Was it worth it ?

I shot a wedding last weekend. Short answer: The K-1 didn't need a flash. I put the radiopopper on the K5, well, because it's a K5.

So ya, I can't see shooting without a K-1 indoors or at dusk. It would be silly and crazy-making.

Some of the shots were at ISO 12800, a whack at 6400; import into LR and it's obvious which shots were K-1 and which were K5.

Secondary bonus: Since it was non-flash, WB didn't argue, and I didn't have to gel flashes.

If you are a pro shooter it would be irresponsible to not shoot with the K-1. If I were shooting full time I'd buy two more (one as 2nd lens, one backup in the car). As it was I had the K20D in the car - so glad it stayed there.

I missed that... what an amazing thing to say back then! I don't think I got my first iPhone until late in 2007, might have been 2008. And the camera was crap, although fun. So it wasn't like there were apps or anything like that driving it. Funny for him to say.

I recently posted here (and to Flickr) two images, one shot with the K5 + 16-45mm and the K-1 + 24mm downsized to something like 1024pix wide. There is almost no difference in the two shots.

Except there is.

1) The 16-45 shot has some bad smudging in the corners.
2) I can crop waaaaaaaaaaay in on the 36mp shot. Can't do the same on the 16mp shot.

So in one sense the shots are the same.

In another they are worlds apart.

But on a phone screen they are the same... Maybe print bigger?

I was going to buy a Hoodman so to see if I liked the idea I built one for $1 using a square magnifier from the Dollar Store. I liked it so much I still use it if I'm going to be outdoors and shooting thin DoF or video.

But with the focus peaking on the K-1 I'm not sure it would be needed. Maybe a simple shade...

Scratch that. Focus peaking isn't shown when recording ... I guess. I just tried it. :hmm:

Thanks! That answers a lot of questions. But basically it looks like a pleasing setup. Where it's sharp it's sharp, and the bokeh, especially the bright OOF spots, are even and without bright edges. I think we found a winner!

People still shoot in jpeg? What is this, 1992?

(full disclosure, I just bought a Polaroid SX-70 on Saturday to keep the K-1 company. It could be argued the SX-70 shoots only in 'analog jpeg' - no negatives!)

FF vs APS-C Mini-showdown: K-1 50mm vs K-5 30mm

I'm just happy the test showed these things, math aside:

1. Nearly identical shots are possible between formats when the comparison is realistic, the settings simple, and the results useful. I have a 50 f/1.2 but I chose the f/1.4 lens at it was AF and more typical for most users. Comparing the 30mm at 1.4 to the 50mm at 1.2 would be like bringing a knife to lightsaber fight (or is that the other way round?). But the point is that the K-1 isn't a magical unicorn, and even at close quarters and wide apertures both formats produce great results.

2. Outside of comparable settings, pretty much any FF + 50mm f/1.2, f/1.4, f/1.7, or maybe f/1.8 (I haven't tried my other ones yet) can out-DoF the 30mm at f/1.4 on APS-C. So if you have a Sears 55 f/1.8 or an FA 50mm f/1.7 know that it already will blow a 30mm on APS-C away. But that's a bit contrived, since if you have both systems you can just mount the 50mm on the APS-C, step back a bit, and worry less about the width of good background (as compared to using the 30mm).

I think the math is comforting from a 'this should work' perspective, but as I found out some comparison shots don't work, since the minimum focus distances of the lenses aren't the same. I didn't present those as cases where one system was better than another because that's not how shooting in the real world works... no one ever said "Gosh darn it, if only I could focus an inch closer I could get the same image as the other system with this different lens!"

Well, no one should ever say that, anyway.

Life's too short.

FF vs APS-C Mini-showdown: K-1 50mm vs K-5 30mm

It was still within inches / cm of each other, even though I was trying to keep apparent subject sizes the same with nearly equivalent lenses. Part of my interest in the comparison is that 30mm isn't quite right for APS-C - it's a smidge wider than ideal - so doing real world test of real lenses in real shooting conditions is far more interesting than mathematical or idealized conditions. The items in the background were much further away (several feet, about a meter for some branches) so the relative distances were still similar. I also had working distance constraints for near focus.

I could re-do it on a tripod and use a measuring tape, and I'd probably get something that splits the difference. But that's not interesting, we know all this already.

What these tests inform me (wide, normal, and tele) is how my current style must change. Since my go-to lenses are wider now on FF, I have to be much more careful of my background selection and optical distortions. I suspect that for familiar things (the human face) at similar coverage to APS-C there will be a difference where FF produces it's most flattering image by selecting longer focal lengths.

In simpler terms it means I'll have to take care not to make portraits of people where I get closer than with APS-C to get a similar image, but end up exaggerating the size of their nose. :)

I swapped my O-ME53 from my K-5 to K-1 for the 135mm tests yesterday. I think the viewfinder might be a little darker - like 3% - but it is SO much easier to MF. Guess I should by another one for the K-5.. .heh...

Camera Strap You'll Use For K-1?

I have a Cotton Carrier hand strap on my K-1 now; no grip, and its pretty excellent. Better than 'normal' wrist strap types for fast use. I skipped the provided nut and used a lay-flat D-ring thing for Black Rapids.

For weddings/events I use the dual Black Rapid rig under my dress jacket. It's not quite perfect for meandering between empty wooden pews with a 70-200 during the ceremony - that makes a pretty distracting 'THUNK' if your attention is lost. But I don't doubt that it'll hold the weight safely. And I keep my jacket pockets empty so I don't fight the straps.

Has anyone posted images with the newer bunch manual focus off-brands lenses? I'm thinking of the 85mm's, but there may be others that are peoples favourites.

My need is for an 85mm, but wider than 24mm is also interesting.

Is there another thread for this already?

Kinda sorta ya exactly, yes.

Here is the Sigma 24mm on the K-1, and 16-45mm @16mm on the K-5. If you find a homeless Sigma 24mm AF Super Wide II, just buy it.

Oh, and the second one is the K-5 / 16mm ;)

I can hear the SR in the K-1 when it's on. I could NOT hear the SR in the K-5 or earlier models. (edit: when it was floating; obvs you can hear it when it shakes or hits the stops. The K-1 makes a slight whisper all the time that SR is on, but only you will be close enough to hear it.)

It shuts off when the camera naps, and the noise stops. And it snaps back to life when you half press to wake the camera back up to take a shot.

I can't really say what battery life is like yet. I suspect I'm pixel peeping a lot so it's draining faster. And my comparison is skewed, since I have the LCD on the K-5 shut off, so it's lasts a long time.

K1 Wedding Photography Impressions

Thx - I have a wedding coming up in a couple of weeks and the K-1, with the higher MP for detail, is going to be the go-to for wide-to-normal shots. Maybe a few tele if time allows.

But the reminder about better high ISO performance makes me think twice about shooting the Sigma 70-200 on the K-5. That would mean buying two K-1's to avoid lens swapping.

Hmmm. What an amazing problem to have... :)

Tele Test

* on reviewing the posted images, the Hanimex seems to be the one for the hexagonal bokeh, which I kinda like. The Pentacon is still pretty nice though!

I did a shoot-off today with the following lenses on the K-1:

SMC Pentax 135mm 3.5
Tair 11A 135mm 2.8
Pentacon 135mm 2.8
Hanimex 200mm 3.3

My primary motivation was that my Sigma 70-200 APO bricks my K-1, and I need something fast-ish, FF, and workable on the K-1.

The tests were front-lit, side-lit, and back-lit, mostly looking for PF, bokeh of OOF point sources, color, handling etc.

It's not even worth posting images - they all performed in the same league, more or less.

But for splitting hairs, here are some comments:

If I were shooting video and needed tele for something (titles? compression?) the Hanimex looks more cinematic. But in some conditions it's bokeh can be harsh. But only in some conditions.

For handling, I'd prefer not to use the M42 to K mount ring. As much as I thought the Tair was magic, which it can be at 1:1 on APS-C, futzing around during lens changes can be tough under time constraints.

The Pentacon has the build quality of a fine watch.

The Pentax SMC 3.5 - even though it's not 2.8, is solid as a tank and worth whatever you've paid for yours. And the difference between 3.3 and 2.8 is nearly zip.

If I had to rank them:

1) Pentacon (overall quality, image, handling)
2) Pentax (overall handling, quality)
3) Tair 11A (razor sharp at any f-stop, not built like a tank, more like a bunker. It's double the weight of the others :)
4) Hanimex 200mm (at f/3.3, it's max, it's nice but for portraits you be yelling at your subject the'd be so far away :P

But I don't have to rank them. The Tair has a stop-less aperture. The Pentax is K-mount. The Hanimex does have a bit more reach. The Pentacon feels like a $2000 lens. So no eBay posting this month ;)

I did a bunch of tests with the 28-70mm f/4 and the 28-80mm f/3.5-4.5 today on the K-1, mostly at f/8 as they are both soft at f/4 or 4.5, and other than a little more reach on the 80mm, they appeared identical in performance.

If I would keep just one it would be the 28-80, even though it's not constant aperture; my copy is just a bit better than the 28-70 wide open.

So I wouldn't call them gems, but since the K-1 is FF it's probably more likely that you'd be stopped down from wide open to f/5.6 on either of them to avoid softness.

I suppose with 36mp and Lightroom you might get by with either wide open, and a lot of clarity/dehaze/sharpening.

The 28-80mm is going in my bag until something better comes along that doesn't need me to sell the other kidney.

Yes - you are correct, but I chose the two shots that most closely resembled each other. I actually thought the 50mm f/4 shot was closer at first, but it had just a bit more contrast in the details, so the 2.8 was a much better match on second look.

Here is the f/2.0 shot for kicks. It's somewhere closer to the f/1.4 shot, as the size of the OOF objects doesn't match the 30/1.4 or the 50/2.8 shot.

I just tried mine - says "Sigma APO DG" on the left of the distance window, and "70-200mm 1:2.8 II Macro HSM" on the other side. Serial 1024951 (FWIW).

Lockup.

Vaporlock.

In the words of the Malibu TV commercial "It's total gridlock, mon!"

So, no.

But like the islanders, I will wait for a firmware fix, or as a last resort, hope that Sigma has a clue.

PGE... Very, very, very true!

For those that have the upgrade bug but can't afford it, they shouldn't feel left out.

The digital 30mm Sigma is sweet - and that's NOT the Art version, either. I think I paid $375 for it new.

For those that might need the extra bokeh for their style or subjects, high ISO performance, or big-print capability, they got ya covered.

First, a quick bonus comparison: How does the K-5's viewfinder compare to the K-1's?

The K-1 viewfinder is a little brighter, clearer, and bigger.

With the O-ME53 magnifying eyecup on the K-5, it's closer, but different. I wear glasses and I can't quite see the entire viewfinder of the K-5 when using it, but manual focussing is better.

Now, the main event... this is one specific test that I've always wanted to do.

How does a 50mm on a FF body look compared to a 30mm on a crop sensor? They should be pretty close, right?

Check out these two shots, which are fairly similar. If you don't peek at the EXIF text on the left side of each image, I don't think you could tell them apart. So don't peek, and scroll down...

1)

2)

(no peeking, answer below, and a twist...)

1) 30mm Sigma @ f/1.4
2) 50mm Pentax @ f/2.8

That's pretty darn close, visually.

So what happens when the 50mm is used at f/1.4? How does that look?

I'm not a huge bokeh-monster fanboy, and the world does NOT always look better at f/1.4. But if you need the extra stop, it's there, and it's a big jump in appearance if your subject distance is much closer than your background distance.

Yep.
