I bought myself a K30 for my birthday in early December to replace my pair of K10s, and my wife surprised me with the double-A battery adapter and the 40mm f2.8 lens as well as a 16gig card for Christmas.

*PETITION* Lets put an end to the crazy online Pentax lens prices in the US!

Count me in. I was one of the lucky ones that got the 50-135 before the price doubled. I can't afford to replace it if it breaks. The Tamron 70-200 f2.8 is half the price of the 50-135.

Good advice Rico and I am in awe of your collection and thrifty methods of aquisition. I would probably go nuts with that many lenses and then trying to figure out which one to use when.

Twitch, I had not yet considered the DA15, but it's an option so is a 12-20 to have the range. I really wish there was someplace that I could actually put my hands on these lenses and try them it would really help making decisions.

Rio you remind me of the presenter at a seminar I attended last year. He told everyone when it comes to glass you need them ALL, so morgage the house and tell the spouse of the absolute necessity to sanity and quality of life to have that much glass. :)

Thanks for the feedback. As with anyone else the budget for my toys is limited so I really have to think about what I spend and what to buy. Now I can let this go and think about trading in the 50-135 for the Sigma 70-210.

I have 2 K10's and an original *istD and while I'd love to get a K5 I just can't justify the cost of a new body, when I'm still satisfied with the quality of the images I'm getting with my K10's. One thing that I am shocked by is the skyrocketing cost of lenses. I am so glad that I filled out my kit when I did I couldn't afford to buy them now.

Nice pictures. I also love my 50-135, not only is it great for almost any indoor situations but the size is perfect and doesn't scare anyone off.

K10 Weather Sealing

lloydy, you are a far braver man than I am. I don't think I would have even considered bringing my K10 where there was that much mud or such a high risk of getting it submerged. After your experiences though I think I'll probably more inclined to take it to places I would not have considered in the past.
Thanks for sharing

Any Connecticut Pentaxians able to help me out?

Hi Jake,

The store is really doing well they moved to their present location from Willimantic a few years ago and have been steadily growing. They used to carry some Pentax 3rd party stuff. I found my Tamron teleconverter there, they were getting ready to eBay it when I bought it.

I wouldn't mind letting you try the 135-400, it's a little heavy but takes great photos. I'm not sure Sigma makes it anymore but I'm sure there are some used ones out there.

Hi Jake,

I'm also in Connecticut up in the Mystic area. If I had any of the lenses on your list I would be more than happy to let you try them out. I've found though that with my 50-135 and my 135-400 I can cover almost anything. While the 50-135 is short for some things it is fast and cropping hasn't been much of an issue. These days I shoot most of my action shots on the beach while the kids are boogie boarding, though I've used it for baseball and some track/field events, but in thos instances I was able to get closer.

BBear thanks for the tip on the Newington group. I attend a local group in Waterford the South Eastern Connecticut Camera Club . I'm in the same boat you are, I'm the only Pentax user in the club and their focus is on competition rather than learning about photograpic technique.

There is a really nice camera store in Colchester that schedules great seminars and events. I try not to hold it against them that they don't sell Pentax though. The list of upcoming sessions is on their site. Photo Connection of Colchester

For the record I would be interested in getting together with other CT Pentax users.

K10 Weather Sealing

Hi Mickey, Great shot. The one thing I wish I had with me was an extra towel, I certainly could have used it. I was wearing a poncho so when I had to wait for walkers I simply kept my K10 under the poncho to keep the rain off as much as possible. I did find that the sun shade did a great job of keeping water off the front of the lens which would have been a real issue as the day wore on.

I didn't worry about the 50-135 since it's sealed but I was concerned about the 70 and the 50 but they held up just fine.

How does your K10 handle the mud of off-roading? I would be more worried about that than the rain.

Ash, While the 70 and 50 aren't weather sealed they did a fantastic job and don't seem to be any worse off. I did make sure to dry everything off as soon as I could while moving from point to point.

K10 Weather Sealing

My wife and I volunteer with the Teri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation here in Connecticut and on October 3rd we held our annual 26.2 Mile walk to raise money for research. One of the things I like about the foundation is that ALL money raised through donations goes directly to researchers working on finding a cure. To date we have raised over 1 Million dollars.

I volunteer as the photographer for all of the foundation events, and on the day of the walk I had the chance to find out just how weather sealed the K10 really is. I was outside from 5:30 am to just after 5 pm in the afternoon covering the event. The only time I was inside was when I was in my car, with my wife (she chauffeured me around all day) driving to the next point in the walk where I needed to be. I walked about 5 to 6 miles because in many cases I had to be dropped off and then walk to where the walkers would pass by, some of the route went through state parks, beaches and wooded areas. The only rain gear I had was a poncho. I shot the entire event with 2 K10Ds, my 50-135, 70mm and 50 1.4. At one point I was standing on the Baldwin Bridge in Old Saybrook in a downpour while shooting. I have to say that the K10s held up tremendously. I dried them off with a towel when moving from point to point but they were out in the rain as often as I was. At the beginning of the day I was worried about all the rain ruining the camera but after a while I stopped worrying and just kept shooting. I did make sure to only change memory cards while under cover and then only after drying the body off. Overall I can testify to how well the K10 is weather sealed and would not hesitate to walk outside in a rainstorm to shoot again.

The day was a lot of fun we had over 400 walkers and 100+ volunteers manning all the rest stops, checkpoints, etc.

Sent my 50-135 back today...SDM failure.

My 50-135 failed on me within the first year as well. I contacted Pentax support and they asked me to send it right in. The nice thing was that instead of repairing the lens, they sent me a brand new one with a new one year warranty. I'm not sure how you bought your lens, but some credit card companies extend your warranty for a year on any product you buy using their card.

My dad and I have been discussing the new K7 but for what we shoot it's not an upgrade either of us are planning in the near future. Until he sent me the K10 I was planning on buying a K20 and still may within a year.

I think my dad does browse the forums, in fact he's the one that told me about this one. He may even have made an account here, but I haven't seen him post.

Loving the Upgrades

My 72 year old father recently decided to go out and buy himself a K20. I loved his reasoning for it, I'm 72 years old, what am I waiting for??. Now he already has the original *iSTD and the K10D. He traded the *iSTD into Adorama when he ordered the K20 and they only gave him $75 for it, which I think was a little cheap. After having the K20 for a few days, which he is loving every minute of, I get an email telling me that since he won't be needing the K10 anymore he's sending it to me, and oh by the way here is the UPS tracking number.

I recived the "new" K10 on Friday and the body is in fabulous condition, but then I knew it would be. There are under 20K activations on it so there is a lot of life left in the camera.

The next time I hear someone complain about getting a hand-me-down I can smile and say that sometimes that's not to bad. :D

Sticky: About our Marketplace: Gaining Access

I think what Adam is doing makes a lot of sense. As a forum member I have been fortunate enough to have access to a vast wealth of not only knowledge of Pentax equipment but also of Photography in general. I have been neglegent in sending in a donation, which I plan to rectify shortly. If you consider what it would cost to learn some of the information we get here for free you can easily see for yourself what a bargin you are getting.

Having been the photographer for a volunteer organization I understand all of the requirements and work that go into maintaining a web site. Running a site like this forum which is superior to even the user forums I participate in that are run by software companies, takes a tremendous amount of effort, time and MONEY. The cost of server space alone can quickly creep up on you. Every time we post pictures or another short post we take up space. Adam has done a wonderful job of providing all of us with a great resource for Free and only requests donations. Asking for a 10$ donation to post something for sale in the marketplace is not an unreasonable request. Adam could just as easily tell everyone that in order to be a member of the Forum you have to pay 10$ per year. Which would you prefer?

I had a similiar experience recently with my 50-135 after it sat for most of the winter. In my case cleaning the contacts and remounting did not work. While it focused fine in manual mode the auto-focus no longer worked. I sent it back to Pentax and instead of repairing it they just replaced it for me. The new lens works really well so far.

I know that we have lots of pictures of cats, kids, flowers, etc, but when you have a new lens (or toy as my wife calls it) you shoot what's in front of you. My cats are one of my favorite subjects just because they have such great personalities. Here are a few that were fun.

Pirate (under the blanket) isn't the brightest and Pudge (with fish) looks like she's about to eat my son's fish Leanard for lunch

I got lucky yesterday, and found an FA35 in the used listings at Adorama, I couldn't get my order in fast enough. The shipping confirmation came in today so hopefully I'll get it by the end of the week.

I was reading the reviews on the Sigma 30 and it looked really nice, but it was a lot bigger than the FA35, which was leading me to consider the DA35 although it was a little more expensive the size was right.

I got lucky farsisa, I got a bonus a little over a week ago and instead of going right out and buying the FA35 I was trying to decide it and the 40mm over in a different thread, in the meantime Pentax went and discontinued the lens. Gotta love it when things go your way though.

I'm focusing on getting the lenses on my "wish list" before upgrading the body again. I'm shooting with my K10 and have the *istD as backup. In the last year I've manged to pick up the following

50-135
50 1.4
70 2.4
FA 35 (just ordered today :))

I still have the 21 on my list but after that I'm not sure what else I can legitimatly justify to my wife.
