K-30 / K-50 Aperture Block Failue - Repair Solution available

When I asked a Pentax rep, I was told in so many words, get lost, out of warranty. It's cost me about $140.00 so far to have a 3rd party repair. Hopefully, Ricoh has turned a leaf and will repair future failures for their customers even though out of warranty as this is a known failure for a certain segment of their cameras.

Happy for you!

Corel Aftershot Pro 3 now supports Pentax K1

I've had good luck playing with Corel Aftershot pro 3 so far. One member had it crash on him 3 times, got his money back, but so far I haven't had the problem. For the money, pro 3 is a good choice for editing DNG files though I prefer lightroom. I bought the video book: lightroom6/cc training for photographers by Tony Northrup for $23.00. It's okay, what I don't like is when he tells you to open up a tool, but doesn't tell you where it's at. A lot of basic stuff also. But I enjoy what he mentions as he tells you, for example, how to do portrait stuff by using certain tools. He also gives you a link to his video's, but you can also find this stuff from other authors.

lightroom is quite involved and it's helpful to have a book for looking up info as compared to reading on-line from Adobe. There are other books you can purchase, so i can't say what's best. I see license keys for $38.00 on Ebay for after shot, so it's cheap compared to lightroom.

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

is it under warranty? You have a common failure that exists in the K30/K50, and from my same probelm, and others, it's due to the aperture control block. I'm on my 2nd repair from a guy named mark at Pentax Camera Repair - Aperture Control Repair.

check it out and you can call him or whatever.

Hi vasi, Welcome to the club of failures K50/K30. My wife's K50 had the same problem, but after two fixes, it seems at the moment anyway, it's working. I have a K5 and a K1 and have never had a problem. The more expensive the camera, the better it is so I've read.

Remember, you can use it in manual mode. Also, try sport scene and shoot off a bunch, sometimes that may cure the problem for a bit. One member said he tried a different lens, and it fixed the problem, it's really weird.

To double check, use 1 sec exposure in manual mode, and go from a wide open lens to a narrow setting, and see it the shutter widens/narrows by looking at it when taking the shot. If it stays narrow, then it's the aperture block.

edwinm, I did the same, the $117.00 includes return postage. After 2 months, mine failed, and I mailed back to Mark which was fixed again under the warranty he gives, he paid for return postage. We'll see how long this fix will work.

Let us know how your fix works out after a few months.

I have read for all cameras, cheaper the price, higher the failure rate which makes sense, and they are on average, 5 to 7%. But the K30/K50 based on photogem's simple sample, but to the point calculation hits it on the head, and can you imagine the ones thru out the world that hasn't made it to the big screen? The failure rate is so high for the k30/K50 that cottage industries are popping up.

What's also interesting, that on average, they fail in the time span of 1 to 2 years, and around 1 K to 3 K shutter activations from what I've read on a couple of forums.

I had a 2nd repair done on my wife's K50, we'll see how long this lasts.

Rick, Don't blame you, we have enough of this beta testing from MS. I'm sure in the future they will improve as for the money, hard to beat for K1 dng. Seems like you have other tools to play with, for now, I'll stick to Lightroom.

Happy shooting.

Had a friend that did train shots, and he just did it as a hobby, sold a lot of prints.

Here in W''burg,VA, lots of good nature shooting and landscapes.

Rickster, good info, think I'll wait before buying. I'll continue playing with it but really like lightroom.

Corel brags how fast it is, etc., and gets good reviews, but the reviewers aren't users. Corel painshop works okay,so perhaps they will fix Aftershot as we really need an alternative to Lightroom and Capture One Pro is too much for me.

Supakatti, Sometimes companies rush out their products and depend on users as beta testers, hopefully it will get better. I keep extending Lightroom, but they take away tools in the one you buy. Many people are unhappy about this.

Yes, life goes on.

i agree as their tech support first tier isn't very good, luckily I got a manager who helped. But you can't beat the price as aftershot will give updates and Lightroom won't unless you go to the CC and pay 9.99 forever. So, a little headache, but you save money.

Rickster, what a beautiful train shot. Nice framing.

I also have an old prime 50 mm 1.4, about 30 years old. The tool that i really like in lightroom is the dehaze, amazing what it does for the sky.

I go back and forth with lightroom vice aftershot, bu ti have to play more with both.

TADA is right. Guess you had bought an older version, but it should have updated the way I updated old Trial ver. I didn't have to do uninstall, it just updated what I had already ,old version.. I installed both K1 DNG and K1, so you should do both.

This gives me some faith now in case I want to buy, want to play with the DNG shots for shadows (brighten) once i find out where the tools are hidden.

Real happy for you as it's great to help another member and Pentax user. Tell Corel tech support you fixed it. Are you going to keep it?

Rickster, I followed the instructions that were mailed to me, and I reduced the K1 dng file to 348K from 42 G due to mailing restrictions, and was able to open it in the trial ver., what I have is 3.3.0.234. It's on another computer running win 10 using 1st gen Intel I5. Had to use old computer due to the fact that I D/L / deleted the 1st trial version of Aftershot pro 3 which didn't work, and couldn't reload another Trail ver..

I loaded both K1 (dng) and K1 from "get more" which lists all supported cameras.

Did a couple of edits, don't really know pro 3, and edits worked okay.

I'm playing around with lightroom trial ver, and really like it, but corel is a lot cheaper.

Any questions,let me know.

Rickster, I haven't tried it yet, hope I get better results than you. Corel is noted for it's terrible support. I would send your findings to Diane Sweet directly. See what she says.

Are you running the free trial version, or did you buy it?

Sopakatti, I know how you feel as I got a run around for a couple of days. I played with adobe photoshop and I like Corel paintshop better. I do like lightroom as the tools work real well, and I bought a book to help out. But i have 27 days left on aftershot pro 3, so I'll see how that works. Adobe wants everyone to buy into their cloud, no updates, just fixes on the key version. At least Corel will give you updates.

What a battle with Corel to get their Trial free version corrected. I will take a pat on the back, thank you. I kept after Corel to update Aftershot pro 3 to include the Pentax K1. I haven't yet updated, but I will. Also using Adobe lightroom which I really like, I'll play with both and see how they compare. Lightroom is more expensive, and if you buy the key version you don't get all the tools as the one from the cloud.

Hello,
My name is Diane Sweet and I manage the technical support team at Corel. Your support ticket has been escalated to me for review.
First I would like to apologize for not providing you the level of support you deserve. We strive for excellent customer service and this time we failed. For that I'm sorry.
In regards to the camera profile Pentax K1, it is available with our latest update that was released Tuesday April 25, 2017 and here is how I was able to access it.
1. If you arleady have AfterShot Pro 3 installed, go to Help, About AfterShot 3 and verify your version #. If the version number is not equal to 3.3.0.234, go to this link AfterShot Pro Updates to download and install Update 3.
2. Once update 3 is installed. launch AfterShot Pro 3, click on Get More on the right hand side, scroll down to Pentax and scroll down a bit more to locate K-1.
To the right, you will see a small black box with the words "Free", click on Free. It will take you to download and install what you need for Pentax K-1
(see attached screenshots)

I hope these instructions will help you obtain the camera profile you are looking for in AfterShot Pro 3.
Thank you and let me know if this answers your question,
Diane

Reh321 - if it fails again, that's it. I'll use it exclusively as a manual camera. I noticed last time it failed I could use any lens in manual mode and it worked fine. I shoot most of the time in manual. It will be interesting how the K70 fares over time.

I got my wife's K50 back about a week ago from the CA repairer. This is the 2nd repair. I'll post after a few months if still working, or sooner if it fails. Have to remember that AA's run low also.Even if I had a variable DC power supply, what could I do if it failed by a couple of tenths of a volt?

Good idea, hopefully this will be the end of it as in some cases, I've been asked the same question. But in general, people don't really want to do searches, they have a problem, they see a response, and off it goes.

Other forums automatically link the threads, much easier.

Thanks to both of you.

I've been receiving mail concerning the aperture block repair for Pentax cameras. I had mine repaired back in Jan. 2017, the repair lasted about 3 months, and now I'm getting a black image on first shot, then it works okay. Turn off and after a couple of minutes, back on, and the same scenario.

I've been asked about the repairer, and I can't recommend him as he's on a learning curve. My K50 was repaired using a second method of repair.

It cost me about $135.00, and costs will go up for more mailing as his year warranty doesn't include mailing. At this time, I figure it's waste of money. It's my wife's camera so I wanted it fixed by a reliable source, unfortunately, he's not
reliable at his time.

He's been doing this type of repair since 9/16, claims to have only a few failures. But I told him he doesn't have enough data to support his stats at this time as who knows how long before others start failing.

Trying other methods of repair doesn't guarantee the repair stat, just complicates it.

So my advise is to find another repair service.

Hope this helps others.

yes, i read that. and also from someone who still had the problem with the batteries. My wife's k50 died when battery was 1/2 power. Problem never changed with a fully charged battery. Also read where a member had the problem, not sure if K 30 or K50, changed lens, and the problem went away.

Moral of the story: if you have this sort of luck, all the power to you. I wish i knew someone who had the AA pack, would like to try it,

Thanks
