Imaging Resource's CP+2018 interview with Ricoh Imaging

I really want that upcoming APS-C flagship, but it's it's still looking pretty far away.

If the K-1II ends up having more competent AF tracking performance than the K-1, then more than likely the K-3II replacement will have AF performance as good or even better than the K-1II. The upcoming K-1II reviews on here, Imaging-Resource, & DPR will shed some light on the AF performance. You know that DPR will redo that bike test. :p

If the reviews point to much better AF performance in the K-1II, I might end up unloading my K-50 bodies & getting a K-3II to hold me off for a while as I wait for the replacement. That will pretty much mean that I'll be staying with Pentax for the long haul.

Should I upgrade my SFXn to a K70 or a K5 iis?

The K-5IIs is a great camera. I don't think any other Sony, Nikon, or Pentax camera that had that 16MP Sony sensor could pull out as much detail out of it as the K-5IIs.

However, the K-70 takes it even further. Yes. It doesn't have that K-5IIs flagship build, but the other features that it has makes it much more attractive than the K-5IIs. First off, you have KAF4 compatibility. This is something the K-5IIs will most likely never have. The K-70 has a flippy screen, great for getting those low or high angle shots. Selfies too, I guess. :p The IBIS is a tad bit better rated at 4.5 stops versus 3 for the K-5IIs. The viewfinder is a tad bit larger (.95 vs. .92). It has the same exact autofocus system that the K-5IIs has. The K-70 also has an AA simulator, pixel shift, & you can easily set the auto ISO from 100 to 25600 & still get very usable images at ISO 25600. I wouldn't go higher than ISO 12800 on the K-5IIs. The K-70 offers a tremendous amount of bang for the buck. The RAW files will be a bit larger, especially the pixel shift ones, but the end result will be a really awesome image. Attach a very good DA* or Limited lens to that body & you'll get some spectacular images.

Don't get me wrong. The K-5IIs is still one very good camera, but I'd take a K-70 over it. Funny thing is that I would take a K-3II over a K-70, even though the high ISO image quality is not as good as the K-70 nor the K-5IIs. I'd be getting a K-3II more for the the build, performance, & speed of it.

そうですか? :p

There are going to be a few that are not going to be able to wait. Some aggressive discounts on old bodies like the K-3II ;) & some lenses would probably keep them here for a while. Hahaha! :D

^ Ah! That you will need to set that in the preferences. Download the zip & extract the PP3 file that I have attached to this post to the same location as the ones in the image. Then open up RawTherapee & go the preferences, which is that tiny little icon on the lower left hand side. A new window will appear. Click on the Image Processing tab. Where it reads "Default Processing Profile - For raw photos:", navigate to that PP3 file (Auto-Matched Curve - 0 Edits). It's basically the Neutral processing profile with the auto-tone match enabled. Nothing else is enabled, but this will give you an idea of what the file looks with the default tone curve, but no noise reduction or anything else added to it. Then you select the proper processing profile according to the ISO & go from there.

UPDATE!

This is my newest set of PP3 files. There are some NR tweaks & other stuff. They're making good use of the auto-match tone curve. Once again, you need RawTherapee 5.4 to use of them.

You can always browse the attachment thread for older PP3 files. Just click HERE to browse through all the attachments.

Try them out & let me know what you think.

K3 vs A6500, to switch or not to switch

I know the feeling. It's hard trying to photograph a fidgety toddler that can't seem to ever sit still. Sony has some pretty amazing tech.

You Tube

^ That's Eye AF on the A6300, which will perform the same exact way on the A6500. It seems like the recent A9 & recent A7 series is pushing the Eye AF even further. Try keeping that kind of eye focus on a Pentax. :p

The only downside with Sony APS-C E-mount is the lack of really decent APS-C lenses. The full frame has more, but they are pricey. Panasonic also has a similar eye focus & I think Olympus does too, but I don't think they're as fast as the Sony.

UPDATE!

I've uploaded some experimental PP3 files. They have some major noise reduction & wavelet tweaks. Colors come out a bit more vibrant. They do have the auto-matched curve tone in them. The style defaults to film-like. You can manually switch the tone curve to standard if you want to get more saturation.

You can always browse the attachment thread for older PP3 files. Just click HERE to browse through all the attachments.

You need to have RawTherapee 5.4 for these to work. Try them out & let me know what you think.

UPDATE!

As noted in another thread, RawTherapee 5.4 is out. My favorite thing now is the automatic tone curve that gets very close to the camera's jpeg brightness. That is a major step forward. Less hassles & no more second guessing the tone curve. This means that all my future PP3 files will now work with any camera you desire. Doesn't matter if it's a Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax, Samsung, APS-C, full frame, m43, 1" or whatever. It will figure out the closest "correct" tone curve automatically. You can either keep the same exposure, reduce it a bit, or overexpose it a bit. Heck, if you're not happy with the automatic tone curve, you can modify the tone curve or even apply your own tone curve as well.

If you haven't downloaded 5.4, you can get it by clicking HERE.

So with that in mind, I have also uploaded a new set of PP3 files that will make good use of that automatic tone curve. There are some other noise reduction settings & stuff that I have changed since the last time. Mind you that these PP3 files are meant to be used with RawTherapee 5.4. Your image will look "flat" if you use an earlier version of RawTherapee.

You can always browse the attachment thread for older PP3 files. Just click HERE to browse through all the attachemnts.

Have fun!

I must admit that Sony, Panasonic, & Olympus are tempting me with their recent cameras & lenses. They're making it hard for me to resist the urge of unloading my Pentax gear & jumping ship, but I'm dead set on waiting for that K-3II replacement & I won't be buying anything until it comes out. I have a feeling that it's going to take a decent leap in AF performance. Not like a Nikon D500 or Canon 7D Mark II type of leap in AF performance, but something that will have much better AF tracking & single point shooting than anything Pentax currently offers & I'll dare say that the AF performance will probably be better than what the K-1II will offer. Something tells me that the Pentax DA 55-300mm PLM lens & whatever other fast focusing lenses that will eventually come out are going to fly on that body.

I'm really looking forward to it. Even if it turns out to be a dud, which I highly doubt, I'll win either way. A lot of other manufacturers already have some pretty great cameras & lenses out right now & I can only imagine they will bring in 2019 or even 2020, so I'll get to pick whatever I think will work out better for me. It's like a win-win for me.

As for now, I'm doing fine with my K-50 bodies & 5 lenses. Hopefully those bodies can make it until then. I already had to replace the aperture motor in my black K-50.

So who else is dead set on waiting for that K-3II replacement?

Or has the "grass started looking more greener" for you elsewhere? Hmmm....

Indeed. I'd be willing to spend more money & get the Pentax DA 16-85mm DC over the cheaper DA 18-270mm any day. You'll probably end up being disappointed by that 18-270mm lens.

There is also the constant aperture Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 lens. It's not weather sealed, but it's definitely a steal at $369.

Replacing my K-x

I'd say that a brand spanking new $595 K-70 is leaps & bounds better in features, performance, & image quality over the K-x without it costing so much. A KP or a K-3II might be overkill for you at the moment you'd ne out at least $829 for the K-3II body or $897 for a KP.

It seems like all future Pentax bodies are heading that way. As it is, the engineers have already been "cooking" the RAW files since the K10D.

Photographic Dynamic Range versus ISO Setting

^ You can see there.

I'd also prefer ZERO noise reduction in my RAW files, but I'd actually be OK if they "cook" them properly like they do in the KP.

But yeah. If they had an ON/OFF switch for that, it would be great.

If you're good at taking things apart & have a small soldering iron, you can fix the K-30 for now by replacing the "green" aperture motor with a "white" aperture motor. Just go to this thread for more information. There are many other fixes like filing the aperture horseshoe & junk, but the only proven permanent solution so far is to replace the faulty aperture motor.

If that's too much hassle for you, there's nothing wrong with getting a K-3II for now. Chances are that it's going to be a long while before the K-3II replacement appears. Adorama has the K-3II with the battery grip for only $829. That's probably the best deal at the moment. The battery grip alone costs about $219. A slightly cheaper K-70 could also hold you off for a while too. It's basically an updated K-5IIs, but without the "pro" build.

I suggest you pick up a KP to see if you like the ergonomics before making the choice. I had a chance to play with one at Bic Camera in Japan & I really didn't like the way it felt in my hands. I could probably get used to it, but I much prefer the way my K-50 fits in my hands.

But yeah, out of all the Pentax APS-C bodies ever made, the KP has the best image quality hands down. The K-70 is a very close second. The K-3II still offers a ton of bang for the buck & it's built like a tank. I would still pick a K-3II over a KP or a K-70.

If they officially issue some kind of statement about the aperture motor issue, then they recognize that there was an issue with that & a gigantic can of worms will be opened with customers trying to get their camera fixed or refunded.

Till today, according to Ricoh, "no issues with the K-30/50/S1/S2."
