:D

Yes, the difference is not visible a compressed image. Did you download my full res samples? If you're okay with that IQ loss, then indeed, it's not worth spending $2000+ for the zoom. Otherwise... What are you waiting for :D ??
As a side note, before I purchased the 150-450 I thought that, like you, I didn't need the ability to unzoom. The DFA has changed my mind since then, especially since I starting to shoot more mammals than birds. A deer is pretty often too close even at 300.

Thanks for the tip, I may give it a try with the electronic shutter. But to do so you need to disable the burst, that's not always an option. I would have been mad to miss the 1st photo of my previous post because I disabled burst shoot in order to test ES to very slightly improve the boring 2nd shot

Sharpness wise, I've spent a lot of time comparing the 2, and despite being nitpicky, I'm unable to tell which lens took which shot, even when looking at 100% on a 4K monitor. The 300 may be overall very slightly sharper, but not always, and never by a noticeable margin. Yet the 150-450 is much more versatile. I'll never try to sell the 300 as I love it, but I never used it since I bought the 150-450.

Now it looks like it's bokeh o' clock :) :

I'm satisfied with it.

Yes, that's I think the same IQ I get. I'd say it's good, but not great. It's I think much better to spend 4000€/$ for the K1 + 150-450 than 3500€/$ for K1 + DA*300 + TC.

Exactly. An f/8 lens is useless in many situations. f/5.6 is already regularly limiting, I'm glad the 150-450 is f/4.5 until 270 mm.

+1, people who wanted and could afford the 150-450 have likely already bought it anyway. Seeing the latest patents, it seems like they are at least thinking of doing their own rather than a rebadge (if we're very lucky, they'll do both, but I doubt it).

Well I have the K3 (first of the name), 150-450 and DA x1.4. The quality I get with this setup is I think similar to the picture you posted, but I'm unable to evaluate the IQ on a 900*720 picture. My results were not, in my opinion, worth a 2500€ lens, so I after a few weeks of trying it and being disappointed, I removed the TC and never used it again. Same on my DA* 300. The IQ loss is extremely close than when cropping, but when cropping you do not slow down your AF, you still have a F/5.6 lens, you don't carry the (small) extra weight, and you spare 400$ (well in my case I didn't since I didn't succeed to sell it, but you get the point ^^).

I uploaded 4 full res samples here, comparing 2 shots taken using the K5 + DA* 300 + TC vs 2 shots taken using the K3 + 150-450. I selected shots very representative of the IQ I get with both combos. To compensate the sensor resolution advantage of the 150-450 (mounted on the K3) I selected shots where the lightning conditions were unfavorable for the zoom (I don't think I've ever used the TC on the K3, nor the 150-450 on the K5).

I think the comparisons are fair, yet in both cases the 150-450 is way ahead the 300 + TC. And the 300 being very slightly sharper, and much faster (f/4 vs 5.6), than the 150-450, comparing the 150-450 vs itself + the TC is much worse (I didn't find a shot using this combo in my photos, I don't think I ever kept a single one).

If you are happy with the results you get, all good. I wasn't with my TC. Maybe your copy is better than mine. Anyway I've now switched to the K1, so the TC is no longer an option. If Pentax releases a FF TC, I don't think I'll be in the game unless I can rent it for long enough. But I don't expect to be happy with an f/8 lens anyway.

In this case, there's not much more to do than what you did ;)
I added in the zip above a photo taken ages ago using my K10d + Sigma 70-300. Both your KP and 55-300 are much better, so that's at least the IQ you can get without spending a penny, just by getting close enough.

+1. There's no long f/2.8 lens in the current lineup that would, maybe, be well suited for TC use, and the current TC is not usable on the K1s.

This (being too far and cropping) is where lies the IQ loss, and even a K1 + 150-450 would not do much better at this distance.

But if you're happy with this result, it's much better to stay at this distance rather than getting closer and spook them, as you did.

And if you want to improve the result, building a hide, getting a good book and be patient is the way to go before considering upgrading the gear ;) . To shoot a bird of the size of a sparrow with a 300mm on an APSC body, you need to be at ~3m of it to get the best IQ. That's a distance most birds do not accept (in Europe, at least) if you're not it a hide.

Pentax Meeting on Nov 27: Q&A about future products (nothing very specific)

I'm pleased to learn that new lenses can arrive anytime :) . But I'm a bit confused by the news about the bodies strategy, if there's one

With FF lenses they chose the high end, expensive path several years ago and stuck to it, so option #1 seemed the only viable one. Among the DFAs, if I'm not wrong the 28-105 is the only one available for less than ~1200-1500/$. Having a high end FF body, at least like the K1, seems the only logical choice.

The APSC lineup on the other hand has many "bang for the buck" lenses, and it seemed to me that many Pentaxians were so especially for this. There are high end options options as well, but if they had to choose to keep only one body for APSC, staying in the 700-1000 (K5, K3) price range would have seem wiser to me.

But now the bodies strategy seems to only keep the high end APSC, but an entry level FF. I don't get it: there would be only high end FF lenses with entry level FF body, and low, medium and high end APSC lenses with only a high end APSC body.

Looking at the things under this perspective, we could think that the FF line is to be dropped, but the latest releases were... Nearly only high end, FF lenses (to my greatest pleasure :) ).

Looks like they like to cultivate their mysterious side

Talkin' bout a resolution... Having switched to a 4K monitor a while ago, I won't go back to 24 mpx, and I'd appreciate a bump to 50-60 instead (despite the file size). 4K monitors are now affordable, and 6K/8K are already there. 24 mpx seems like a thing of the past to me, and is the only thing that made me not buy the K3-iii (viewing a 24mpx photo on a 6K monitor, you can't crop at all...). It was high end ~ten years ago, but things have changed a bit :) . I know that lower files size allow for higher frame rates, but the competition is tough and already manages to provide both. Since the release rate is something like one body every 5 years for each system, going for a ~ten years ago resolution doesn't very compelling to me.

Sorry, I don't get your point? I never said anything against the 55-300, it's a great lens as well. If it suits your needs, all good, but if it doesn't suits the needs of others, they have the right. Just like they have the right to wish for lens X or Y having no alternative, to avoid having to switch to another system.

That's an APS-C only, f/8, poor IQ, high vignetting and slow focusing lens. Pretty far from even the worst/cheapest 150-600 available, while both much heavier and much more expensive...

Likely because "way too many" people would buy one, just look how Tamron & Sigma's 150-600 sell like hotcakes. But while I indeed see a lot of people asking for telephotos lenses, not so many are asking for cheap ones, nor for zooms.

Why is it so hard for you to understand that people may want lenses that do not interest you, especially when the lens in question is a best seller of other brands, with no alternative in the current lineup? I don't want a cheap telephoto either, but I'd see it as a welcome addition. Many people do wildlife only occasionally, not having this option is a real shame. We should all hope for Pentax to make them rather than advising every people who'd like lens X or Y to switch brand... There are still a few gaps to fill in the lineup, the cheap telephoto is one of them, among an ultra-wide (ideally with good coma performance for astrophoto) and a fast telephoto. Mostly all the rest is covered, often with several choices.

As for the downsides:
- you're comparing apples to oranges, there's a world between the IQ of a $400 body + Tamron 150-600 and a K3-III + a 150-600 equivalent. If you want an equivalent IQ you'll need to buy something like a Nikon D500. Pretty far from half the K3-III's cost...
- you'll either need to cary an additional body, or switch system altogether. First option is not practical at all, second option is super expensive. Selling Pentax gear is close to impossible (at least here in France), so switching system means rebuying everything (in my case, that's at least 8k€). No longer that cheap, right?
- many of us do not want to go mirrorless. Buying a reflex body in another brand than Pentax isn't very wise, there will be no successor. Mirrorless options are not cheap, at least for now.

The IQ of the 150-450 is much, much better than DA* 300 + DA 1.4, and you get a bit more reach. On the downside it's heavier and a bit more expensive, but totally worth it ;)

Thanks for the report, glad to see that they found a way to add astrotracer without the need of the GPS 👍 !!

For the 6 variants, the astro version is very interesting, looks like they pay attention to astro these days 🙂 . But if they want to be "the" astro brand there's a bit of work on the lenses as the Samyang 14 f/2.4 & 24 f/1.8 are not available in Pentax mount. I just bought the Laowa 12, coma looks ok at f/4 or more, it's not bad but not good either (and the flare resistance is awful...). The Samyang 14 f/2.8 is likely better for astro but its distortion made me choose the Laowa.

I have yet to see a report on the 21 ltd's coma performances, but I don't think it was design with this in mind.

Interesting!

1: I already have (and love) the DA* 300, so I'm not interested
2: too close to the 150-450, I hope they won't do this one instead of the others, I don't get the point 🤔 . A cheaper/lighter version I guess, but I think it's much more important to fill gaps rather than offering a bazillion options for the same focal length (as they did with the ~50mm 😤 )
3: It would likely sell like hot cakes looking at Sigma/Tamron versions. I may be tempted but f/6.3 is pretty slow 😕
4: Now we talk 😅 . Looking at the 250-600 size, starting at 125 might be ambitious though! That would likely be a ~10000 lens as well, if so it has to deliver 🙂

Glad to see some discussion about long lenses 🙂 . I'd love to see some options which have no alternatives (rather than another 100ish-400ish a bit different than the 150-450). I'd definitely purchase a 500 f/4 or 600 f/5.6 (after some savings time, of course... 😅)!

They released the K1, one of the best landscapes body available, with no modern landscape lens (and that's still true today as we're still waiting for the 21).
Now they release one of the best wildlife body, and they remove their longest lens...
Go figure 🤷 ...
Luckily the 150-450 is a gem, but it's sometimes a bit short, and I find the IQ loss when adding the TC way to high. I'd love a 500 f4 or 600 f5.6 prime, but I don't see it happening 😕

Not my experience either: mine is wide open comparable to the DA* 300 (a very little bit softer, but you can't notice that without zooming at 100%), and it is much better than DA* 300 + 1.4 converter (which I thus never use).

Like what others have said, your copy has likely a problem, and probably need at least AF adjustments (but that's hard on a zoom), or a repair.

Thanks! I don't have the 560 to compare, but vcollerp on Flickr has photo albums of both lenses (he also has the F* 600 f/4): vcollerp?s albums | Flickr .
Like for the DA* 300 vs D-FA 150-450, I don't think we can differentiate the IQ between these lenses without pixel peeping at 100%. The difference is more in the size, AF, zoom or not, reach, weight, max aperture and price.

That's a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), common in France. The bee-eaters on the second shot are much less common, but they easily accept a hide. Then you "just" need to be in the hide before the males arrive to the colony (females sleep in the nests, the males a bit further), and leave after they left it. I shot the kingfisher of the 1st shot at the same spot.

I never used another system enough to make AF comparisons, but it certainly suits my needs. It's a bit better than the DA* 300, and light years ahead of the Sigma 70-300 APO I started with. Which was by far my worst lens by the way. This is not suitable for BIF... And the AF was so noisy that to get a chance to take a shot I needed to switch to MF, do a manual pre-focus, switch back to AF (no quick-shift...) and then focus. All that while by being my softest lens at the same time! After using that thing every AF system seems amazing  .

If you're after BIF shots, I'd wait the first tests of the K3 III before purchasing a new body, as it has a completely new AF and brings birds tracking ;)

Glad to help :) ! For the body, I'd wait the K3 III release: compared to the K1 you'd get better AF, lower noise at high ISO settings, 3 times the burst, and 1.5 times the reach. The only downside is the lower resolution, and worse field of view.

I nearly never use manual focus, only to take identification shots of animals in the darkness at crazy ISO settings ^^

I have some with the K3, but not with the K5 (I bought the K3 before the 150-450, and stopped using the K5). I'm on my phone right now and for whatever reason the photos of my post are not loading, just the text. Aren't there some small birds portraits in the photos listed under the "K3 + 150-450" line?
Anyway, you didn't tell us what you intend to shoot with that lens? Close ups of what?
I also have the 1.4 converter, I prefer not to use it (I find that you loose too much sharpness, and prefer to do my best to get closer to the subject). IIRC using it with the 150-450 on the K1 is not a good idea (to much vignetting).

It's not clear if you're asking help to give some mercy to your wallet, or to convince yourself / your wife?

If the former, stop scrolling, close this window, and never come back. You've been warned

K1 + 150-450:

Now, the lens isn't taking the pictures, we do. A K10D / K7 / K5 / K3 / KP + 55-300 or DA* 300 f/4 gives very similar results than K1 + 150-450 if you don't zoom into the picture.

K3 + 150-450:

Here are older pictures of only 800px (back then internet speeds were not wat they are today). I just give you the links as Pentax Forum would upscale them, making them pixelated. Opening them in a new window should show them at the right size.

K5 + DA* 300 f/4:

http://timphoto.free.fr/_ressources/_photos/_grandes/193_Renard_roux.jpg

K10D + DA* 300 f/4 (even on my 27" 4K monitor, this is plain sharp. You can't zoom into the picture a lot of course, as 4K is 3840*2160 = 8.3 mpx, which is nearly the 10 mpx of the K10D):

http://timphoto.free.fr/_ressources/_photos/_grandes/210_Gorgebleue_a_miroir.jpg
http://timphoto.free.fr/_ressources/_photos/_grandes/207_Gorgebleue_a_miroir.jpg
http://timphoto.free.fr/_ressources/_photos/_grandes/203_Cordulie_bronzee.jpg

To sum up, the 150-450 is an amazing lens. So amazing that I never used my DA* 300 since I bought it, and the DA* is absolutely fantastic as well. But if today you don't take pictures similar to the above with a K-whatever + 55-300 PLM or DA* 300, the 150-450 won't change anything, nor will a K1, or any lens / body. If you are beginning, I recommend you to start with a 55-300 instead (or the DA* 300 if you're not on a budget).

Finally, the monitor on which you process and select your photos does imho a huge part of the job. I currently use a Dell U2720Q (4K 27"), previously an iMac (QHD 27"), and previously a 13" MacBook (1280x800 IIRC). Going from the MacBook to the iMac was at least as much a leap forward than going from APS-C to full frame. It didn't make me take better pictures of course, but enabled me choosing the sharp ones. QHD -> 4K is another big step (but requires good / young eyes).

If you want some full res JPEGs or DNGs, I can send you some.

Hope this helped ;)

We'll see, they may have a nice card to play here. ML has great advantages but big drawbacks as well. After using an Olympus ML a colleague wants to go back to an optical VF. Pentax now seems to be the go-to choice. He came at me asking about the KP. I lent him my K3 & K5 with some lenses, he's now on the watch for a KP. Despite my warnings about the fact that (while making money) Pentax is now a very small company, in a very small market.

Pentax has now addressed 2 major complains one could make: lack of a modern wide angle lens and lack of human/bird/eye tracking AF-C. That leaves a rectilinear FF UWA (~11-12 mm) and long lenses to cover nearly everyone needs :) . Pretty impressive for such a small team. If I was a troll I'd say that it's nearly embarrassing for the big guys. But I'm not a troll. I didn't say anything.
