Online photo posting advice. Flickr? Instagram? Other?

Just another vote for Flickr. I have used it for a long time and found it safe and reliable. However, for friends and local networking I use Facebook. I have stopped using Instagram. It may be my age but I just didn't get along with it - the layout and the 'atmosphere' is all rather naff. It about getting followers at any cost. Many people/ business will follow you just in the hope of you following them back. I like the Flickr community, they are far more honest, welcoming and like minded. However, If you looking to build a local network, Facebook may be more appropriate.

I have to say I don't like this article. Maybe Josh's original work wasn't exploitative, but using these heartbreaking pictures along with a description of the photographic equipment is.

Does anyone have K3 focus issues?

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the delay in getting back. I have been through and micro-adjusted all my lenses. This appears to have solved the issue for now. I haven't used them all in the field yet but with the ones I have, the focus is more reliable. Here are the adjustments:

DA21 f3.2 +9
DA35 f2.4 +6
DA40 XS +5
DA50 f1.8 +4
DAL 55-300 +3

Sigma 17-50 None

Sigma 10-20 None

Interestingly the adjustments get less as the focal length gets shorter - not sure why would that be.

Thanks again

Thanks. I will post some pics later. I have dodgy eyes and have adjusted the viewfinder. reading around it seems as though it might just be that all the lenses need microadjustment. I will try that again too.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I don't have any attachment space left on here. I have tested the camera many times with many lenses. Focus accuracy through live view is good, but very often missing focus when using the view finder. This is with the same settings. I am going to try cleaning the mirror again to see if that solves it. No I haven't tried the af sensor. How do I clean that?

Which route are you hiking in May? For most areas here the rainy season doesn't start until june - unless you are right down in southern Kyushu or Okinawa. So in which case you might not have to worry too much about humidity at that time.

Hi all. The Auto Focus on my K3 seems very unreliable. There are no problems with live view where it is accurate. However, when I use the viewfinder I am getting a lot of back focus. This is with ALL my lenses. I have tried cleaning the contacts and the mirror but this has not rectified he issue. I have tried fine tuning the lenses but the focus issue seems to be random. It does hit focus occasionally but more than often does not. I don't remember my K30 being so bad. Is this a K3 thing? Is it worth upgrading to the KP to solve the issue? Do other DSLR brands suffer from the same issues when using the view finder to focus? Thanks.

Thanks for the advice and feedback.Actually, I have changed lenses and am starting to get better results. I was using the FA50 1.4 at f3.5 and 1/500. I think part of the problem lies with this lens, it seems to be back focusing and front focusing randomly. (It was a recent acquisition and will shortly be going) I have tried my other primes and have had the best luck with the DA50 1.8. What I am doing is asking people to pose for me for street portraits. I was hoping to get a shallow depth of field. However, although its more static than traditional street photography, there is still bit movement - so you are right in suggesting a smaller aperture.

Apologies. Maybe I was just having a bad day and the K3 isn't as bad as I thought.... but KP is definitely on the horizon ;)

Thanks again!

Thanks, yes. The KP seems to have the most reliable AF and this is a possibility. However, I have become quite frustrated with my K3 autofocus so I am looking at other brands too. I don't need bells and whistles just something that focuses accurately. I am also considering mirrorless. I have a Ricoh GR which is wonderfully sharp and accurate. I want the same results but at around 50-85mm fov.

I have been using my Pentax K3 for a few years now. Its fine for most things but recently I have been getting into street and street portraits. Unfortunately the AF is just too unreliable in these situations. Even with primes, although they do focus quickly very few shots are actually really in focus. Looking for a camera with reliable AF for around 500 dollars secondhand, including lens if possible. Any ideas?? Thanks.

Looking for a second 35mm for street

Thanks everyone for the advice. I am choosing between the FA35 and DA35 2.8macro - both are similarly priced here. The 31 ltd is a nice thought but just out of my price range. I have the da21 which I use occasionally but find it a little wide for my style of shooting. Hopefully one of these 35s will be my New Years present. Thanks again!

Hi all,

I have been using the plastic DA35 2.4 for street photography. I really like the field of view it gives on my K3, plus it is fast focusing. However, I find the lens difficult to love. The front element is a little exposed and the build is sharp and plasticky. So I am looking for a lens that gives me the same field of view, is fast focusing and lovable at the same time - any ideas? I have used the da40xs which I do really like but it is just a bit too tight. My budget is around 200 dollars second hand. Thanks.

Check out Open Shot Video Editor. Its open source - free and very easy use. It does pretty much everything you will need to do for video. If you really want to pay for something then Premiere Pro is the best.

Best lenses for video (on k-70)

I am in Japan - the average price here for second hand in good condition is 20,000yen which works out about 140 sterling. I think this is a good price. Be aware it can be a little soft at 2.8 but this won't matter as much with video. I don't think you will be disappointed with the Sigma. I don't use my Pentax for video but if you are interested in looking at some sample photographs I have an album on Flickr. Sigma 17-50 2.8 | Flickr
Cheers

Will your budget stretch to the sigma 17-50 2.8? I am not sure of the prices in the UK but this is a great lens with silent focusing. Also its 2.8 so bright enough for indoor use. There is also the Sigma 17-70 which may be slightly cheaper.

DA15 for hiking?

Hello any walkers or hikers out there.

I have been using my Ricoh GR for hiking and climbing. It's great but I want to start using my K3 more regularly and am looking for a small, light lens solution. Most of the hiking I do is on mountains so weight is an issue. I have used the sigma 17-50 and 10-20 but both of these are fairly large and weighty. I like to shoot wide forest scenes and of course the mountain views. The focal length on the GR is just about right although wider would be better which is why I am thinking of the DA15. Is this the best option? Thanks.

Thanks everyone. I have just found a DA - L version for the equivalent of 60 US dollars on line. I am not really a zoom person - only for events like this so I am going to pick this up first and see how it goes. Picked up a lens hood as well.
Thanks again!

Which zoom for the lunar eclipse?

Hi all, I am think of upgrading my zoom before lunar eclipse on July 27th. At the moment I use a old Sigma 28-300 that needs to be upgraded. I want to get one of the Pentax 55-300 zooms but am not sure which one to go for. Is it worth spending extra for the HD version or will one of the cheaper versions suffice? How is the DA-L version?? I will be buying second hand. Thanks!

Hi Rojaba,
I have also just opened an Instagram account. Until recently I have been using only Flickr and Facebook to share photos. Flickr for general public and Facebook more for freinds and aquaintances. However, recently I have noticed a shift away from Facebook towards Instagram, particularly amongst younger people - so I have decided to give it a try. Anyway, I would like to add you and anyother Pentaxians who have instagram accounts! Thanks

My instagram ID is "pond2803"

Just in case my Flickr is https://www.flickr.com/photos/jamstairs/
Cheers!

Have you considered the K70? I am not sure of the prices in your area but here in Japan a new k70 is cheaper than a secondhand k3ii. If resolution is what you are after this could be the way to go.

Does the DA 50 1.8 have focusing problems?

In my experience the DA50 1.8 hunts a lot - especially in live view (K30 and K3). It is also distractingly noisy. If you are looking for a 50mm I personally wouldn't recommend this lens.

I shoot in RAW and than develop the files in Adobe Lightroom - it gives you plenty of control over the final colors. If you really want profiles check out Huelight Profiles - they have some for the GR.
