In my experience USPS determination to pay insurance claims hinges hugely on whether or not they consider the item properly boxed and cushioned.

Here's hoping the box and packaging was per USPS packaging requirements:

QuoteQuote:

General Cushioning Standards

Loose-fill cushioning must overfill the container before closure to hold the item and prevent its movement within the container. When multiple items are inside a single mailing container, mailers must cushion items to protect them from each other as well as from external forces. Do not package high-density heavy items with fragile items unless extreme care is taken to separate them from each other. Mailers must adequately stabilize heavy items within the package.

Either my memory is going, or they've generalized their requirements. I thought I remember them specifying how many inches of cushion material must be in place between the item and the box. But perhaps I'm thinking of UPS or FedEx. At any rate, best of luck! Seeing the damange made me cringe, as I envisioned the same damage to my favorite current lens, my F*300.

Lenses are amazing after Eric serviced them

As with most repairs technical, he's simply taking a prudent approach. With technical repairs of any type of gear, it's best to have a first-hand look at the item before making any statements about what the problem is, whether one can fix it, what it might cost, etc. User descriptions and sample photos typically don't tell a sufficiently complete (or, at times, sufficiently accurate) story, so the only way to know for sure whether or not he may fix it is to have a look first hand.

FWIW, I've dealt with Eric once before and had an excellent experience. Highly recommended. Not affiliated in any way, just a happy customer.

Lens Hood Caps?

For the most part, I've replaced my stock Pentax caps -- both outer-pinch and center-pinch -- with aftermarket, inexpensive center-pinch caps, which I find relatively easy to remove / put back on even with the hoods in place.

On my MF lenses, I have metal screw-on hoods I leave attached pretty much all the time. For these hoods, I have appropriate sized aftermarket caps (same as above), so I don't have to remove the hoods for capping.

Not sure I'd use the PZ features, and I definitely wouldn't want the extra weight / size that might go along with it. For example:

255g | 66 x 66mm | w/o PZ | FA 28-105/3.2-4.5 AL [IF]
515g | 73 x 96mm | w/. PZ | FA 28-105/4-5.6

Granted, PZ isn't the only difference between these two lenses (e.g. optical formula, shell material, etc.) But one of the things I like about my Pentax lenses is they're reasonably small and light weight.

Seriously CRIS? Really?

Sorry to hear about your initial trouble and subsequent hassles. Some recommendations:
  1. Documentation. For your own reference and to support further communications of all kinds, document (briefly) the timelines of critical actions (e.g. all the status updates from the CRIS website, etc.), communications (whether by phone, email, web form, letter, etc.), CRIS / Pentax responses (if any), and CRIS / Pentax commitments and whether or not they followed through. This assists in maintaining a consistent, coherent story line even as you may deal with a variety of people in the course of trying to resolve your issue. The consistent, coherent storyline minimizes the opportunity for customer service to deflect deflect responsibility onto an "unreasonable", "irrational", or "confusing" customer.

  2. Employee Identification. For all communications with CRIS / Pentax, insist on capturing a unique identifier for each employee with whom you engage. Add this to all entries in your documentation, above. In small organizations, first name is often sufficient, other times you might need first name and last name or initial (if they'll give it), and increasingly in larger customer service operations they'll provide an ID number of some kind. To a degree, gathering this information up front, before delving into the specific issue(s), sends the message you intend to hold accountable the individual with whom you're communicating. People don't generally want the hassle of their boss coming down on them for issues they could and should have resolved up front. If they think you'll hold them personally accountable (e.g. by escalating to their boss), they're more likely to deliver than if they think they're an anonymous entity in the customer service ether.

  3. Phone. Skip the emails and web forms. Call CRIS and Pentax on the phone and speak to someone voice-to-voice. Be polite (always), but direct and firm. IME, it's very easy for customer service to dismiss (or neglect) emails and web form submissions. A phone call forces them to deal with you directly and immediately. Sometimes, they'll need to check on things and call you back. Let them. But be diligent and re-contact them if they don't return your call within the timeline to which they commit. If you don't get satisfaction, insist on speaking to the next person in the reporting line (e.g. supervisor, manager, etc.) until you receive (even if only temporary) satisfaction.

  4. Persistence and Timing. Persistence counts, and don't allow too much time to elapse before re-contacting if you're not satisfied with the results (or lack thereof). Customer service should be professional enough that you need not jump through the persistence hoop. But, alas, we don't live in an ideal world, and there's more than enough un-professionaly customer service organizations out there. By not allowing too much time to pass between communications, you inform customer service you're not going away, you're not satisfied, and you consider their response and performance a priority.

  5. Registered Mail. In conjunction with, or in addition to, the above, send a professional business letter via registered mail to both CRIS management and Pentax corporate. The letter should document your experience, express your dissatisfaction, and explicitly indicate how CRIS / Pentax may resolve the situation to your satisfaction. Be polite, be firm, be reasonable, be professional. Send the letter as high up the CRIS management / Pentax corporate chain as possible. No manager worth their salt will let something like this ride. One of the hardest parts in trying to resolve customer service issues like this is finding the right manager who can light a fire on your behalf, and a physical letter via registered mail will often bubble it's way up to the right person who can help you.

It seems you've done in full, or in part, some of these things. Pick and choose which others, if any, you find useful, and give it a go. Best of luck!

Unhappy with my Tamron 28-75 f2.8

Looks to me like focus is on the door frame, behind the subject. Shots like this are difficult for testing purposes because it's not easy to control on what the camera will focus. This result could simply be a matter of the camera choosing to focus on the door frame instead of the subject's face. I've found the focus points are MUCH larger than indicators in the screen, so it's quite easy for this to happen, even if using center-point focus.

I think a more controlled test is in order. Though a bit over-the-top, something like this, perhaps: Jeffrey Friedl's Blog Jeffrey’s Autofocus Test Chart. This will allow you to have 100% confidence the camera focuses on the desired target.

factors to use in k-r camera bag

Some considerations I keep in mind as I've searched for the perfect (i.e. non-existent) camera bag:
  1. Usage: Will it work well for walkaround? Traveling? Hiking?

  2. Carry Type: Backpack, Sling, or Shoulder? (I really only like backpack style bags, even for a small kit and walkaround.)

  3. Volume: Does it carry everything I need (which may vary depending on intended usage)?

  4. Organization: Does it hold the stuff (both camera and non-camera related) I want to carry in a way that makes sense and is usable for me? (I tend to prefer a dedicated non-camera space and lots of smaller pockets and pouches and such rather than big catch-all spaces.)

  5. Access: Can I easily access my gear (obviously also ties into usage and carry type)? (I prefer easy on-the-go access to the camera in-bag for swift removal and return; I'm less concerned about easy on-the-go access to extra gear, like other lenses, flash, etc.)

  6. Protection: Does it offer reasonable protection (padding, weather resistance) for my intended usage?

  7. Quality of Materials / Workmanship: Is it a cheapo bag that will fall apart quickly, or will it prove durable (obviously dependent in part on usage)?

  8. Design / Colors: Do I like the colors and/or does it scream "Expensive Photo Gear Inside!"? (I prefer simple styling, dark or dull colors, minimal branding, understated design.)

  9. Budget: self-explanatory.

So far, the bag that suits my preferences best (but is still far from my "perfect" bag): Lowepro Fastpack 200 / 250, and I'm thinking about a 100 for lighter travel and walkaround.

Heh...at risk of contributing one more lens to the collective answer of "any of them", I quite like my A100/4. It's only 1:2, but that's all I need, so it was a nice, relatively inexpensive alternative to the A100/2.8 and other 1:1 macro lenses.

I find I'm not using this lens much, as I always seem to reach for my A 100 f/2.8. Figured I should pass it on to someone who will put it to good use.

Price is firm and includes ground shipping, insurance, and delivery confirmation to lower-48 contiguous US states. Other destinations and service levels by individual arrangement only.

See bottom section for detailed information on payment, shipping & insurance, returns, etc. If I decide to lower my prices or accept best offers, I'll update this original post.

I posted these a~7 weeks ago, but had to withdraw them due to professional commitments. Now, they're back on the market. Have at 'em...

I picked up an A35/2 a while back, so don't need the A35/2.8 any longer. And I've been meaning to unload my A28/2.8 since I don't really need its FL between my A35 and A24/2.8. So...

Prices are firm and include ground shipping, insurance, and delivery confirmation to lower-48 contiguous US states. Other destinations and service levels by individual arrangement only.

Available | $99 | SMC Pentax-A 28mm f/2.8 w/ Pentax 49mm cap + Pentax rear cap

Original owner: No

Functional Condition: Excellent
Cosmetic Condition: Good

No introduction necessary, here -- just a very nice copy of the well known A28/2.8. While not known as a "special" "pixie-dust" filled lens, nonetheless a solid, steady performer. I find using a hood helps significantly in producing better images with this lens.

Front and rear glass are clean and blemish-free, a wee little bit of dust inside that I have to strain to see (as might be expected in an older lens), aperture blades are clean / oil-free and snappy, aperture ring is well damped and clicks positively into all apertures, focus ring is well damped and smooth throughout the range. Photos of A35/2.8 taken with this lens.

Includes:
  • SMC Pentax-A 28mm f/2.8

  • One of the following:

  • 49mm Pentax front cap

  • Pentax rear cap

Photos of (taken with A35/2.8): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Sold | $155 | SMC Pentax-A 35mm f/2.8 w/ 49mm metal hood + 58mm cap + Pentax rear cap

Original owner: No

Functional Condition: Excellent
Cosmetic Condition: Good

I think the PF lens reviews are spot on about this lens: a somewhat hard to find mighty fine performer!

• Pentax rear cap

Photos of (taken with A28/2.8): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

N/A | $250 | Package price includes...
  • A28/2.8

  • A35/2.8

  • 49mm Pentax lens cap

  • 49mm metal hood

  • 58mm generic center-pinch cap (fits on end of the hood)

  • (2) Pentax rear lens caps

See below for individual prices. Note the 49mm Pentax front lens cap will sell with one lens, the 49mm hood + 58mm center-pinch cap with the other. Doesn't matter to me which goes with which lens.

The difference is clear when cycling fully from infinity to min focus, and back, and it seems at least in part due to longer throw on the Tamron. I wonder if the difference in time from start to focus lock when dealing with shorter throws would become negligible for my intended usage. Alas...only one way to find out: I have to try both.

Thanks for posting, I'm in the process of trying to decide whether to go Sig or Tam for my 70-200/2.8 (and kicking myself for selling my old Sig 70-200/2.8).

Is this noted from first-hand experience with both? Someone else's tests? Curious if there are other tests I may consider as I can't afford to buy both to do my own testing.

If so, how is the insurance claim going?

What a shame to see such a lens all busted up. :(

Poor handling by carriers is one reason I generally way way way over-pack my lenses when shipping. So far, so good (knock on wood & fingers crossed).

Consider whether you really need 1:1. Does 1:2 qualify as "close to 1:1"? If you don't genuinely need 1:1 (I don't), consider the Pentax K, M, or A 100mm f/4 (1:2). The A would probably fall in the ~$200 range, the K and M less.

Are you using a hood? If so, then never mind. But if not, consider using one -- it should help.
