Combining tak 50/1.4 8el+7el

I'm curious how the thread starter determined that "the front is the best part" of the SMC 7-element lens. It is an entire, singular device, and cannot be separated as such.

The 8-element Takumar was considered the better performer both then and now. I wouldn't feel at all bad owning either (assuming I wanted such a lens). It is going to be an extremely rare hobbyist that can somehow jumble together the elements from two different lenses and come out with a device that is functionally superior to either of the devices they started with.

Not sure if folks with an interest / "love" of Pentax can gloat about such things. I think a problem for Nikon is looking special enough to attract attention. I know of Fuji glass that is special, along with their very different bodies. I think Canon's R series bodies seem sort of ordinary looking but good performing, generally, and they have some interesting glass. Olympus has some cool glass and they've done quite well with image stabilization. Panasonic doesn't interest me but I think they've got some good cameras for video work, and the L-mount provides access to a lot of different glass.

I don't know what would interest people in the Nikon Z system. It wouldn't shock me if they end up abandoning Z mount and sticking with F as they haven't shut down that mount like Canon did with the EF mount.

It could have been a case of Pentax being a very Japan-centric company. Some of the color combinations seemed right out of the world Hello Kitty.

The GXR was modular, there was a Leica mount sensor module, etc. The viewfinder was an add-on. I think it was kind of costly at the time and it's not small. It came out in 2009.

28mm Limited for APS-c?

I'd like to see some supporting evidence that Pentax isn't making money on prime lenses.

Actually it would be interesting to see which of their products are net positives to the bottom line and which are net negatives.

Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy time spent here, it is a great resource for Pentax equipment as well as photography in general.

The K-3 II and KP are both quite capable. I think I would lean towards a KP but there are advantages to both.

Quoted for truth. I'd also like to add "don't make it look like a baby's toy next time around" to something they should learn. Wasn't there also something about the K-01 running K-30 firmware and it wasn't quite a 100% fit?

I think "hunting perfection" with the Star lenses is exactly what the Star lens should do, with less regard to weight, size, and cost. It's not really what I personally want but I think the K-mount ecosystem is better off having those options available as well as the Limited's and the "normal" glass.

I also think it makes sense to have the Star lens in the high-20's, with the Ltd 21 and 31 on either side as far as focal lengths are concerned. It's unfortunate knowing it won't get a stop-down lever and aperture ring for folks still wanting those things. But that's how it goes.

HD Pentax 31mm F1.8, 43mm F1.9 and 77mm F1.8 Limited lenses dilemma.............

Remember that Internet-shared brick wall shots and pixel peeping like we have available to us today was not really a thing when the FA Ltd's where developed. I think folks accepted more vignetting then, or at least were less likely to complain about it on forums that would harm lens sales & reputations.

I feel like film & "real" prints hide some imperfections a bit and people are less likely to be concerned with something like vignetting on an otherwise nice photograph. I know I will accept IQ in my film shooting that I would not be so happy with if I took the shot with my Pentax DSLR.

They had three separate APS-C digital bodies for sale at the same time for years. It does seem odd to me to not have the KP around as "the novel one" as there's always been one of those along with "the lower cost / more simple / amateur one" and "the advanced / professional one". KP seems pretty different from the K-70 and the K-3 various versions.

85mm options for MX - looking past the M-series f2...

Another thread where people either complain about the M 85 "not being good enough" along with folks sharing great images taken with the M 85. Lots of fun.

Along with the M 85, I have enjoyed using the Tamron Adaptall 90mm f2.5 Macro (mine is the 52B) which gives a nice softness wide open and opens up great close-up options that traditional 85 to 100mm lenses won't be able to provide. It's a heavy lens and twice the length of the M 85. Should also be cheaper to acquire a good one.

The M 120 f2.8 interests me but I can't really rationalize it with the pile of glass I already own. Maybe check out samples and such of that lens as well.

A lot of Pentax zooms lost distance scales over the years. Some of them also lack hard stops at either end of the focusing range which is really awful. One of the few things I really don't like about my 18-135.

I would check tests & samples of the lenses when they hit the street. Some of the lenses that moves from SMC to HD performed noticeably better. Sometimes not. Wait until the tests and people can judge for themselves what they want to do.

Just because a process is cheaper than the previous does not mean it is somehow worse. I believe the methods of application are easier with the HD group of coatings than SMC are/were. "HD coatings" are also a group of coatings and nt just one to be applied.

Wasp makes a good point about cap semi-interchangability. Perhaps the "N" cap being 3rd party, with looser tolerances, makes it easier to fit onto the Chinon lens.

The major retailers in the US will have the lens within hours to a couple of weeks at the very most. They most likely have them sitting there well ahead of time and then can start actually selling them when the go-ahead is given globally by Ricoh.

About the missing element, I think someone just didn't have enough coffee that morning, because there's no way they just took a lens element out of an otherwise unchanged stack-up.

The Pentax A 28 f2, 50 f1.2, and 85 f1.4's are all loved lenses by Pentax shooters. The 20 f2.8 is also very apricated in a system that doesn't have as many wide angle options as other systems might offer.

bdery, is the guidance on good light with the 18-50 due to the slow-ish max aperture, a need to stop down for improved performance, both, or something else?

There was the Zeiss Distagon 18 f3.5 in Nikon F mount. More obtainable and useful to a Pentax owner would probably be the FA 20 f2.8 which is pretty close to your ask of an 18 f2.4. Another option would be the not at all small Sigma 20mm f1.8 EX DG.

If you really want a good fast 18mm on a crop body (understandable ask, honestly) the Fuji 18mm f2 WR and one of their bodies to match might be right up your street. But obviously that's a bunch of money.

The other option, obviously, is a Ricoh GR III.

Almost all of my shooting in bars was with 28's and 50's where you'd have many more options to pick from but if those aren't focal lengths you want, they're not what you want.

I would not fault you at all for going K-1000 over the KR-10 or any other camera on that list. I think it's probably a great camera, and there's a definite upside to having an all-mechanical camera to take with you, I just never have issues that make me want to go quite there.

If you ever want to search for a specific model, the Ricoh XR7 interests me more, and I actually own one and use it often. The Chinon CE-4 and CE-4s are also nice to use (but not so great to service, I think, from what I've read / been told).

I would not pay any money for a camera that does not allow for manual ISO control. Not all film has DX coding on the cassette and I wouldn't want to follow it all the time if it did. You may not find it to be an issue at all, I'm just speaking for myself.
