Landscape Cradle Mountain over the Vale of Belvoir

One my recent quick trip across the Tasmanian Highlands, I found this view at the top of the saddle before you descend into the alpine heath country of the Vale of Belvoir. Taken from near where i posted my last photo of the vale, that's Cradle Mountain in the distance. Approximately 12 shot raw pano stitch in PS, post processing in LR.

I recently travelled to Tasmania for a work, an ew experience for me. On the way back to my departure airport, i went via the general area of Cradle Mountain. This wasn't a dedicated photo shoot, just quick stops. I did one 10 minute walk to a promising looking spot, and was rewarded with magnificent views. The wind was gusty, and very cold, air was hazy with an approaching front.

Thanks, the lighting was a challenge. After several attempts, I ended up more or less exposing for the brightest part, then recovering the shadows in Lightroom.

Thank you. That part of Tasmania certainly has unlimited photo opportunities. i'd never visited before, and was there for work. I had four hours to do a three hour trip back from the West Coast to Launceston, my point of departure. Google Maps told me the best route was via the general vicinity of Cradle Mountain, an iconic Tassie destination, so I stopped a few times for quick shots.

Thank you--I had a few versions of this, but the ones which were otherwise better had a bad green flare on the moon, unfortunately.

I attempted to capture an ISS pass this evening, but it was a little close to sunset, and failed. So I waited a little longer to capture the town looking back from the rivermouth, with a near full moon and mars overlooking. 30 sec exposure

Death adders are a small, very well camouflaged snake that you risk stepping on, highly venomous. King browns are actually aggressive and strike repeatedly. You need to wear sturdy boots, long pants, and preferably heavy canvas gaiters as well, as they can strike above the ankle. and that spinifex is actually very spiny and causes itching and irritation on bare skin. not great country to be walking around in,but very rewarding nonetheless.
There was a night i was out photographing lightning--picked a nice clear bit of gravel to stand on, kept shining the headlamp around for ground level intruders, then relised the howling dingoes were getting closer...

Thanks. I've actually been hospitalised from a scorpion bite in spinifex company, suffered while doing some photography--and I'll take a scorpion over a death adder or king brown any day :-)

yes--I couldn't get any higher from that vantage point, and I have always wanted to get that hill out of the way. Quite a hike to get to the top of it, and risky with venomous wildlife. Nature has intervened since, with a very large bushfire that burnt the ground bare all over those hills--once that spinifex is burnt, it is just bare, stony ground underneath. So I can get to more places with less risk from snakes and scorpions now, but the view will be somewhat bare for the next few years.

Nice image--shot recently? All this stormy weather we have been having in the Southern half of WA lately seems to have lots of sunny patches interspersed, no doubt due to the strength of the wind. I drove the Brand Highway north yesterday afternoon, no camera to record some of the amazing vistas created by this weather.

Single exposures , PP in Lightroom. The first one is over our camp from the beach, with mars very bright and red low in the sky. The night sky had a distinct brown tint, probably due to the presence of a crescent moon. Shifting the temperature slightly cooler gives a somewhat surreal effect with the light painting done on the foreground via LED headlamp. I still haven't purchased the 14mm prime I really want for this kind of work :(

Thanks. You just have to be there, don't you. I remember taking that one, with another photographer standing beside me, lamenting that he thought it wasn't going to turn out to much, so had left the camera back in his accommodation :-)

Thanks. this is one of my very early efforts, when I was using a stand-alone program called PTGui. Then I realised it was much easier to do in Lightroom, by exporting to PS.

Landscape The last rays of the setting sun...

Winters here aren't really too hard to take :) just caught the last rays of the setting sun while waiting for the sunset. This is a 15 frame stitch in PS, but the remarkable thing (to me at least), is that they are shot at 18mm focal length. I have (had? ) a self imposed rule of a minimum of 35mm for pano stitches, and while you can see the distortion in the aircraft contrail curling overhead, I thought the overall effect was quite pleasing.
