Thanks for that, Sharky. I had already found this one, and it looks astonishing - but it also looks as if it is only Windows or Mac, but as I said, after an android app

Angerdan, thanks - I hadn't found that one in my searches, but took a quick look, and will go back and study it more fully. That spreadsheet matrix is a great idea!!!

Thanks Adam - gives me motivation to explore Image Sync in greater detail.

I have said this once or twice before in other threads, but I'll say it again: the level of willing sharing of expertise in this Forum is outstanding!

Yeah guys - pulled the trigger on Thursday 20/6/19 and THE PACKAGE arrived am on Tuesday 25/6/19: Pentax KP body (black); Pentax 16-85mm zoom; 55-300mm PLM zoom.

And yeah, you only get the standard small grip here in Oz - but that's okay, I'm a bit of a runt (and at 75 shrinking rapidly!!) with small hands.

Over the moon. Went bananas (Queenslander) taking shots almost as soon as I got everything out of its box!! The autofocus on the 55-300mm PLM is so quiet, and FAST.

If you are interested, have posted first posted sample pics here:

It all happened 3 days ago:

New Pentax KP (black body); new Pentax HD DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE Lens; new Pentax HD DA 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DC WR Lens
Christmas came early!

So paired up the (3 weeks new) 100 F2.8 Macro with the new KP for a quick and dirty road test: some of these are crops from the original: to view the original DNG raw files, go here:

You were right, carlb, it was a long weekend. But it was worth it.

The whole package arrived around 10:00am Tuesday. Man - this 75 yr old was like a 5 year old on Christmas Morning!!!!

Megapixelmk: you were also right: the 55-300 is amazing: cannot hear it focusing, and sometimes I find myself realising I am waiting for it to focus, when it already has. Don't know why Pentax has a reputation for slow autofocus - the 55-300 PLM seems near instantaneous! And sharp! And such a great minimum focusing distance. And yeah, have to keep remembering that zoom release button, just like you said.

Here are a couple of my first shots with the 55-300mm:
Attachment 456312

Attachment 456313

The 16-85mm is also very sharp and quiet, and such a useful range - it sure beats the lowly 18-55mm kit lens that came with my second-hand K50 in every way.

Here are early tests on both ends of its focal range, and its near-macro ability:

Attachment 456314
Attachment 456315

Attachment 456316

The last is a crop of the original.

Thanks all for the encouragement, and esp carlb who alerted me to the eofy discounts in time.

Yes, you are right about the learning curve. I was still learning all the finer details of digital photography after buying my K50 in October 2017, after not using a camera since the early 1980s film days of Pentax K2 and Pentax ME.

It took 3 or 4 tries on the new KP before changed it from shooting JPEG to shooting RAW (.DNG) - with a half-way step of shooting both!!

Thanks Des.

Yeh, could have done with a little more DOF in the second picture - would have got more of the ants in sharper focus. shot at F7 - should have gone up to F16 maybe.

Was having intermittent probs with the shutter locking up - was using a Vello pistol grip with cable as below

May have been occasionally knocking the Lock button with my fingers!!

And the last shot definitely need a higher F stop than the F5.

Need to train myself to pay more attention to these issues for each photograph - maybe even take multiple shots with different F stops to give myself a better chance of ending up with the result I want.

Will be going back to this friend's garden with that in mind.

Ho, Megapixelmk - you have got me there!!! Never gave that a thought, but a good point.

Rather than just change the K50 to KP, maybe K2 to K50 to KP? But that leaves out the Pentax ME (which I still own!!).

Something to keep my mind occupied with while wait impatiently for my new gear!!!

Exactly my reaction GeoJerry: very moody and mysterious. Like a scene from some supernatural movie.

Oh, and I cannot see any differences either!!!

Could this become a "spot the difference" competition subject??

But definitely a beautiful photograph!!

Well guys, C R Kennedy have the KP back in stock, but no special deals as yet.

The two lenses I wanted to buy (the 55-300mm PLM zoom and the 16-85 mm zoom) not listed currently on DCxpert, but just ordered the Pentax F2.8 D FA WR 100mm macro lens from DCxpert through eBay during the big EOFY discount for $559.00 (Listed price $649.00 at Pentax.com.au).

I may or may not still get the 16-85mm and/or the 55-300mm PLM lenses depending on budget and what else becomes available at a good price.
Still want my KP!!

Okay, can't help it:

All these egg comments are just bad yolks.

No egg is what its cracked up to be.

Talk about duck eggs is just a lot of quakery.

You shell out and what do you get?

Let's not get so boiled up about this our brains get scrambled.

And yes, I poached a lot of this - and it isn't very nice of me to not acknowledge from where!

My old tripod needs replacing (the head assembly wobbles around the top of the central column) and I often struggle trying to keep the monopod from wavering around.

Am going to experiment with an old shoulder harness setup I have, on which I have replaced the old thread trigger handle with cable release with a new velo cable release trigger handle, and sit this atop my monopod.

Will also, when I get a new KP and lenses (HD PENTAX 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE Lens, and HD PENTAX DA 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DC WR), look into this LCD hood system you mentioned, which is a total revelation to me, having just come into the world of digital photography November 2018, after a long break (early 1980s) from photography.

The wealth of knowledge and willing advice available from this Pentax Forum is absolutely mind-blowing.

Despite having a registered account with both Ricoh Pentax Australia and C R Kennedy, with email news option ticked, and despite regular visits to both sites and Pentax Forum sites before and during Easter, and doing frequent deals searches, I still did not become aware of the now found 15% Easter Sale here in Oz!!!

Only found out about now - 25/4/19!!! Too late.

What is a fellow desperate to upgrade from K50 to K70 and 1 or 2 good lenses, but limited pensioner budget, supposed to do???

Again, thanks everyone for your comments.

Des:
My sigma is the DL F4.5-6.7. I have been sold on purchasing the Pentax HD 55-300mm PLM lens. I have views many sample photos in variouis threads, including some with that lens and the Pentax Tele converter, and am impressed.
carlB:
No, have not contacted Ricoh or Kennedy yet: spent most of Friday researching, following up suggested threads from all the good people here, and doing some specific searches on my own, esp re the combination of the 55-300 and the pentax tele converter, and noted suggestions by many that an original with spot-on sharp focus, cropped and blown up, will produce as good a result as a closer shot using a tele converter.
BROO:
No offence taken, would welcome more critical, and specific, comments if you have the time to make them I am acutely aware of how many of my shots do not nail the focus. Especially my bird shots. I am especially having probs with hand-held shots using my legacy 200mm lens. Some of that may be motion blur (most were hand-held some with a monopod), but I am often aware while taking shots that I am going back and forth with manual focus trying to find the exact focus. For some reason almost all of the shots I have taken, both last year and this year, and with different lens, of the water dragon lizard, seem spot on, as far as focus is concerned, even when largely magnified. Not so for a lot of my other shots. Perhaps the extra varied nature of the lizard's skin helps my eye when focusing.
Prior to October/November 2018 when I purchased the K50, it was some 40 yrs since I last held a (film!!) camera, and the bulk of the flower shots I uploaded were taken early on after resuming my photography interest with the K50. But I so miss the central microprism focusing aid of my Pentax K2. People were constantly commenting on how sharp my prints were, back in the day, whether they were quick family shots, macro shots, telephoto shots, whatever (had a Pentax M 400mm at one time). When my K2 was stolen, and I replaced it with my Pentax ME, I hated the central split focusing, and find the plain matte focusing screen of my K50 very challenging.

Yes, I have experimented with adjusting the viewfinder diopter - while not wearing specs, while wearing my reading glasses, while wearing my distance glasses, but it doesn't seem to help. Have invested in a Pentax 1.2 magnifiying eye cup, which helped marginally. Have contemplated purchasing a central microprism focusing screen from Focusingscreens.com, but am waiting to see if I decide to purchase the KP or K70 before investing in a replacement focusing screen.

Have decided to relinquish using the autofocus 18-55mm lens for a while, and spend time experimenting with my various legacy lenses.

Have contemplated paying for some one-on-one time with someone who knows all the intricacies of digital photography. Back in the 1970s, I automatically chose Fstop or shutter speed to suit, but frequently just point and shoot (or focus and shoot). Still forget to do such things as tell the K50 which lens I am using when using my older lens, still struggle to remember to either turn shake reduction on or off, choose a better iso setting, need to understand focus lock.

It is all a different ball park to the simplicities of a film camera - esp my old K2 with that central microprism focusing screen which just POPPED when correct focus was achieved!!

OK guys, sorry for the ramble.

And BROO, I will take on board your exhortation to PRACTICE, and would, as I said, welcome any specific criticisms and suggestions you and anybody else would like to make.

But I think I will also go ahead early next week and buy the KP or K70 (I had decided, even before the K50 purchase, that I wanted a new K70, but had the expense of a 12 day cruise ship trip looming, so bought the second hand K50. But I think now is the time follow my original wish. Will almost certainly purchase the 55-300 with the camera, and after all the reading and advice, still tossing up between the 18-135 and the 16-85. But my bank balance is now on notice that it is going to take a big hit, very soon!!

Cheers, all. Will let the curious know when I finally make the jump!!

For anyone wanting to make further suggestions, but with more to work with, or those who just like looking (:)):
