Pentax Demo Event in Edmonton

It was at McBain camera West Edmonton mall where I actually was able to handle a K1. It was cool that they had one in stock to demo. The size was very manageable for a FF but the weight I think will take some getting used to when I finally get one. It made my K5 seem quite small and yes light.

Pro Photog Convert to Pentax K-1 camera review

I had to go to McBain camera while visiting in Edmonton Alberta in order to get a K1 in my hands. It really sold me on a camera I would like to purchase some day. It also gave me a feel for how heavy it is in comparison to its APSC predecessors . I think it was very important to get a feel for this camera. In addition though, brick and mortar stores must be competitively priced with the online offers as was mentioned in a previous post. This may or may not be possible but if those retailers are not competitive, people may just check it out in the store and buy it online.

Poor JPEG quality

I just read the K-1 review posted here on PF. The reviewer I thought gave it quite high marks even on things that other reviewers tend to downgrade like AF and video. What I thought was very interesting in the conclusion under cons was Poor JPEG quality. Now I've heard some reviewers say the JPEGS were okay, not that great, some like them and said the JPEG's were fine. For those of you who own a K-1 or are familiar with it (unlike me) what is your experience of the JPEG quality on the K-1. I hope to get one someday. At present I have a K-5. Most if not all the time I shoot RAW and convert to JPEG so it should not be a big deal right? Still it would be good to know you can get decent JPEGS if needed. I'd be so grateful for anyone's take on this.

Pentax A 24mm 2.8 vs Sigma 24mm 2.8

I am not considering the DA 21mm since my aim is to get a K1. I'm looking for a full frame wide angle lens. But thanks for the suggestion.

Pentax A 24mm 2.8 vs Sigma 24mm 2.8

I am comparing the Pentax A 24mm 2.8 with the Sigma 24mm 2.8 Super Wide. I read the reviews on this forum for each. My post is for the purpose of seeking information on a comparison between the two. Is the Sigma just as compatible with my K-5 for example and what are the strengths and weaknesses of each lens.
I saw both on ebay as I am interested in a wide angle lens. I really want the the FA 20 2.8 but cannot seem to find one for what I can pay for it. Next the A 20 is not coming up very often either so I'm moving down the list to the 24mm.
Thanks.

Pentax A 20mm 2.8 communicating with camera

I am interested in purchasing a pentax A 20mm 2.8 lens. I have the K-5 with hopes of getting a K-1 soon. I have 2 questions.

1. Does the Pentax A 20mm communicate with the camera for example beeps or gives some indication when the subject is in focus.

2. Does anyone have experience using the Pentax A 20mm lens on a K-1 concerning image quality and overall impressions. I have read conflicting views on new lenses being better than the old film lenses on new digital sensors.

Thanks

A forum member on this thread alerted me to a Pentax FA 20mm 2.8 on ricardo.ch.
Pentax SMC-FA 20mm f/2.8 in Fällanden kaufen bei ricardo.ch
It has been listed for a number of weeks now with no bids. While I don't doubt the integrity of the seller, I am hesitant to pursue a purchase from so far away, Switzerland in this case. Anyone have any experience/advice for pursuing this. I am concerned about duty fees, communication, money transfer, etc.
Thanks

I think I'm going with noelpolar's advice. At the current price of the FA 20mm 2.8 (if you can find one that is) I think I will wait to see what pentax comes out with next year. Even though I would prefer the older lens hopefully a new wide angle prime will become available.
Great discussion.

Thanks

So what is focus confirmation. I have never used a manual focus lens before and have rarely set my autofocus lenses on manual. I was experimenting with manual focus on my K-5 with my DFA 50mm. Sometimes the camera beeped when it seemed to be in focus other times not and I'm not sure why that is as the subject seemed in focus each time. Does this mean that when using manual focus you just depend on your eyes through the viewfinder or in live view, to determine whether the subject is in focus or not or should the camera confirm somehow that the subject is in focus. My concern is that I will get a manual focus lens like a Pentax A 20mm 2.8 for reasons we already discussed and often miss the focus.

I know it's rare but how about seems to be nowhere to be bought. Any idea why it seems next to impossible to find a Pentax FA 20mm 2.8 lens? Is everyone saving them for the K-1. I am regretting not getting one when they were more available.
Not a real pressing question just interested in your thoughts.
Thanks.

FF versus mirrorless

I am another one with great expectations for the new FF coming out in the spring (or thereabouts). I presently have a K-5 and all my lenses are FF compatible except for one. Even though we welcome this new addition from pentax it seems that a FF mirrorless is the wave of the future. So why not stick with a perfectly good APS-C and wait for pentax to come out with the FF mirrorless. Obviously we don't know if or even when that may happen but thought I'd throw out there what is going through my mind to get your input. Forgive me if this seems too speculative as I don't mean to start another one of those threads, but just a point for the sake of discussion and the pros and cons of pulling the trigger on a full frame DSLR or waiting for a mirrorless FF. Thanks.

Yes I have used the Wasabi battery from Amazon. I had no problems with it and as far as I can tell lasts as long on a charge as the original pentax battery that came with the camera.
You can also get another charger of the same brand if you desire.

If interested in a 50 mm macro the DFA 2.8 (not terribly fast) is also a good option. Very sharp, very compact and very light. Also going for a good price used and the macro is 1:1.

Lightroom 5 and white balance

I am new to Lightroom 5. At present I am working on a 30 day trial. I have used the white balance dropdown in PSE camera RAW. I see that Lightroom has that same dropdown as well as a dropper that can be placed in various areas of the photo. My question is where is the best place to put the white balance dropper on the photo to get the best results. I realize this probably requires a better understanding of white balance on my part.
Thanks.
