Hi all
Did someone not start a petition somewhere to Profoto to produce a HSS for the Pentax? I thought someone had posted it a while back but I can't find it.

Otherwise I will start one myself.

Thanks

I tested out the LR plug in, not any different in speed than the DNA one. I have all three but still through it all prefer IT2.
Here are some test speeds from back in August when IT2 was released.
Tethering
Pentax 645z
1) writing DNGs sequentially to slot 1 then slot 2 (Memory Card Option 1)
using Image Transmitter v2.1.0
48 seconds to shoot and transfer 12 DNGs to watched folder in LR

using DNA plugin for LR
48 seconds to shoot and transfer 12 DNGs to watched folder in LR

2) writing DNGs to slot 1 and 1980px jpgs to slot 2 (Memory Card Option 3)
using Image Transmitter v2.1.0
over 2 minutes to shoot 12 DNGs & jpgs and transfer jpgs to watched folder in LR

using DNA plugin for LR
56 seconds to shoot 12 DNGs & jpgs and transfer jpgs to watched folder in LR

3) NOT writing any images to card, only transferring DNGs
using Image Transmitter v2.1.0
40 seconds to shoot and transfer 12 DNGs to watched folder in LR

using DNA plugin for LR
no option to not write to cards and only to laptop

For the past week I've been shooting between the DNA plugin and IT v1.0.
For the most part IT hadn't done well and I would then switch to DNA. I was waiting for files to transfer and a few times with both apps, I would lose files in the transfer, I was writing to SD cards as well so they were backed up there.
Today after some discussions with Pentax and my local dealer, I was made aware of IT v2.1.0. I've been playing with it here, ran some tests and it seems much more robust and the connectivity is much better.
For me IT2 has more saving options as well as camera control, that along with the speed increase, I see no reason to purchase DNA.
I wish I was aware of IT v2.1.0 last week before I bought the DNA plugin.
From the brief speed tests above, it doesn't seem like a SD card speed issue or with either app, it has to do with the speed of the internal processor.

Great news except that it ONLY write to your computer through Lightroom, there is nothing written to the SD card.
The DNA plugin and IT2 will write to both.
They almost got it right. . . . .

I ran into this issue a while back and NO, there is no way to do it in manual mode.
Sucks.
I can't/don't want to use AV or any other auto mode.
Other manufacturers have got this right, come on Pentax its your turn to write some new firmware.

Hi dShelly
As far as the overweight/porky/underpowered B1's are concerned, I have heard from my contacts at Profoto that they have reveres engineered most camera TTL firmware for other brands besides Canon/Nikon. They are sitting in a holding pattern waiting for licensing to be approved.

Well
I have some good news and some bad news for anyone thinking of modding adapter cables to use Profoto heads on Priorate M Pack units.
Good news is, yes, you could probably have cables made by any competent repair shop and they will work.
Bad news is that they probably won't work in High Speed mode. Priolite uses their LEDs to create a "long" flash duration, starting before the shutter opens and ending after the shutter closes. That in combination with the regular flash tube creates a seemingly short flash duration based directly on your shutter speed. Think of it as an intense HMI burning beside your flash tube while you shoot. No doubt it works with their heads, unfortunately Profoto heads don't have the same capabilities.

I'm looking into it. Trying to get all the voltages right and if you can still obtain HSS even without LED's to prime.
We'll see. . . . . . .

Priolite: Sync Speeds Up To 1/8000s With Pentax - Third-Party Announcements | PentaxForums.com
This is great, seriously thinking about getting a couple of M1000 packs and a few pig tail adapter cables to Profoto. Just need to check the voltage and it might be a great solution.

Thanks everyone. I was looking for more real world experiences and examples. I'll need to rethink how I'm going to approach my current project instead. Might go back to 4x5 to get the look I'm going for, that won't be very spontaneous :(
I'll ask for a loan of the 90mm as well as see how it does.
Thanks again.

645Z and D FA 55mm and CA

I have been plagued since the beginning, July 18, 2014, over the amount of CA on the 55mm w/o on the 645z body. The main reason for getting the 55mm was to use it wide open.
I've just picked up my replacement body and lens and before leaving the store I tested all combinations. No matter which lens on whose body, I was always ending up with strong green and magenta CA at 2.8.
I can obviously fix all that in ACR/LR but not if the model is wearing a garment of the same colour.
It has proved a mild PITA for a number of advertising projects.
I also tested the 45-85 at 55mm wide open at 4.5 and granted it only 4.5 but this lens is a good 20 years old, nothing; clean with no CA what so ever.
I would expect a new modern lens, even from a smaller manufacturer to be CA free for the most part.
Pentax has been exceptional in trying to help me. My body and lens are on there way to France or somewhere to be checked over but I'm sure they will come back and tell me everything is well within tolerances.

Has anyone else seen this CA, wide open on their 55mm?

Thanks
Rob

I feel the camera is very well rounded for a first attempt at the CMOS market.
If you read my first mini review, you'll know some of my gripes already.
The biggest thing, by far, is the AF zone. It just isn't large enough.
I could live with the slow processing of images, the lag time between images to adjust ss or aperture, the poor SD slot position on the camera(under the strap mount).
Faster lenses wouldn't hurt either.

The FluCard is a joke.
For wireless I have a Mobi card, the fastest they make and it works very well.
I just tried to get Image Transmitter`(DNG) and the Mobi (jpgs) to work at the same time. The Mobi doesn't want to stay connected to the iPad now.
So it looks like it is either use a wifi card or use Image Transmitter but not both

I can give it a try next time I'm in the studio.

Oh and by the way, there is no serial number either.
That might be why no one can get a copy right now, they are probably recalling all the cd's and re writing them so you have to install with a serial number.

The manufacturer has gone bankrupt. Pentax is looking for a new supplier but as of yet, hasn't found one.
So any 25mm lenses out there are all that's left in the world at the moment.
If you want one, probably best get it soon.

Just to let you know, the 25mm has been put on hold.
The manufacturer who makes one of the prime elements in the lens is no more.
All thats left in stock right now, is all that will available for the fore seeable future.

Meeting with a Pentax rep re. 645z issues

My meeting went well.
Its a new camera, launched by a company that is relatively new to this field (MFD), with evolving firmware and hardware.
Going back to my problems, point by point.

1. Chromatic aberrations on the lenses, I can accept some of the older ones but the brand new 55mm is one of the worst offenders
They will look more closely at my files and let me know. They suspect it might be the lens (not sure how he guessed at it, but okay).

2. AF is near useless. Can I be the only one who finds the sensor zone too small and the AF system/controls way over complicated. It is also not accurate enough to be usable.
Their reply, "look at the other MFD's AF systems". Ya, this is better but why compare yourself to them. Just give me 8-12 good AF points spread out across the frame. I don't need 27 points all jumbled in the centre.
We agree to disagree and come to the conclusion that LV using focus peaking is the best focus solution.

3. Why is there a wait time between firing the shutter and the ability to change the ss or aperture?
Hmmmmm, we'll look in that (while writing it in his little Ricoh notebook).

4. Tethering option
See my new thread Image Transmitter 2 preview

5. Auto gain on LiveView. You can't over ride the exposure in LV so you can focus on contrasty subjects.
It took a while for him to grasp the seriousness of this but after a few different lighting scenarios he agreed there is a problem there. I told him to look at Canon and Nikon for LV systems that work.

All in all it was a success I feel.
If I have any professional issues with the camera, I can contact him and he will make sure I'm not without a system while mine is in for service.

:)
