Though I think the other folks are right that the kit lens combo is perfectly fine for the K-x. The 18-250 is a good choice as well. I mentioned the 18-135 because it's widely available and optically a good fit. But the DA 17-70 is a good choice too if you don't want to go the kit lens route.

I guess you could put it under the latter. It's a constructive discussion about what's the nicest DSLR/lens combo you could put together under a limited budget.

It has been my observation that while the 18-135 is just okay on the K-5... it actually is an excellent performer when attached to the K-x or K-r. You're right, WR is beside the point on the K-x or K-r, but in all other respects I think it's a nice, versatile step up lens from the kit zooms.

If someone came to you and said they were interested in the Pentax system but only had $1,000 to spend on both camera and lenses. What would you advise them to get?

My advice would be:

Pentax K-x/K-r body
DA WR 18-135 lens
DA 35mm AL lens
