Durability of 645D

First shoot with mine it slipped out of the ballhead on my tripod and fell about 5 feet to asphalt. A scuff on the lens hood and a tiny dent in the mode selection ring are the only problems I saw. It has worked flawlessly since then (over 2 years) and the 120 FA lens that was on it has continued to work well also. (I immediately switched to different QD plates on the camera that take advantage of my ballhead's non slip pin. )

Manual Focus Lenses on 645D

I wasn't trying to disparage manual focus lenses. I was answering a question on how well the focus assist worked with manual focus lenses. Personally I use manual focus most of the time, but I like having the option of auto-focus since for some scenes my eyes don't work as well as when I was 18.

I don't have the 150, but the FA 120 is the best Pentax lens I have.

Are you viewing your sharpening changes at 1:1 or higher magnification? They won't show up otherwise. I have no problems seeing changes with 10-15% increase in sharpening on my 645D files with LR 4.

Problems with 645 FA 45-85

I'll try that some more, but it effects both the focus and the zoom ring. The tolerance on the zoom ring seems tighter and I haven't been able to get a piece of paper under it.

Problems with 645 FA 45-85

My 645 FA 45-85 just started acting strange. Both the focus and zoom rings seem harder to turn than usual. The zoom ring function is not smooth, there seems to be a catch as it goes through about 50mm. Also the auto-focus seems jammed. When I press the AF button on my 645D you can hear the motor trying to focus the lens, but it either doesn't move at all, or moves part of the way then stops. I don't recall any specific incident where the lens struck anything, but I was carrying the camera with that lens and the lens hood over my shoulder on a recent hike which is about the time this started happening.

I assume I need to send the lens in for repair. Any suggestions as to a location in the US that deals with this kind of problem? I purchased the lens used and it has worked great up till now. Even with the problems mentioned above it still works great optically if I focus correctly.

Thanks for your help.

Jeff

Curious about burnt out leaf effect

It looks like the little bit of sunlight in the frame is blowing out the highlights on those leaves. Options are to decrease exposure or use a polarizer which should block the reflected light in those highlights on the leaves. When such a small area of the image is involved a quick glance at the histogram may not be sufficient to insure there are no blown highlights.

Focus ring jamming on 45-85 FA

I've not had this problem with my 45-85 FA, but have had it happen while in the field with a Canon wide angle zoom. I was able to slide a small piece of paper between the lens barrel and the ring and move it around enough to get a few pieces of sand out. It worked so well I never had it cleaned when I got home. I just tried that with my 45-85 FA and it's a bit tighter fit, but you still may be able to do it.

Manual Focus Lenses on 645D

This does work on the 645D, but I find it not as helpful as I'd like. It will often beep a bit too soon and continue to say it's in focus a bit too long as I slowly move the focus ring.

WB in RAW just tells the raw conversion software what WB to set by default. You can then change it all you want.

645D: Corrupted DNG Raw Files with Lightroom?

Lightroom 4.1 is available for both Mac and PC. My cards are class 10. Supposedly rated at 20 megs/sec. I doubt you'll see anywhere near close to 95 no matter which card you use.

I shoot PEF and use Lightroom 4.1. I've never seen this issue. I do have a couple of 32GB Transcend cards that seem to work fine. No 64's. I always copy all my images to the computer with a card reader first. Then just add them to the Lightroom Catalog with the import menu.

From Canon to Pentax (yay! or nay?)

I sold my Canon 1Ds Mk III, but fortunately was able to keep the 1D MkIV and lenses. I use it for wildlife and the Pentax for landscapes. The image quality of the Pentax 645D vs. the 1Ds Mk III is certainly better. Whether it's enough of a difference to justify making the switch is up to you. I assume Canon will come up with something with a sensor along the lines of the Nikon D800, so if you're not in a hurry it might pay to wait to see what that is and whether Pentax updates the 645D since it's been out nearly two years now.

645D Slow Shutter Speed NR and really long exposures

I tested my camera. Slow shutter speed noise reduction only effects exposures <= 30 sec. If you take an exposure over 30 sec (using B) it will do a dark frame regardless of the setting.

I was doing some 4-8 min exposures the other night using B. I can confirm the camera does take a similar length dark exposure immediately after. I haven't tried turning it off though, so I'm not sure long exposure noise reduction is on or off. I'll take a look when I get home tonight.

Crop factor of the 645d
Posted By jwjohnson

The crop factor is around .75 - .80 relative to FF 35mm depending on if you are concerned about horizontal or vertical size since the form factor is different. The 300 would behave as a 300 on a full frame 35mm camera, but putting it on the 645D would give you the equivalent of about the 234mm on FF 35mm.

What other format do you bring along for trips??

It all depends on where you are going and what you'll be shooting.

I just got back from Africa. Due to the severe weight limitations on the small planes we flew between safari camps I didn't take my 645D at all. Just my Canon 1DsIII and 1DIV bodies, a 500mm f/4 lens, 1.4 extender, 70-300 L, 70-200 f/2.8 (which I would leave at home if there is a next time) and a 24-70 L.

On the other hand, I'm going to Moab in a couple of weeks and will take the 645D along with all my Pentax lenses and one Canon body with the longer lenses for it just in case any wildlife pops up.

lnorton,

Which version of the eye-fi did you use? In reading the specs it looks like you would have to use the Pro version to have it act as a hotspot.
Thanks,
Jeff

I'm just starting to use my new Pentax 645D. One of the limitations of this camera is the inability to shoot tethered. The Eye-fi card would let me do that. Another great use would be for the time lapse photo series that I take. I currently shoot in small jpeg mode to fit all the on the cards in the camera, but the Eye-fi would allow those images to be stored on the computer. Letting me shoot in raw and shoot longer sequences.
