I consider a rebrand to be lenses made by tamron for pentax brand, even if pentax puts the propriety lens coating on then ships it back.
A licensed product would be Pentax/Ricoh purchasing the optical formula and manufacturing it from scratch themselves.
For cost convenience they may also be sourcing parts from tamron or their suppliers.

The key difference is where the profits flow to and who has control of the manufacturing process and timeline.

My 43ltd is my favourite lens and its clearly a cut above some other very good lenses i have, although I dont own and 31 or 77. There are some tricks though.

1/ Calibrate at you working distance. I made the mistake of calibrating the 43 at close distances and it wasn’t happy.

2/ Only use the centre AF points. The centre af points are F2.8 (and colour sensitive) while the outer point are F5.6. Use the field curvature to your advantage, it helps you to focus and recompose as the focal distance remains constant as you rotate the camera.

3/Use between f2.8 and f5.6 where the incredible centre sharpness and microcontrast produce a superb 3D effect better than any other lens. The Key for 3D effect is to use a small enough aperture to get the whole subject completely in focus with the background/surrounds slightly out of focus, ie a photojounalistic approach.

4/Don’t photograph dinosaurs if you want to sleep at night!

Well they have that patent for variable transparency mirror coating, so I'm going to guess we will finally see the ovf/evf switchable hybrid.

dp review had both a de-centred lens on the k1 and had used a default ACR profile for the d810 that applied sharpening. Imaging resource has comparisons for the K1 that don't show any problem.

There are a million 43ltd and da*55 photos though which are not in the 50 club. Strangely enough people tend to shoot with their favourite lenses, and their favorite lenses are also often their best lenses. The fa 50 and da 50 are nobody's favorite if they have pockets deep enough to afford limiteds of star lenses.

I'm assuming their waiting on a new aps c sensor from Sony's new 150mp MF wafer. No point releasing a k3 replacement with the same old sensor.

DA*11-18/2.8 delay to 2019

Its also possible that the full price of the DFA*50 would have been $1500 if the sharing arrangement with tokina wasn’t done. Its clear the lenses share the same parts such as motor, aperture, glass blanks and maybe even the front housing. Ricoh most likely gets some/most of these things made by specialist 3rd party manufacturers and would get a better price for bigger volumes. Tooling for such small batch productions is such a big cost that I would even think pentax would potentially do the grinding and polishing before shipping the elements to Tokina for coating and assembly. I doubt Ricoh would be doing the optical assembly based on how slow production is, although if the Tokina comes out priced higher than the pentax after the demand has been filled then they just may well be doing that. There was some idle speculation that Ricoh had invested in Tokina a one point.

People forget that Canon and Nikon do not have a trinity of pro quality APS-C zooms and instead try to jawbone their consumers into upgrading to FF. Getting the 11-18, 16-50 with new optics and 50-135 with new motor to the market for the release of the K3 replacement would be quite high on Ricoh’s priority list. If they can get the IQ of the 11-18 and new 16-50 to the same level as their top flight * lenses then they will have an extremely competive APS-C pro system.

The whole delay was caused by slow throughput due to the high precision requirements and QC. Doubling the size of the production line and no of staff assembling the lenses is a huge cost that can be avoided just by taking their time. Overcapacity is a killer in manufacturing.

The pentax 15-30 and 24-70 clearly have different coatings than the tamrons. The reflective tint is green like other pentax lenses vs yellow of the tamron. A direct comparison was made on an adapted sony that show a marked improvement in flare resistance HD24-70mmWR-006 | Robert Mitchell | Flickr

The upgrade cycle is dead as the technology has matured. We haven’t seen a new aps-c sensor since the K3 came out, presumably why its replacement has been put on the back burner. The key for manufacturing is to match capacity to output. Pentax has already cut cost by outsourcing, stoped trying to compete for entry level consumers with the huge cost involved in suppling dying B&M stores, and has instead gone after informed customers who value all the features pentax brings (which compared to canon and Nikon is a lot) Why would a Pentax user leave if he looses performance by doing so. Hence why releasing products such as the DFA*50 which are “Best in class” is the perfect strategy moving forwards. It retains customers because they loose out if they leave.

The 16-85 would be the no 1 landscape zoom in the pentax line up. 16mm is a huge difference to 18mm. Its perfect as a one lens solution for hiking and travel. All the limiteds are fantastic as well if your willing to compromise flexibility. Every one has its own brand of magic and they are a joy to use. The 55-300 PLM is the way to go for an affordable Tele due primarily to its fast and silent AF.
