Unless it overcast or golden hour you are not going to pull out colours from the background, can still be good in B+W though. Soft box with 1/4CTO gel to fill to the background light intensity works well for me for a simple mobile set up. Iím no expert though.

Considering you have the primes if you need the speed, surely the 16-85 would have to be a contender if landscape performance with weather sealing is paramount?

Next focus on taking photos of your kids when they are interacting or doing things. Kids running around are generally not going to produce wonderful images. Having good high ISO performance so you can get photos in low light or to stop down further is going to more valuable than having advanced AF tracking. The main negative with Pentax is their video capability, but DSLR suck at video anyway. Mirrorless with an electronic viewfinder is the way to go there. Unfortunately they are not that affordable. Have a good budget for lenses. All cameras a quite capable, its the glass that make most of the difference.

The 16-50 is definitely an underrated lens, but reliability is its biggest weakness. CA is practiacally a non issue with PP, and the lens only needs to be sharp (enough) in the centre wide open and across the frame stoped down to F8. It has great colour and OOF rendering, and in a AW package and starting at 16mm it offers a lot more than the other two options if sharpness is not your primary consideration.
Of course i fully agree that it could be improved, and who knows maybe there might be some element tweaks as well.

HD DA 21mm Ltd Lens Not Sharp Enough, or Just My Focusing Error?

Donít be afraid to use f11 on the 21, peak sharpness may be at F8 but F11 is still sharper than apertures larger than F5.6.
Its especially good for hyperfocal focusing, just adjust the F11 hyperfocal mark to the infinity distance and everything is in focus from 1m.

You cant compare 100% crops between a 16mp and 24mp sensor as the crop of the 24mp will be of a smaller area and reveal any weakness in the lenses your using. The other thing is that you need more sharpening as the detail from the 24mp is finer than the 16mp when viewed at full size. All the lines are smaller and give you the impression of less sharpness, even though there is more detail.

It has a ring type ultrasonic motor on it so it should be faster and more precise.
The other thing to do is use back button AF so the camera doesnít try to reconfirm focus every time you take a photo. It also means you can focus and recompose easy, which is require when using fast apertures as only the centre 3 points are rated to F2.8 and colour sensitive vs F5.6 for the rest. Just use the centre point and forget about the rest for fast aperture/low light work.

More Limited lenses

Iím not saying the limiteds are competing optically with modern F1.4 lenses, instead they should be viewed as a premium F1.8 product and judged accordingly. Updated slightly to control CA/PF better, DC/PLM and a WR with quick shift body and you still have a set of great lightweight lenses that beat anything out there at F1.8. (Except 43) Good Bokeh is much more valuable in a fast lens than corner sharpness wide open.

I disagree. The 31 and 77 are still strong (apart from CA) by todays standard. They are sharp wide open, unlike the 43. Their corner performance is still very good, and combined with beautiful rendering in a small sexy package they would continue to serve as great lenses with minimal optimisation.

The 43 on the over hand should be viewed as a pancake lense where size has been traded for IQ. It still has its place, although photographers do need something better optically, and they are getting it with the DFA*50.

Well between Ricoh announcing a f4 zoom (with presumably more to come) and licenseing designs like the 50 to Tokina (and potentially getting new designs in return) I would say their future looks a lot more rosy than a few weeks ago!
A agree that pentax will be aiming for both sharpness and rendering, with their awesome coatings still allowing for 3D pop even in complex designs. The DFA*70-200 showed it can be done.
