The Asahi Pentax S1a body incorporated a mechanism which activated the stop down pin on AutoTakumar and Super Takumar Lenses when the shutter was fired. IOW a proportional closing of the aperture. My H2 didn't depress the pin enough but the movement was sufficient enough to trip a semi auto lens.

Note: A Super-Takumar lens may not properly work on Auto, because the lever in the camera may not push the lens pin fully closed. Once one has an exposure setting, one can close the lens by selecting lens to manual (after composing wide open on auto setting)
The early lenses were just tripped to close the pre-set aperture via a spring. They were not proportional. Check to see if you are getting the proper aperture.

I have this lens bought new. It was my most brilliant sharp lens, and thus I was most perturbed when I noticed some haze forty years later. Took it to a camera repair facility because I thought it was fungus. Not so. Lens separation is common with this model. But don't despair, I could not find any problems with the images it produced. They looked just as fine as ever.

I stayed away from the over-cooked ones. Picked one of the more natural renditions.

The KX is one of the best classic film bodies. Solid quality. MX is another K mount option.

They are very well made. I have several versions of them.

What should happen if you cock the self timer and then cock the shutter and press the shutter trigger is:
Nothing - except the timer will start running until it reaches the end. Then it will trip the mirror and shutter. Without batteries and a film inside (to reflect light values), the auto exposure can be erratic.

They are all good cameras and will give the same results if they are working properly. As for the light meter, it may pay to take off the bottom plate and see if there is anything obvious; broken wire, corroded contacts etc. In any case, one can't expect light meters to be perfect after half a century. Use our phone or the sunny 16 rule instead.
