5. Never set your camera on a table or counter with the neck strap hanging over the edge. (Especially if you have cats in the house.)

Late vote here for the Crumpler 4 Million Dollar Home. Great little comfortable and non-photo-looking shoulder bag that holds my KP with up to four Limited lenses and an assortment of other useful stuff.

Two Questions about the K-1 II

I believe that the dominant theory, supported by Bill Claff's analysis, is that baked-in noise reduction in the K-1 doesn't kick in until around ISO 640.

K3 II vs KP

Yep, what everyone else said. I switched over from a K-5IIs (tried the K-3II and was unconvinced) after renting the KP not once but twice and having it gradually grow on me.

It's a fun, small, tough and quick (at least by Pentax standards) camera that is at its very best with the Limited lenses. It works better for fine art/street photography than sports and speedy birds in flight.

Rumor has it a new flagship crop Pentax body is on the drawing board....

Thanks, K1N8. This page, though, discusses custom image settings, which you can access on page 1 of the camera menu. Unless I'm missing something it doesn't explain the clarity or skin-tone feature, which appear on page 3 of the camera menu. The skin-tone correction seems to apply changes only to the face area of a photo.

Are they useful? I have to admit I only just discovered those features on my KP. Having realized the JPGs it produces are really good, I'd like to fully explore the more-arcane controls built into the camera.

Would love to hear how anyone else is using them. Also, what little documentation I've been able to find from Ricoh is a little impenetrable. I think they apply to in-camera JPGs only, right? And what is the face detection that the skin tone correction uses?

Just sign me,

Confused in Oregon

Travelling with primes

I nearly always travel with a KP and 3-Limited kit, consisting of 15, 21 and 70mm primes. As I'm a newspaper editor and writer, I usually take the same kit to work and sometimes use it on the job, but more often for fun. The DA* zooms are reserved for rainy day hikes, for the most part.

Welcome to one of the most-underrated cameras on the market. Looks like you got it for a decent price, too.

I had a hard time, in the beginning, making the transition from the K-5IIs. But then I started looking at the files the KP produced.

Now I own two.

I've shot with it as a rental. Lovely photos, but the camera is not fast, in any sense, and new, digital-optimized lenses are spendy. Be sure you like slow photography!

Anyone Using the KP with the 300/4 lens?

Yes, the KP plus the 300 DA* is a winning combo. I use it hand-held all the time, and don't worry about the grip, as even the small one is fine. And haven't felt the urge to spend $230 on the battery grip, as I finally decided I can swap out the small batteries as needed.

Best or most-interesting old manual Pentax lenses to use on a crop body?

Photoptimist: Hmmmm. Hadn't thought of a shift lens, but that could be a lot of fun.

Luftfluss: Those photos pretty much sell the A-400. I may end up spending more money on this thread than I expected ;)

Thanks!

Best or most-interesting old manual Pentax lenses to use on a crop body?

The subject line says it all. I'm resisting the urge to buy a K-1 to go with my KP(s), and am curious whether any of the old Taks or Ms or As are especially good on a modern crop Pentax body. Of the few I have, I like the Tak 135/2.5 the best, followed by the 645 A* 300/4.

Could also entertain recommendations for other higher-end manual lenses. Leica R, anyone? Zeiss?

Do heavier cameras help with reduced vibration?

I've actually played around experimentally with this question.

After I bought a Canon 1Ds a few years back I noticed that the massive body seemed to be far more stable for hand holding than my smaller Canon or Pentax bodies.

So I tried bolting a 5-pound weight plate (as in weight lifting) to the tripod mount on the bottom of a couple small bodies.

To tell you the truth, I couldn't determine that it made any difference at all.

I suspect a greater factor is how well the mirror and shutter mechanism are damped in a body. The 1Ds is probably pretty well designed in that regard.

That said, I didn't shoot a whole lot of photos, and might have learned more if I had.

Yeah, Colton's got it. I live in western Oregon, so always think of it as the Sunny f/11 rule. Or, some days, more like f/5.6. The nice thing about digital is you can check right away and retake the photo if need be.

Interesting article, Norm. and probably spot on about forum discussions.

One aspect it doesn't mention is that the economic architecture of the web -- the fact that companies can get rich off of high hit rates -- further encourages argument and division. This doesn't really lead to intelligent discourse.

What lenses do you use on your KP?

I've just been reading a similar thread in the K-1 section here, and thought it would be interesting to hear from other people who shoot with the little Pentax wonder.

For me, I'm increasingly addicted to the Limiteds. So the small bag I carry for day to day shooting (a Crumpler Four Million Dollar Home) generally holds the 15, 21 and 70 DA Limiteds and the 43 FA Limited, in addition to my KP. Sometimes I swap in the DA 50/1.8.

When hiking in bad weather (which is most of the time in Oregon) I carry a small Lowepro backpack with two KP bodies and a range of DA* lenses: 16-50, 50-135 and 300, along with the DA 12-24. All but the last are weatherproof.

I have a few legacy manual focus lenses, including a couple 135s and 50s and an M28/2.8, but seldom use them.
