CCD vs CMOS Sensors - Which do you prefer for "Colors"?

I have a 10MP Pentax K10D digital camera with a CCD sensor. I also own some newer Pentax cameras with CMOS sensors.

To my eye, I see a subtle difference in the way CCD cameras render color as compared to the way CMOS cameras render color.

I know, that the sensor itself is not the difference maker, rather the CFA that sits on top of the sensor itself. So, let's not get into a technical discussion on that.

For those of you who shoot both CCD and CMOS cameras, do you too detect a difference in color? If so, how would you describe this difference, and which do you prefer CCD or CMOS colors?

The advisory commercials, TV spots, posters and cards do little.

I've observed in my area (Wisconsin, USA) that there is very little adherence to social distancing, limiting the size of groups, non-essential business closure, or any of the other preventative measures that our governor has ordered and enacted into law.

There must be vigorous enforcement of these controls. Without penalties for violations, the number of deaths will continue to grow unchecked.

I'm all for martial law - enforcement at the point of a bayonet. That's the only thing that the masses of undisciplined young Americans will heed.

In a town near where I live, they had the first case of confirmed virus announced today. It was a 20-year old who returned from a spring break trip to the beaches of Florida. God only knows how many others in his community that he infected after returning home. Florida refused to clear their beaches during spring break these last few weeks, knowing full well that thousands of young adults would likely be exposed to this new virus.

With a November election coming up in the USA, I believe that most USA politicians are loath to take too strong a position on clamping down on unacceptable behavior for fear of loosing precious votes.

This is not a "political" post, as I'm lambasting all politicians in both parties here in the USA.

Sony A350 digital camera with 14mp CCD sensor.

I really like the 10mp sensor in my Pentax K10D, and intend to do a shootout between my K10D images and my A350 images.

Here's my latest Ebay flop. I'll bet that you've never heard of this one before.

I purchased a digital camera from a Japanese seller. He didn't mention in his ebay description that the camera menu was all in Japanese.

When I received the camera and found that the menu was in Japanese (which I don't read), I thought, OK, I'll just change the language in the menu to English. No such option with this camera.

I contacted the seller, who agreed to give me a partial refund of about 40% of the value of the camera. I decided to take the refund and keep the camera.

All's well that ends well. I spent an afternoon with an English version of the operating manual and "Google Translate". I will only be shooting RAW files and manual focus lenses, so many of the menu settings were not of concern to me. I was able to set up the camera to shoot RAW files, and it works great. I just hope that nothing happens in the field where I need to change a menu setting.

I'm not wishing for a new Pentax full frame, because the K-1 does everything that I need "for still photos".

Want better video? Get another camera brand that shoots in 4K.

A couple of days ago, Nikon announced that it's closing its' repair facilities world-wide because of the virus.

I don't know how Precision Camera is coping with the virus, but at the very least, if they are not closed I expect their repair capacity is greatly diminished for many reasons that I don't have time to review now.

Given the above, I am very glad that I currently own two Pentax K-1 bodies (and that I know how to do some rudimentary camera repairs). Should one of my K-1's go down, and repair not be available, I've got the second body that I can use if I'm unable to self-repair the defective unit.

On the APS-C front, I've got a K10D and 2 other similar CCD APS-C bodies (Sony A350, Fuji S3-Pro) and a few modern Fuji X APS-C bodies too, so I don't worry about backup with my APS-C bodies.

Do you have a back up body?

What will you do if your main body fails and you don't have a backup?

Is it time for you to think about buying a backup body?

OK, we've all heard a lot about "your experience" in this thread. To your eye, Pentax lenses trump Zeiss lenses. This, you admit, is based on small jpg images you've seen on the Internet that were shot by other photographers.

Can I take a moment to share my experience? It happens to be the direct opposite of yours. I've owned all but one (15mm) of the Zeiss Classic lenses, and four of the Milvus lenses. I've Leitax adapted and tested more Zeiss ZF lenses to K mount than anyone not named David Llado in Spain. Also, I've owned just about all of the better Pentax lenses (with only two or three exceptions). Overall, to my eye, the Zeiss lenses are better in overall rendering and sharpness - in fact, I currently own only one Pentax lens (a large telephoto) and most of my main lenses are Zeiss.

Overall, Zeiss lenses cost more than Pentax lenses and are of newer designs. Newer and more expensive lenses are expected to be better than older and cheaper lenses, right?

I went grocery shopping tonight. It was a surreal experience. People looked scared and unhappy. The Zombie apocalipse has begun.
Plenty of empty shelves. They were out of some of the stuff we buy. No restocking of shelves being done.
No skim milk. No brocolli or cauliflour. No powdered milk. Very few loaves of bread left. Etc.
Is it like this in your area?

As the virus continues to worsen, I would not be surprised to see the Postal Service, UPS, and Fed Ex modify how they deliver (or possibly even stop delivering all together).

What do you think will be the likely changes in our delivery systems? How will it affect you as a photographer?

I'm glad that I'm pretty set right now with my current photo gear. If anything, I have a glut of excess gear that I'm concerned I might not be able to sell because of unavailability of shipping. And please don't suggest Craig's List, because that involves face-to-face interactions with sometimes "nasty hombres".

Alex, thanks for posting that information! I was thinking basically of affordable cameras. The NEW old stock Sony A350 I bought was $170, while a nice used Pentax 645D body would cost 10 times that.

The A350 has a large for its' time 2.7" LCD. When it's switched to LCD screen, a cover drops over the optical viewfinder to stop stray light from entering. Also there is a dedicated button above the right thumb that allows instant magnification of the live view image. So for a guy like me who exclusively focuses using live view, the Sony A350 is a dream come true.

Of course the Pentax K10D doesn't have Live View, at least not function live view that I'd ever use for focusing.

The Pentax K10D has 10.2MP APS-C CCD sensor. I just purchased a 14MP CCD sensor Sony A350 camera and a couple of A mount lenses (unfortunately there is no K to A adapter available that focuses at infinity).

As far as I know, the 14MP CCD sensor that is in the Sony A350 is the most MP of any CCD sensor produced for a digital camera.

I'll be sure to post some comparative photos between these two excellent CCD cameras. From what I've seen on the Internet, the colors/rendering of both cameras are very similar, just the Sony has more resolution (and a tilty LCD screen and live view). They both have IBIS though.

I have a 90mm Leica lens (I thinks it's an APO) that (with some custom adapting on the lens mount) I hope to use on both bodies in this test. Should be interesting...

Some of the notable billionaires have been saying for years that most of the earth's problems are due to overpopulation.

Well, this new virus just might be an answer to this concern. First, it kills off most of us old geezers. Second, the youngsters stop making new population for fear of getting the virus.;):D

Thanks,

Just got back from a two week vacation in sunny Arizona, USA. The only camera I took was my K10D. Below are a few photos I took with it.

10MP is not too little resolution for me because I use Topaz Gigapixel for up-sizing when needed.

I am finding that I prefer the colors that I'm getting out of the K10D's CCD sensor over the colors that I get out of my Pentax K-1, K-5, or K-3 CMOS sensors.

On my Arizona trip I only took one lens - an adapted Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 AIS lens. In the near future I'll be testing some of my adapted Leica lenses on the K10D. I suspect the K10D and Leica lenses will be a "marriage made in color heaven".
