You only get prints up to 20 x 30 cm? Then the K5 you currently already has better definition than you need.
I've had good 40 x 60 cm prints from my K5 when using decent lenses, and some at 50 x 75 cm that look pretty good too, so you are not yet using the K5 to its full potential.

Or, if you have the funds, get a K1 and continue with your 20 x 30 cm prints whilst owning a camera body that should allow you to get decent 50 x 75 cm prints, and probably much larger, when used with a decent lens.

If you stick with 20 x 30 cm prints. I'd keep the K5 and spend the money on decent lenses.

Southern Railway 'Merchant Navy' class passenger locomotive 35006 'Peninsular & Oriental S.N. Co' built in 1941 with 'streamlined' casing which was later removed. The locomotive has now been restored to its condition after the streamline casing was removed, and currently operates on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway in England.

The locomotive was moving slowly towards me.

I love images like this - somebody has thought carefully about where to stand and get the exposure correct (the second only applies if manual exposure). Where was this taken?

My nomination for this month's competition.

I am glad to see manual exposure and white balance - I ignore entries made with automated settings.

I found a used Sigma 17-70 F2.8 - F4 in mint condition (like new, boxed) for 150 in the UK, compared with 330 for the current F2.8 - F4 model.
Using it on a K5 body, I have been impressed at all focal lengths, especially when used around F8 (as I would expect).
It's also light and compact, and I replaced the petal hood with a cheap folding/collapsing rubber hood to allow a deeper hood at 70mm.

If you don't want a zoom, but prefer something with a larger aperture, look for a used Sigma 30mm F1.4 - less versatile, but very good image quality.
I found perfect condition used one for 200 in the UK, compared with 300 new.

Don't rush to buy a NEW lens - I have only purchased one lens new in the last 20 years, which was a Tamron 18-250 mm bundled with a K10 body when these were sold off as discontinued models. The Sigma 17-70 is better, but obviously more limited in range.

Also consider the Sigma 17-70 F2.8 - F4.

New K-5 firmware version 1.16

Thank you - I have now checked the correct details for the K5 updates using the link you supplied.

Some of my original comments still apply - there are too many occurrences of 'Improved stability for general performance', and the specific hardware mentioned is not relevant for me.

So noting the problems some other members have had, I will stick with 1.01.

I tried to upload 2 images to accompany my review (both 900 pixels maximum dimension, as per my gallery images), but could not see how to load them so that they appear with the text. Is this something being ironed out?

New K-5 firmware version 1.16

Thank you 'woodworm' for your helpful advice - this tells me I have version 1.01 on my K5.

I have just checked all the index entries for 'menu' K5 operations manual, and none of them explain this.
Also, there are no index entries for 'firmware' or 'software'...

I have now found and used links from the Forum website to find the K5 Firmware update history on the Ricoh Pentax website
Latest K-5II/K-5IIs Firmware Update : Software Downloads | RICOH IMAGING

If this is complete, and not being aware of any problems with 'stability' (what a wonderfully vague term), I suspect I can safely stay with 1.01.
Some of the updates are to fix problems with earlier updates - I worked in computer programming for 20 years, and recognise the symptoms of 'fix and hope' whch is cheaper and quicker than 'fix and test before release'.

How do I check version currently installed in K5 body purchased in July 2013?
I have searched the operating manual and either I have missed it or it's not in there.

Also, how can I get a helpful list of all the functions I will gain (or have to re-learn) by updating the software?

I am definitely one of those 'if it's not broken don't fix it people', so would have to be sure I am going to get something I need or want before doing any update. Since I don't use the video functions, and only the manual and 'TAV' exposure settings, it is possible that updates only relate to functions I do not use.
