I used my Pentax 300mm f4.5 F* lens on a K5iis to capture a Buffalo & Pittsburgh RR train on its way to one of the largest coal fired electric generating plants in the USA, Homer City, PA. Lead locomotive #458 is a 3000 H.P. rebuild of a former Southern Pacific RR electro-Motive SD-45 built in 1967.

Optically and mechanically PERFECT-a few specs of dust inside. No haze, fungus or other issues. Cosmetically close to like new except for some paint wear on the sharp edges and marks on the lens hood. Soft case has some worn areas, hard case is has a few marks.

I purchased this lens new from B&H Photo back in the mid 1990's and have taken superb care of it ever since! GREAT lens for fast action sports, indoor HS sports, concerts, theater and wildlife. Worked well with my Tamron 1.4X converter too.
SELLING BECAUSE-I quit shooting sports and indoor events and never use this big, beautiful lens anymore!
VERY Sharp wide open, RAZOR sharp at f 5.6 and f8!! Good contrast, color and bokeh. You won't find a better, or nicer Pentax mount 300mm f2.8 for this price.

My K-5 and old manual focus Tokina SZ-X 60-300mm f4-5.6 delivers again. Male cardinal on a dead blue spruce branch.
I find myself using this early 1990ís Tokina in place of the Pentax 55-300mm DA most of the time.

I subscribe to both TRAINS and RAILFAN & RAILROAD magazines. High quality railroad subject photography is featured content in both magazines, though Trains is aimed toward railroad professionals and managers these days.
R&R has a monthly photo tips column. A couple of months ago, the editor went into detail explaining why photographers should stick with top of the line Nikon or Canon lenses and mid to to line DSLR bodies.

Mr. Editor had started his photographic pursuits with a Pentax, itís cheap 50mm lens and third party zoom lenses. He said the Pentax never worked right and heíd never met anyone who had a Pentax that didnít have problems. Never got a truly sharp or well exposed photo with that Pentax. Next, the third party lenses were all summarily dismissed as inferior junk. ďStigma, and the likeĒ may seem attractive based on price, but I trusted once in a lifetime photos to one and they were all unsharp.

Now, only about 65,000 rail enthusiasts subscribe to R&R , but they were told Pentax and all third party lenses are unable to produce high quality photos. In the following weeks, several more contributors to the photography column also made disparaging comments about Pentax and even Pentax brand lenses. I guess they donít want to see the large collection oof fine, sharp, well exposed and composed images Iíve taken with my junk Pentaxes and inferior lenses.

Heat mirage coming off the tracks and the hot engines made me glad I chose my manual focus Tokina SZ-X 60-300mm lens for the K-5 today. General Electric D9-44CW #9318 leads a fast Norfolk Southern double stacked container freight westbound at Burd's crossing, Derry Township, Westmoreland County, PA. this afternoon.

Iíve worked with two women who were also part-time package handlers at the Pittsburgh, PA area UPS railroad/truck hub.
Both women told me stories regarding package abuse and mis handling, most of which is done on purpose. Drop kicking small boxes , which have fallen off the conveyor, back onto the pile. Standing on packages to reach the top of the stack in a truck. Tumbling heavy packages end over end. The favorite targets for abuse? Any package with FRAGILE or HANDLE WITH CARE written or taped all over. I believe that to be true, as the most mangled UPS parcels Iíve received were ones labeled fragile.

The handlers donít care. Unless a package breaks open or is run over by a truck, any damage claim is usually impossible for the recipient to collect damages upon. Insurance only helps when they lose a package, not when one is mangled.

I received an Amazon Prime padded envelope last year which had been run over! Looked like a forklift tire track. Fortunately, the small item in the envelope had shifted to the other end. I had a photo, but deleted it by mistake.

Walmart is by far the worst shipper when it comes to packing appropriately. We’ve received broken glass jars and other damaged items several times. They use huge boxes, however the only energy absorbing material is wadded craft paper. The paper doesn’t keep items in place at all. Useless.

Iíve received numerous packages and envelopes from USPS, FedEx and to a lesser extent, UPS which look like they were stomped, sat upon, stuck in machinery, and in one case run over! A recent Pentax Marketplace purchase arrived from USPS in a box looking like it fell off a truck going 55 MPH! Luckily, the sender had adequately cushioned the K-5 body the box contained. Iíve posted photos of that package.
So, let us see the damaged, mangled, squashed, torn or filthy pancakes youíve received!

Talk about losing money! Just sold my 7,000 actuations K-30 body with a dead aperture block for $75 shipped. $11.20 shipping and $4 PayPal fees, Iíll net $60.80. I was using it with older K and KA mount lenses, but itís a pain to not be able to use any of my sharp, newer Pentax AF lenses. Pretty sure the new owner plans on putting a new solenoid in the K-30. I canít Make the repairs due to diabetic neuropathy in my fingers. Dealing with tiny little parts is very trying and often ends in disaster.

A juvenile wild turkey "hides" in the weeds bordering a freshly planted field. The 1980's Sigma 400mm f5.6 MC MF lens handled this backlighted situation pretty well just one stop down from maximum. I am amazed at the good shots I get with this much maligned lens. Plus, it cost me less than $50.
