Hi,
This rebate may be in response to Canon's rebate. Canon has one going
in Canada and started a different, US only, rebate on May 18, thru July 19.
They have several bodies and flashes, plus many lenses included.

How to reduce high ISO noise while shooting

Thanks PxP.
Most times when shooting indoor sports you Need the
highest ISO you can find to get close to the necessary shutter speed.
The K10D's ISO 1600 isn't really enough so you make do.
ISO 800 (as per bymy's example) isn't anywhere high enough.
Hand-held, lower light, fast-moving shots require high ISO settings.

Will Pentax Follow Canon's Rebate?

It seems that Canon is coming with a large rebate program
next week on multiple bodies and many lenses/flashes, etc.
Will Pentax follow suit with a rebate program of their own?

A nice value for money macro lens for K10D

I have a Sigma 28-80 AF that goes 1:2 and was quite inexpensive.
Less than a hundred, brand new.
There are Lots of choices available to you depending on $$$ to spend.
If you want to go manual focus look for a Kiron 105 f2.8 macro.
Goes 1:1 on 35mm film bodies and is razor sharp.

Broadway Photo (scary on ResellerRatings) may have two versions
at two prices. The low one may be a non-USA body, ie: grey market.
Just a guess on my part.

purchasing a new SLR system

Hello RWA. Sounds similar to my recent thoughts. 3 months ago I bought
a K10D (first DSLR) cuz the price was right, though I wanted a 40D.
Bucks are/were tight so......I lived with it. I'm an old film shooter and
enjoy some sports pics. Found out the K10D is a bit slow at times.
Now, I'm still considering a 40D, and selling the K10D simply because I want
to take more/better sports pics. Moral of the story: Be sure you buy the body
that will do what YOU want it to do.
Ergonomics/buttons/controls of the Pentax are very good, however, with
only a few details that I'd change.
I hope you make the right choice no matter which brand.

Here's a bigger picture, longer term, question.
If Pentax doesn't get better/faster focusing to equal Canikon, can
Pentax survive another 5 years?
Third party lenses are coming with HSM, which will help.
They are already a small player in the market.
Will we see 2-3 brands left in 5 years?
I've been wondering this for awhile.

A follow-up.
I enjoy taking pics at womens basketball games, and used 1600 speed film for
years. Some grain and a yellowish cast were common. Bought a K10D because
of the price, and I wanted to try digital. I need ISO 1600 (or higher) and an f2.8
zoom lens to make that work. I'm now at the point --> do I want to spend the money
to get a high speed motor (HSM) zoom f2.8 lens for my K10D, --> OR, do I want
to switch brands.
I don't want to shell out big bucks, $800 each, on a lens or two and then realize
that the body I have won't do what I want it to do. The info above makes me
wonder if the AF is good enough/quick enough for basketball or other sports.

Indoor sports photography how to?

Re-read #6 above, It's GOOD.
Gym lighting stinks! I've shot for years with ISO 1600 color neg. film
and tried it this winter with my K10D. Expect a yellowish cast with either type.
White balance is a problem for me - I need to learn more.
1/250 will be okay, and you'll probably need ISO 1600 setting.
I've shot Lots of pics to get a handful of good ones, so don't
expect too much.

Thanks Falconeye. Good info, interesting.
The 40D body is *roughly* the same price as the K20D.
The K20D has 4 times the out of focus shots. 6.4% vs 25.6%
Hmmm...... I wanted a 40D when I bought my K10D.
I'm beginning to be more sure that I bought the wrong camera.

Pentax Photo Laboratory?

Monochrome,
I agree completely. Digital can be/is? a pain in the rear.
Not all software opens PEF files. You need to be Sure before
you buy something.
I just started to look at RawTherapee, which does work.
It has a decent manual to download, but I wish it were even better.
(I want *Manual 101 for Newbies Like Me*)
I believe you can save files as tiff (best way) or jpeg (compressed)
Hope that info helps a bit.

OK, understood.
I'm looking at buying the Di version, also for $130
It should be an OK walk-around lens until I buy
a 70-200 f2.8 later, or 50-135/150 f2.8

Heather,
I don't believe the lens that came up at B&H is the newest version/part #.
(I'm not positive on this, however.)
Check the Tamron site to make sure, but I think there is a newer version.

Zilla,
I bought one from the ebay seller you listed above.
It came quickly from Utah, and works great so far.
He was easy to work with, and a decent price.

K10D or K200D

You can buy another battery for the K10D on ebay, like I did, for a few bucks.
They last a long time before needing a recharge.
The entry-level D40 may not be as much camera as you want/expect.
I've not seen a K200D yet so I can't help there.
My 2 cents.

reply to #7 above.
Those two lenses are nearly identical size-wise.
3 inches x 4.6 (Tamron) and 3 x 4.8 (Sigma)
That difference wouldn't make you "stick out like a sore thumb".
Both go 1:2 macro.
Tamron costs $130, and the non-APO Sigma is $143, while
the APO version discussed, is about $200, I believe?
