Ricoh GRD (any flavour): come on down!

Actually, I completely agree. Even with large(r) sensor cameras becoming more compact by the day, I still couldn't part with my GRDIII as it's truly pocketable and delivers incredible IQ even at higher ISO. The black/white is particularly appealing I think. There's something about the way Ricoh process b/w. And I can't stress enough the advantage of being able to customize literally pretty much any button or dial on this camera. In terms of operation, the GRD blows pretty much any camera out of the water. Again, I'm really surprised there aren't more users in the Pentax community. Having used this for quite a while now, I think the Ricoh-Pentax merger makes a lot of sense now as the two brands have a lot in common in terms of design philosophy. Below are some random examples. I have a whole lot of street shots and shots of people but I can't really post those. Sorry about the orientation in #1 and #4 btw. Never really understood why jpeg's always end up in horizontal orientation when posted online...??

Btw, may I ask what issues with the GRDIV you are referring to? Haven't really been following that one although I would consider upgrading at some point for the benefit of quicker AF, which I guess is pretty much the GRDIII's only relative weakness (although perfectly fine).

Clearly one of the most underrated cameras and probably the best compact on the market. The level of customizability (is that even a word?) gives any pro-level DSLR a run for its money (even the otherwise excellent K-5). Built quality is amazing. Wonderful lens, too. I have the GRDIII and consider it THE compact backup for Pentax users.

Suggestion for which lens to bring to Japan

I travelled Japan with only a K-m, the 40mm Voigtländer, the 21mm Limited and the 10-17mm Fisheye and shot the best photos of my life. Would recommend this combination to anyone any time. There was never a moment I thought I was under equipped. In fact, 50mm would be WAY too limiting if not even useless for me. On the other hand, 40mm is an incredibly versatile focal length. Even more so than 21mm actually.

Just found this terrific example of the K5's capabilities in this field. I find the result remarkable, considering that the kit lens was used! Can't wait to give this a try with a Limited lens or two :)

Some people have claimed that this is a feature, not a bug. Personally, I find that very hard to believe.

Shutter count - which number to believe?

JonPB: thanks for the advice. I did format the card but the file naming did not change.

pxpaulx: I use Mac OS so that software is not an option for me unfortunately. I used myshuttercount.com though, which seems like a valid tool as well.

Shutter count - which number to believe?

I received my new K-5 today (yay!) and after just two shots noticed that the last jpeg was named "IMGP4617.jpg". Suspicious that the camera may already have several thousand actuations on it I checked the shutter count via EXIF readout and the software counted 5 shutter actuations.

Now I'm not sure what to believe. If the camera really has had 5 shutter actuations then why does jpg numbering start at 4600-something? The seal of the allegedly new box was already broken and while this on its own doesn't really bother me, I wouldn't accept a camera as new with that high of a shutter count...

Is shutter count via EXIF-readout reliable enough in this case? Or could it have been reset?

The 15mm Limited controls my mind - club

You're welcome :)

I'm pretty sure that 99% of all sharpness-related complaints about this lens can be attributed to its focussing behaviour on Pentax bodies. If Pentax addressed this with a firmware update, the "problem" would be pretty much solved. Not sure how this can be communicated to them, though.

By the way, I'd like to add that the lens is perfectly sharp at any resolution other than 100%. The problem is actually the pixel peeping, I'm afraid.

That old discussion about sharpness again, ey?

I'll add my observations about this lens then, after having used this extensively during my summer vacation:

- center sharpness is excellent, even wide open;
- sharpness drops rather quickly towards the corners, reaching a rather mediocre level unless stepped down to F8;
- when focussing at infinity, autofocus tends to focus to a range near the proximal hyperfocal limit and then confirms focus. However, sharpness appears to be lower this way than focussing manually to infinity. I tried this when shooting landscapes and images turn out much sharper, even in the corners, when focussing manually.

In other words, sharpness within a given focus zone seems to drop noticeably behind or ahead of its concrete focal distance.

Amazing lens. Whenever I take it on a trip I end up using it more than any other lens. As David said, it's extremely versatile once you learn how to use it. The close focusing ability is great fun, too.

@ RonHendriks: From an aesthetic point of view these are really cool pictures! Seems like a very nice setting to obtain a grainy b/w rendition.

Oh and that 25/0.95 lens sounds absolutely badass at an amazing price point. Bet that's going to attract a bunch or two to the m4/3 system.

This is exactly what made me curious. Other lens makers produce m4/3 lenses as well, as far as I know, and issued no such announcement.

I wouldn't be too surprised if CV presented a digital RF-concept at Photokina. No release date, just a concept. If Leica can make it to the digital world, why wouldn't CV? In fact, I've always wondered about that. Either way, this could get very interesting.

Just stumbled across this announcement: OLYMPUS | News Release: COSINA CO., Ltd. Joins the Micro Four Thirds System Standard Group

I think this leaves room for lots of speculation but it appears that CV should come out with a m43 camera some time now. Now if they made an affordable rangefinder camera....

Anyone else intrigued?

I think I recently mentioned this in a different thread: MC Mir-47 Pentax K 2.5/20 Lens

At 20mm f/2.5 it may well fit your needs. Haven't found a whole lot of feedback about it, but at that price, you may want to just give it a shot. Try doing some research online. I think there are some sample shots floating around.

EDIT: Oops, I think I missed this part:

In that case, I guess the Sigma is the way to go.

Fully agree with that. Only did some informal testing under mediocre lighting conditions with the WR kit lens but autofocus speed in non-LV use is noticeably improved, no doubt about that.

K-7 display not dustproof?

Not being anal at all, sir. In fact, I consider myself far from being so. Just find my experience kind of surprising after all the praise being posted here regarding Pentax' environmental seals. It's not like I really used my camera in particularly challenging situations - but I may well do so some day and when I do, I will be happy to know I can rely on an alleged feature that was one of the main reasons for buying the product in the first place.

So any more informed opinions highly welcome here. Will post any feedback I get from Pentax when I eventually get a response (if ever).

K-7 display not dustproof?

Recently got back from a trip that involved occasionally getting my K-7 exposed to some mildly dusty conditions. Nothing too bad, mind you, just some offroad drives on dusty tracks and the occasional walk at the beach. I kept the camera in its bag when it wasn't needed which surely was by far most of the time.

Nonetheless it appears there are now dust specks under the display where I'm pretty sure there hadn't been any before the trip. They are close to the bottom edge of the display and on closer inspection seem to be located in two different layers (?) of the glass components. I currently cannot take a picture of it as the K-7 is my only camera. I have used the camera in heavy rain before and never had a problem with wetness or even condensed water.

My main concern is not the handful of dust particles below the display but rather fear that this may get worse over time and insecurity whether the screen is actually water or dustproof at all.

Has anybody had similar problems before and does anyone have suggestions on how to handle this? I somehow doubt this will be covered by warranty...

EDIT: I have no doubts that the K-7 as such is well sealed. My fear is just that on my unit the seals around the screen are defective or something.

Finally received this lens today. I have to say I'm thouroughly impressed with its built quality (no shit!) and design. I won't have time to actually go out and take photos with this for another few days but even just having it mounted on my K-7 feels and looks so beautiful. I'm feeling this one is going to come with a lot of fun. Here's hoping I can follow this up with some nice pictures :)

Btw, jsherman, once again, great photos right there!
