I think you are over selling this a bit. The Wikipedia page you should be linking to is for celluloid, not guncotton.
Celluloid - Wikipedia

Yes, celluloid film is far more flammable than acetate film, but that doesnít mean run in fear from it. The big concern with celluloid film is in prints of movies, specifically playing them, not a strip of still image negatives. A few negatives in an envelope are not going to spontaneously combust.

I realize that your intent was to promote safety, but by overstating the hazards of celluloid film you are spreading FUD, this time at the risk of old family negatives being disposed of in waves. This is the internet after all, and the internet loves to get excited about random things.

Now as far as the folded negative is concerned, I agree that speaking with a professional is a very good idea, and that cutting is a very bad idea. Old negatives, even acetate ones, can be very brittle. Therefore the water bath sounds like a good idea, but Iím hardly an expert on that one. I would definitely caution that warm water should mean not much warmer than around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Much over 80 degrees even modern emulsions start getting very soft.

The Missing Darkroom

My favorite setup is Hewes reels in a Kinderman tank. Kinderman tanks flow chemistry in and out better than other plastic lid/stainless tank combos. Hewes reels have 2 very sturdy sprocket hole pins that make it much harder to load the film crooked. For 120 I use a Patterson style tank, as I have had better luck loading that size than with stainless tanks.

Iíve always had the luxury of a darkroom to work in while developing film, so I will let others comment on changing bags, et cetera, as I may be shopping for one soon.

I highly recommend that for a flash you go with a clean used Vivitar 285HV. It will be more of a learning curve, but once you do learn it, you will be much better off. It doesnít have a white card, but that is easy remedied with an index card and a rubber band. You are kind of stuck on the swivel though. On the plus side, there is a cord you can get that will let you put the flashes light sensor on your hot shoe, while pointing the flash at anything you want - the floor, the ceiling, some persons jacket, whatever! Itís really a great setup once you get the hang of it. For a full used setup you are looking at less than $100.

Edit: make sure you get the HV model, as the older 285 can have a trigger voltage high enough to fry the flash circuit in your camera.

SLR sales versus digital

In a word, no. When the price of new camera gear goes up, so goes the price of used gear. For example, roughly 10 years ago Hoya cranked up the price of Pentax lenses, and within a few weeks the price of used lenses went sky-high as well. When a new FA 50 went from $200 to $270 overnight, used ones quickly went from ~$140 to ~$210. Quite literally a used lens cost more than a new one did weeks before.

... Or get one of these and just manually focus, which is super easy with the Sony mirrorless cameras.

I had something similar happen to me in 2012. Weeks later I ended up finding some of the stolen items, such as an engraved iPod, at a local video game store. It's what prompted me to go mirrorless with my digital gear for a few years. Until I was robbed, I had a Konica Minolta 7D, but I had decided to not take it on a trip with me due to the bulk and weight. I -really- miss that camera. But, mirrorless fixed the bulk and weight issue.

I recently bought this camera for a very good price, but the thing is I bought 2 at the same time from 2 different vendors. The one I am selling seems to work perfectly, but is missing the window over the rear LCD. It’s also missing the rubber plug over the remote socket, but that seems to be a common issue with these models. I will try to post pictures later today, but the body is in very good condition overall. I’m trying to pass the deal I got along to the next person, so the price includes USPS flat rate shipping to the US. Canada will most likely be more expensive. I might end up a dollar or two ahead on this, but I doubt it. I’ve been blessed with some real bargains here on PF, and I like to pass things forward when I can. That being said,I think my return window on this closes in a day or two, so if you want it PM me right away.

Edit: US Camera lists the screen “glass” for ~$18, and the sticky bits for ~$4.

Edit #2: Uploaded photos of the camera. It's not quite as nice as my mind remembered it this morning, but still a nice user. There are some scratches on the top LCD that I couldn't seem to capture, but they don't seem to affect usability.

*ist D screen glass and remote sochet cap source?

Yeah, I don't know what happened to the LCD cover, but it almost looks like it was never there. There doesn't seem to be any evidence that there was any adhesive, et cetera ever on the camera. The camera seems to operate 100% properly, but to be honest I haven't really put it through it's paces yet.

*ist D screen glass and remote sochet cap source?

Hey everyone! After a long search, I came across not one but 2 *ist D bodies for very, very reasonable prices. One however came with a catch - the glass over the rear LCD is missing! Does anyone know where I can find another? If not I can probably fab something up using a bit of scrap plexiglass, but I thought I'd at least try.

Also, this is far less important, but does anyone know where I can find a -something- to cover/plug the remote socket on the side? If not I'll likely just put a small bit of gaffers tape over the holes, but I thought I'd ask.

Thanks!

EDIT:

I just checked uscamera.com. $18.48 for the "glass". That both sounds like a perfectly reasonable price, and makes me say "Yikes!". Maybe I'm too cheap for photography.

DA 35mm F2.4 - advice about lens hood & step-up ring

Option C: lens > step up ring > CPL filter > two or 3 52mm whatever-is-cheapest filters with the glass removed. It works well, is inexpensive with the right sources, is very compact, and will double as a nice big ring to rotate your polarizer.

Digital Slideshows Suck.

And right there, in the first sentence, you hit the nail on the head, you apparently just donít realize you did.

There is by any practical measure zero demand for such a product. ZERO. Well, I guess thereís you, so that makes one, but thatís hardly a market. There really isnít a market for digital frames in general. Most people have either bought a tablet or a smart tv, and no longer see a purpose in having a dedicated photo viewing device.

As far as my software comment was concerned, I was referring to user interface, not photo display.

Digital Slideshows Suck.

Iím sorry Sal, but that isnít even remotely true. The commonly available pre-fabricated panels come in either 16:9 or 4:3 ratio. For a 1:1 screen you are looking at a custom run, and unless you are ordering 100,000 panels at a time, the per unit costs will be significantly higher. That is before you consider the posible need for custom controller circuitry, and the likely need for custom software to look/work right on a square screen.

Item Description
I bought this lens in September from another PF member. It is fantastic, but it isn't the lens for me. The lens seems to be in overall excellent shape. The "G" on the lens cap is missing a bit of it's silver, but other than that I haven't noticed any obvious blemishes. It comes with the matching hood. The rear cap is Pentax branded. Thanks for looking!
