And everyone should take a deep breath and think about what Mike has said. Preferably after taking a good look at his photographs. Maybe his is not the artistic direction for you, but you can't look at his images and suggest that they aren't excellent in their own milieu. The Z isn't limiting me either. Rather the reverse!

Two Questions about the K-1 II

I second that. Which is why I am not angsty about the K1mkII, and got my K1 upgraded with a light heart. I have special use cases for my cameras, and the role my K1U2 serves is compatible with what Bill Claff found. When I need higher iso's, my use case is such that it's the noise that is the problem, and it's great that it is reduced in raw OOC. I am using my K1U2 a lot professionally in a museum setting, where I cannot use flash, and in situation where I cannot use a tripod. With a tripod, I can go to slow shutter speeds, or else I'm using my Z.

K1 in print test

Of course testing specs, & etc are positive things. This post doesn't suggest otherwise.

But a very significant thing happened to me when I saw my first good inkjet prints on matte, rag paper: I loved them.

I was accustomed to using silver rich, graded papers (from the old Zone VI studios), and then another batch from some small Hungarian seller. But those disappeared and I was left with Oriental Seagull and Ilford, which were not as good by a lot. Obviously all this was B&W. I hated matte papers, didn't much care for lustre.

With inkjet, that all changed instantly. Because inkjet is...ink on paper. So, it was right in my wheelhouse as someone who has done etchings, aquatints, mezzotints, & etc. Now I don't care so much for glossy digital prints, and prefer matte. Not the least reason being the lack of reflections.

Personally, I feel that digital is a different medium than film, and one's expectations should not be couched in a comparison with film and wet prints. Just as one shouldn't understand Japanese whiskies as poor relatives of Scotch from Scotland. Each is its own thing.

In color, I always thought that most wet color prints were sort of ugly, except those that went the extra mile to actually be ugly, and so achieved "ugly beauty", jolie laide.
To me, color digital far exceeds most wet color prints I've ever seen, with very few exceptions---and I'm willing to bet that if these were reprinted digitally I'd like them better that way.

Again, this is not to take away from the fine research and writing above. It's just a cautionary note. Ultimately, the print needs to live as its own object. Get it to look the way you want it to look, or it needs to look.

Absolutely. They're on my boycott list. At the very least I'd like to know, from them, why. If it's about money, specifically paid from the manufacturers to support the cameras, then I get it. Pay to play. If it's about something Pentax did/failed to do, I'd like to know what that is/was.

FTR, I was an Adobe h8r until a few years ago. And although many have excoriated them for their rentals, I think it's actually viable. I also think that LR has been well priced for some time, back into the days when it could be bought outright (I always thought PS was ridiculously overpriced).

Based on all of your comments in this thread, I think you are just too angst-y about what future moves Pentax may make. If the future health of the company is really a driving factor for you, then really there's only 3.75 companies you should be buying from: Sony, Fuji, and Canon, in that order, with .5 being Panasonic and .25 being Leica. The first 3 are such big companies that they are less likely to fail (although Canon sure seems to want to...). Panny is also a very large company, and likely to keep the imaging division going for other reasons. Leica will survive as a luxury brand---there's nothing rational about luxury.

And this is I think the big hint at what Pentax's ultimate goal is: "FF 645". Because all but a couple of the lenses cover FF 645, including newly designed ones, I think this is where they want to go. I doubt they are doing this to keep legacy film body users happy---otherwise they would be keeping that line alive. The only other thing I can think is that with the D they designed the body so that the older lenses would work, to bring the film body users forward, and that designing new lenses along those lines just wound up being the easier path.

100MP Sensor released

Good point. I could use the rez, but we're getting close to a point where I might not need more.

Again, a good point. IBIS is something I'd be willing to forgo. It's helpful on my FF camera for events shooting---even though the shutter speeds it helps with aren't optimum for events, but Collections Management frowns on flash in the galleries. With my Z, I'm more inclined to use a tripod for serious work, or flash if hand held. Also, a new , higher rez sensor will show defects of technique more, and I wonder how much benefit IBIS will give.

Your arguments for new lenses become stronger with this new sensor. I would still rather have it than not (perfect is the enemy of the good reasoning), but lens deficiencies will rob more goodness out of this sensor than the current one, probably. But maybe the net gain even with lesser lenses would still make the jump up worthwhile....

Yes, they have certainly thrown smaller and lighter out the window with this one. But I always thought that argument a bit of a canard. The form factor seems to be aimed at pro FF DSLR shooters who haven't yet made the leap to a larger format. It looks awkward to me, but I have used battery grips and been ok with them.

100MP Sensor released

Well, I'd say 2 things. There's room in that Z box. The K1 managed both Ibis and PS with a 36mp sensor and the standard battery in one of the most compact FF OVF bodies out there. My battery life in that camera is pretty good. The point is well taken about the additional processing power required, but my Z's battery life is now excellent, so a drop to OK wouldn't bother me too much. And I'm not sure that the 90's OIS had much to do with heat----I think Pentax felt they needed to offer a stabilized alternative and that was the quickest way to go about it.

To the other point, I think that the Z's output is quite excellent and truly sufficient for so many purposes. But for certain things, and upgrade would be desirable, and those certain things happen to be things I do professionally and personally. But they are special cases, and in that rarified realm of such.

For me, it would be a tough call if it was an either or situation: "FF 645" at 100mp, no IBIS or PS, or "crop 645" at 100mp with IBIS and PS. Very tough call.....

Several pertinent things:
  • They could use this new sensor in their Z body w/o body mods

  • Pentax has IBIS tech, and room in the Z body for it, no body mods necessary

  • Pentax has PS tech

  • With this camera, Fuji has no size advantage!

  • Pentax remains ready to make the jump to "FF 645"; Fuji is not---they are all-in with "crop" 645.

  • Pentax has already been doing some re-releases of their lens line downstream. No, they are not total re-designs, but they are new production with new coatings. So, that's something they could translate upwards to the 645 line.

  • In the downstream lines, a couple of very good new lenses have been released. No, it's not a dozen new ones, but the ones that have come are very good, and there are a couple more on the horizon. It's not like they have forgotten how to make good lenses, so I have hope for 645 (please re-do the 45!)

So, I'm guardedly optimistic. I think their stated (in 2 interviews from CP+) wait and see on 645, but still committed, is sensible for Pentax. When David faced off with Goliath, I'll bet he waited to take his best shot....

Recently I have been using the 24-70 and 15-30 for some event stuff. Very handy. The 24-70 is the workhorse here, but the 15-30 sometimes is the necessary lens.

Still like the FA 20, 35, 50 macro, 100 macro. Haven't been using the 28-105 much lately, and still need to work out my 31 and 77. Hope to get my 28's going as well. Trouble is, it's all backup to my Z....that is what I reach for first if it's not an event or a run and gun documentation.

And that's not even mentioning the haptics and ergonomics, which will still stink no matter how good the lens and sensor. It ignores the input of the photographer, which is pretty huge IMO.

I agree with so much of what you've said.....except I think I am guardedly hopeful about Pentax. I think it's possible that their conservatism---which we all rail against to a greater or lesser degree---might just be a boon in a downturn as the company might not be so overextended by over-reaching.

Samy's is one of the good'uns for sure. Yes, this is why it pays to have a relationship with your local pro shop. Too bad mine doesn't do Pentax! They were all Canon-Nikon (plus a little Leica) while I was Oly and Sony, then as soon as I moved to Pentax they got hot into Sony! I like 'em anyway.
