K-1 paired with DA20-40 Ltd crop lens

I was playing with this lens on my K-1 the other day. I find at approximately 30mm, it's the best with minimal vignetting. At the other 2 ends, it's a lot more noticeable.

Alternative choice for Ricoh Image Sync App - Pentax Photo Sync

The app store has not told me there is a new version. I tried using the current one yesterday while out on a shoot, and no dice. Ended up using the Pentax app. I'll see if I can force it to update and try it out again.

edit - turns out it is updated (must have happened after I tried it last time) and it worked successfully on one test. I will keep testing and if anything is wrong, I'll let you know.

My K-1 had the 1st card slot act funny on me after I second shot for someone, and they gave me a card to use. Was it the card that caused the problem, or just a fluke? I don't know. I did find I could get the card to eject if I put pressure on the corner of the card vs the middle. I've been using it that way now with no issues. Almost second nature now to pop the card out that way. Something for you to try regardless. Other then that minor issue, it's working like a champ.

Same issue I had with IOS, wouldn't transfer the JPG's. I have to try it again. Maybe I just did something wrong.

Love this shot. Wow. People who have this lens really seem to love it. I'm wanting a FF wide lens, and this might fit the bill.

Tethering in Lightroom

That makes sense. I downloaded the simple one, and it's exactly what it is, simple, but for what I require, it's perfect. I'd just make the changes on the camera as I go, but I could see it being useful in some cases if the camera is positioned in a location where access isn't easy, so the other version could very well be useful in those conditions. Thanks!

Tethering in Lightroom

I know if can be done but curious what the difference is (if any) between the two downloads on the Pentax site.

1 - PENTAX Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® (Simple Version)
2 - PENTAX Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® via IMAGE Transmitter 2

Is the second one wireless?

And you got a decent camera. The K-01's are kind of ugly, but work well.

Question regarding older studio strobes

I recently picked up an older Speedotron lighting setup. It came with the cable to hook into the PC Sync port on my K-1. I know there are known high voltage issues with speed lights that go into the hot shoe. Do I need to worry about this potential issue using pc sync? The power pack in question is a Blackline model 2403B if that makes a difference.

I guess the next question would be, if the voltage will be an issue, what's the best way to tackle / isolate the setup from the camera to prevent damage?

My slot one spring was originally the same, but now it's not as good at slot 2. I was going to send it in for repair but decided not too. I can still get the card out, so not too concerned.

I have the Sigma 10-20 but not that teleconverter. I do have an old film Tamron 2x teleconverter somewhere. Might be an interesting test to play with.

Agreed. It has some strange things with it, but it definitely has some features that are interesting and I hope they work as well as one would expect. We all know Pentax has done some interesting new features that work well.

Newbie - What ISO setting do you K-1 shooters use?

If it's just for web use, I've no problem shooting at 12,800. As others have said, I'd rather have a noisy photo vs a photo that's not sharp because of hand shake or motion blur.

K-1 EV in manual mode

This is not an answer to your question but more just a comment on your situation. I have found the same situation with my K-1, but that being said, any of my Pentax camera's have always seemed to exhibit this "problem". I personally like a photo that is slightly underexposed, so when I expose how I think I'd like the photo, it ends up being even more underexposed then I've planned. Through experience with the camera, I now make sure I expose to the right to get more what I actually want. I find darker scenes tend to be worse, but again with the experience with the camera, I know to watch for this. I shoot RAW, but have set the JPG to a neutral profile and this seems to help with the rendering of the preview to be a little more true to what the files are when imported into the computer, but I still do make sure my exposure is a little higher then what I want, just so there is less adjusting after the fact in the computer.

K-1 - Memory card ejector

Agreed. I've sent an e-mail to Pentax Canada to get an ETA on repair time prior to sending it in. Don't want to be without the camera for a shoot if I can help it. Worse case I guess, I use my K-5iis, but it won't be the same. lol

K-1 - Memory card ejector

So today I was second shooting for someone. They gave me a Sony card to use. I normally only use Sandisk or Lexar. Probably just a fluke it happened at this point, but when I went to give her the card back, it wouldn't eject. I managed to get it out, and I can put in another card, but nothing springs like it should. Second slot if working fine. When I put a card into the first, the card works, just have to manually pull it out. Anyone else have this happen to them? I expect it will have to go in for repair, not unless someone else has had this happen and knows a easy fix...

A couple of months ago I came across a couple that were from London England (I'm in Southern Ontario), and they were visiting the location I was at, and one of them had a K-5 and the other a K-1. My first K-1 I've seen in the wild. (other then my own of course)

K-1 Screen brightness....

Nope. I have used it before, but I'm one who always turns my camera off between shots while moving around, and that function always goes back to default for me.

One thing too add, but I don't see it making a difference, a lot of these were with flash. Full manual on the flash and the camera, but that still shouldn't effect what I see on the back of the camera.

I do use the histogram as well. I suspect I wasn't paying enough attention to it, and this was my first big shoot with this camera, so still learning the in's and out's of it. Big step up from the K-5, so just something I'll have to pay more attention too. Thanks for the tip.

K-1 Screen brightness....

Just wondering if anyone else has had to adjust their screen brightness a lot to get an accurate representation of what you're getting out of the camera or not. I shot a wedding a couple of weeks ago and have been trying to figure out why I had such a discrepancy with my photos. Looking at the previews on the camera, they looked decently exposed. (perhaps slightly under, but I like that look) When I got them into Lightroom, there was a difference of 1 to 2 stops. Not what I was expecting. I went back and comparing to what was on my screen (camera) vs computer, and the difference was very obvious. I did some tests to see if I could figure out why, and mostly got the same kind of results, especially on slightly underexposed shots. Over exposed shots didn't seem as much difference, but perhaps it's because it brought the images to a level I like. I'm not sure. I ended up turning down the screen brightness on the K-1 to more match what I'm seeing on my computer. (it's calibrated...) Just wondering if any others have had a similar experience and what you did to fix it. I have camera color profile set to natural...

I just shot a wedding this past weekend with my K-1, and it worked great. One thing I was very pleased with, a few shots, TTL failed me, and shots were underexposed. Easily recovered 2 stops (lower ISO) and quality was still very good. I did a few shots also where I was happy I had the tilt screen. I would have just been guessing had I not had the screen to help me out.

How well is the K-1 doing (selling) in North America and the world ?

I myself am in Canada, (Ontario) and when I was ready, neither Henrys or Vistek carry any Pentax stock, and said special order. Minimum 2 weeks. I called up "The Camera Store" in Alberta and they had 1 left, but it was on hold. The person ended up not committing, so they shipped it out to me the next day. When I was talking with them (it was a Monday), they said the previous Friday, they had 3 in stock. When I called on Monday, other then the one on hold, the others had all sold over the weekend, so it seems to be wanted by the people. The fact that a lot of camera stores are no longer carrying Pentax is discouraging.
